Email service recommendations?

Does anyone have any recommendations for email services? I'm currently using Thunderbird, and find it both rather clunky, and wonder whether half my emails end up in junk folders, which I know they did a year ago. Also, on that note, does anyone recommend using an email tracker to see whether it's been viewed/opened, and if so, what do you use, or would the embedding of a pixel (tiny image) more likely lead to emails ending in junk folders, particularly if the recipient has aggressive filters for images.

I've had a number of enquiries of late, and had so few responses to my initial replies (and I'm certain that my replies are informative and friendly), and I'm wondering whether there's anything I can change.

Personally, I use Aweber for my email autoresponder and EasyCGI for my email itself. I'm happy with both.

Aweber handles everything really well; from broadcasts to list management, everything is top notch. There are other services but Aweber is in my opinion one of the best

I've used AWeber and GetResponce in the past, and even dabbled with the free ESPs' like MailChimp, Listwire and the new kid on the block MailerLite

But all of these are now obsolete in my opinion.

MailerLite is worth looking at if you have absolutely zero money to invest.

Active Campaign, CovertKit and their competition are just as affordable, and light-years ahead with the features you need in the competitive IM and Ecommerce world of today.

    I would try out Convertkit.

They are a little more pricey but have a better interface and form integration than others. Have a look at their site, I think they have a trial period of 14 days, try them out. I switched from Aweber to them, never regretted this decision.

    Hi,

I use GetResponse and i highly recommend it! Great layout, very user-friendly showing analysis of your messages, and chat support if you ever get stuck. I'm currently using it for my follow ups but also for my web form (email pop up on my site). The web form easily integrates with Wordpress which is a nice touch.

I haven't used any of the above mail providers mentioned above however, i do know people who are also very keen on Aweber.

    Hope this helps you!

  • If you start out using Mailchimp's free option, and then later you want to move your list to one of the other vendors for a paid option, can you do that? And is it good to begin with Mailchimp's free option if you have never even done email/list marketing before?

      Hey,

As far as i am aware - that would be fine. Providing you have full access to the email addresses you want to transfer, you would simply have to input those address into the other providers system.

I haven't used Mailchimp before, but use GetResponse. They offer a 30 day free trial, and i am happy with how user friendly the whole setup is there. On top of that, there are video tutorials on how to do certain things and also live chat which i have used and been happy with its capabilities.

Would recommend it! Hope that helps!

      Kind regards,

      James

@AffiliatePrograms - are you looking to promote affiliate programs? From the MailChimp terms and conditions:

Nothing personal, but in order to maintain the highest delivery rates possible for all our customers, we cant allow businesses that offer these types of services, products, or content:

    ...
    Affiliate marketing
    ...
As the original and long-time developer of two of the most well-known self-hosted email marketing solutions (now under new ownership), I'm biased towards self-hosting and using a 3rd party provider to handle the delivery.

If you do it right, you can test them against each other to drive your delivery up and (most importantly) you retain full control of your list, removing the danger of losing it if you get shut down. After all, your list is one of your most valuable assets, and as that value increases with list size and quality, so does the risk to your business of losing it.

I have been on this forum long enough to know that the answer to this question will be Awebar and Get Response.

I just started a new campaign and I am trying out MailerLite which I learned about on this forum. It is free for the first one thousand on your list and the other prices look reasonable. The templates and other functions are fine, they remind me of Get Response although the terminology is a bit different, so it was slightly confusing to set up. I am also on the list of someone who send their emails with MailerLite and they look excellent.

So MailerLite might be a good option to try, particularly if you are on a tight budget.

