Reference to an online content in newsletter (how does it work?)

I would like to make a newsletter and use in it an online article about a research in our industry.
I would like to know if there are any legal consequences of using online content/article in your emails.
Do you have to notify, to make any contract with the author of the conent/article or you can just simply use the harvard referencing method?
How does it work?
