How soon should you start emailing your list?

I have a small but growing list and outside of sending a thanks for subscribing email, when can I start sending my auto-sequence? I'm cautious since I was told to wait until I have at least 2,000 subscribers - to avoid a high spam ratio which could cause my account to be shut down.

No, you shouldn't wait that long. All you will do is turn your subscribers inactive. Create a good follow up series and start sending it from the same day they sign up. Trust me on this. I've worked with hundreds of email lists with huge success.

After the follow up series you must send quality info to your subscribers --a Newsletter with your latest posts?-- and some weekly offers.

Not sure who told you wait till have 2ooo subscribers to email them, but that's the worst advice ever.

You should start emailing immediately. When they sign up, give what offered, thank them and let them know what to expect coming. Then continue to follow up with value and obviously offers so can make money as well.

I never waited. I think if you have good quality content that is relevant to them, you should not get spam complaints. If you are using an autoresponder, it should be on their server not yours, so there should be little worry of being "shut down" as long as you are sending quality emails and following proper opt in procedures

    I've heard different numbers (100, 200, 500, etc)

IMO just setup your emails from the beginning and don't wait.

Don't forget that your list is being hit regularly with mails from other marketers. If you wait till you have up to 2000 subscribers, your list members will probably have lost their original enthusiasm.
Start emailing them right away and focus on giving them good quality content.

That doesn't make sense considering one person can grow a 2,000 list in a week and another might take a year to get to 2,000.

Also, the timeline is faulty considering each person will join the list at different times. Why should the first person on the list wait a year or however long it takes to reach a 2,000 list while the 2,000th person would instantly start receiving emails?

I should add it is very important to strike while the iron is hot. You become irrelevant if they do not here you for a few days. They may even report you as SPAM if you wait too long because they will have forgotten they signed up originally. If they sign up for several lists they may have that issue anyway. It is better to take bold action than to sit around and hope. You will have better results when your list gets over 1,000 but you should never put off positive action

Just a few weeks ago I had a list of people who had been given a free product.

The first group had been given the product around April. I hadn't emailed them since then.

The second group had been given the same product in November. I hadn't emailed them since then either.

They had only received about 4 emails total from me.

    Then I started a campaign.

The group that hadn't heard from me in 6 months or so opened the emails at around an 8% rate.

The group that had heard from me the previous month opened the emails at around a 15% rate.

This makes sense. If I got something from you a few weeks ago, I remember you and am interested in what you're sending me today. If you haven't emailed me in 6 months, I'm far less interested.

Go back through your own emails - what have you opened and what haven't you opened? Look at your own patterns of behavior and apply them to how you interact with your list.

I guarantee if you have a conversation with a car dealer today and they email you tomorrow, you're more likely to open their emails than if you don't talk for six months and you get an email from them out of the blue.

    You are the car dealer.

Set up your auto sequence pronto. Don't wait.
    - Here's why - How often should you mail your list?
    - Side note, there is a high-end email marketer who only works with small hyper-targeted lists - Andre Chaperon is worth checking out.
    - Why you should be sending daily emails - Ben Settle (another master email marketer to research and learn from)

    Start now.

Think of it as practice! Your list will become people who you can help, and over time you'll figure out what help that you can offer is a fit for who you attract.

There is no need to wait that long. You can start immediately only that you don't use all email to sell. There must be some that will just deliver pure, rich and value based content without marketing.
