Best way to clean mailchimp list?

I'm looking to clean up my email list that we send with mailchimp. We've grown the list over the past 6 years but I have a feeling that alot of the emails aren't very active. The list is 80,000 emails but I just ran a report and only 36000 have opened at least 1 of our last 20 emails. Should I purge the 44000 that haven't been active? Segment them and throw a special offer their way? I hate to throw away over half the list but they're worthless if they don't engage with our offers.

I would transfer the 44,000 to a new email platform if you have the funds and see how many clicks you receive that way. 44,000 is a fairly large list. Since they are still subscribed, the email provider may not be allowing that content to get through so the people may not be seeing it.

  • I think it is a great idea to send them a special offer first before removing them from your lists since they are still part of your subscribers. Maybe they do not have the time to check that often or they do not find any relevant information that is useful to them. A special offer may do the trick to get their engagement back.

List cleaning is also known as email verification. So, I would like to verify your list and remove the invalid addresses for you. You should throw a special offer their way.

  • Some suggestions I have is for you to pick out those inactive emails that are possibly not in use any more (bouncing emails, etc) then go ahead and remove them without hesitation. Another thing you can try is for you to segment them and find out what made them subscribe initially.

Sometimes people can be waiting for the right email, you're not getting their attention, or they don't want to read.

I'd probably start a re-engagement program that takes your segment of no-opens and invites them to confirm their address, or engage with one of several pieces over a short period of time.

You might do this by sending say 3 emails, 3 days in a row (or some other combination like this) where you're asking if they'd:
    a) like to confirm their subscription by making a click
    b) set preferences for what they'd actually like to receive. Thereby finding out what they might be interested in and
    c) set a time limit or their subscription will 'lapse' and shove that right up front in the subject line to entice an open.

I think you'd see a portion of your no-opens list completely unsubscribe and that's great (good for your list reputation and stats), and you'd see a portion resubscribe with hopefully more information about what they're after.
