This guide has a lot of great advice in it - I think that going mobile is one of the most important things and that actually going mobile is compulsory right now - a lot of emails get opened for the first time on a mobile device because people get emails all day but are only parked at a desk behind their computer for part of the day.

As a result, it's more important than ever to ensure that you minimize the amount of pictures and effects that you're using in emails because those are only going to take a long time to load and mess with the display in a variety of cell phones. With the spectrum of different phones available, you're no longer designing emails to be read on a computer screen and you have to factor in how your emails will look on different mobile devices to make sure you optimize accurately for those devices.

Testing and auditing actual designs is very critical, and if your list is big enough, you'll have plenty of opportunities to do split testing with reasonable sample sizes to determine which emails get you the best response rate. I think it's most likely that the number one determinant of your response rate is actually the list itself - make sure that it's targeted and you're giving your readers what they actually want to be reading. I think that if you provide actual value rather than just bombarding people with offers, you're more likely to get a good response and conversion rate for any marketing that you're doing.

You missed the most important best practice.

Send your subscribers what they EXPECT to receive. So many email marketers fail at this one simple thing.

  • No offense mate, but that post read like a term & conditions agreement. Which, by the way, goes against one of the main objectives of email writing: Write like you bloody speak.

    Good tips though.

Felt the same way. Too much info as well also can hinder new comers. Most people know the things above if you've been in the biz just a little.

Something I find really helpful is to only have 1 bold CTA. Reduce the amount of distractions.
