DON'T buy email address for your blog!

So I've seen a lot of people selling email addresses to new blogger and internet marketers for shit loads of money. And I want to say to all bloggers etc.; this is a horrible idea. Here are the two top reasons why you shouldn't waste your money.
  1. Up to 50% of your emails will bounce
  2. The recipients are not from your target niche
Spend some time building your list. 100 subscribers of your own are worth more than 1000 bought.

You're welcome

You can get fresh / vertically targeted data.

Have a reputable email hygiene company clean the data. This will help reduce the the risk of know complainers, spam traps, etc...

The question is if you can get data for your niche.

Everything I do is financial related. So I have no problems getting data.

Also, I don't use it to solely drive users to a blog. I promote lead generation offers in the vertical and having an existing blog is secondary.

By no means am I saying that buying data is for everyone. But at the same time, I would never tell someone that it's not something they may want to consider...it depends on many things.

A lot of companies buys lists and are successful with them. There are large companies that sell and rent lists. I actually interviewed on one of these places many years ago. They wouldn't be in business on such a large scale, if their lists didn't convert.

If you have to run the list though an email hygiene service, you're buying from the wrong source. The bounce rates should be less the a half percent, pay for quality not quantity.

I get the quality over quantity thing, However, data you buy will never be as responsive as a highly targeted opt-in list that you build yourself. So you have to compensate for this with quantity. Also, it's not about the initial list that you buy...you want to collect all the openers / clickers and remove the non responsive users. Overtime, you will then build a smaller but quality / responsive list.

In order to do this cost effectively you need to good data at decent price. If you buy through some big fortune 500 company, you are going to overpay dearly! It is far better to get quantity at a decent price and have to clean it.

Additionally, you always want to first buy a random sample and test it. This way you can get an idea how long it is likely to take to break-even. If it appears that it will take much longer than desired, then you can use the results of the test, to try and negotiate a lower price or you pass on the data.

There are also tools that you can buy or build to help reduce cleaning costs. But unless you are going to buy data as a business model (like I do), the expense is not cost effective.

It's ok to buy a list as long as you understand how the email list was built and the company selling them is reputable... That being said, it is advisable to use both methods (i.e. build your list manually and buy a list) to maximize your list growth.