Thanks, looks like it may be a good option. Also check out this from their terms, it certainly seems reasonable and fair:
      "Affiliate Marketing and Affiliate Links

Affiliate Marketing and Affiliate Links are two different things. Affiliate Marketing is prohibited in MailerLite, but Affiliate Links are fine in most cases.
      • Affiliate Marketing (Prohibited) - is a type of business where you earn commission by promoting other companys products. We dont allow this activity, because theres no direct relationship between you and your subscribers. You are not allowed to send unrelated offers to your subscribers or pretend to be another brand
      • Affiliate Links (Allowed) - is a way to recommend product or service to your subscribers in your campaigns. Advertisement for another company (Affiliate Link) can only appear under your branding and be clearly presented as a special offer from another company. Moreover, the offer has to be related to your content and meet subscriber expectations. You are not allowed to send emails with links to content that is prohibited in our Terms of Use. Campaigns with blacklisted links will be stopped automatically and we may be forced to close the account permanently."
Is it possible that the MailChimp terms have been misinterpreted and that MailChimp really does allow affiliate links, just not the deceptive kind indicated in the MailerLite terms?

      Also check this out:

PC Mag - The Best Email Marketing Software of 2017

Campaigner looks interesting, what about that one for paid?

I have to admit, when I look at some of the vendor's prices in general, they do seem really high once your list gets a significant number. Does it really have to cost that much?

As was pointed out earlier, if you plan to do affiliate marketing, do not choose MailChimp. I'd also think twice about MailerLite, if the definitions posted earlier are really what they think.

Many email services are biased against affiliates because of rampant abuse, which drags down the deliverability of the whole service and drives up the cost of complying with ISP policies.

Rather than commit the resources to monitor each affiliate account for compliance, they simply ban affiliate marketers.

As for moving between service providers, it can be done. Most of them require that imported subscribers be reconfirmed before you can mail to them. Odds are, you will lose a significant percentage of your list if you make them opt-in again.

But look at what I just quoted from MailerLite. They seem to have taken great effort to say they do allow affiliate links, as long as you are not deceptive and make it clear you are promoting the offerings of another party under your own brand rather than deceptively pretending to be the other party. How hard is that, and if they went to all that trouble to clarify, why would they be inclined to just ban indiscriminately? I'm skeptical they are that way...

And I still wonder if MailChimp really is the same and the reports about them are overblown. When I get a chance I will examine the MailChimp terms for myself to see...

Thanks for the heads up in your last paragraph though...

I was skeptical because MailerLite doesn't seem to be real clear on the definition of "affiliate marketing." They seem to confuse it with phishing and other forms of fraud, while they don't believe that including affiliate links in emails counts as "affiliate marketing".

I didn't say ML specifically would ban indiscriminately. I said that many providers take the easy way out and apply zero tolerance policies rather than commit resources to sorting out the bad actors from the merely ignorant from the legit marketers.

Good answer. Much better to get an answer straight from the horse's mouth. I'm going by anecdotal evidence that suggests MC might be one of those providers who don't want to be bothered with dealing with affiliates.

If you think you might want to go the self-hosted route, take a look at Mautic (www.mautic.org). It's an open source marketing automation program that looks to have a lot of power. Extensive manual and many YT videos to help you get the most out of it.

  • I have used Mailchimp for a little while, then GetResponse for 2 years until moving over to Aweber 3 months ago.

My experience with GetResponse was quite good for these 2 years but I kept having the feeling that Awebers customers were experiencing more open rates than GR users (I'm in the MMO niche btw).

    A little comparison:

    Customer Service:
I have to hand this one though over to GR as their live chat is open 24/7 versus only work hours and weekdays at Aweber. So if you want really fast support then GR is the choice.

    User interface
Maybe not all people find it important but I do. I can see now that for me the Aweber UI is just somehow simpler, faster and "lighter". I experienced a little "lag" between pages on GR - don't know if it's the server or what - but I do know that I get my things done faster on Aweber - probably because I can find things faster.

    Pricing
Aweber is a bit more pricier than GR but nothing that did hold me back from switching to them.

    Delivery
I immediately noticed that my test emails (which are biz opps) almost never hit my junk filter or "promotions" in Gmail compared to all the times I had to tweek my GR, removing bad no-no words so they would show up in their main inbox. Now this is of course just based on my experience and not scientific data but I could notice a clear difference when it came to this. This is important because you want your subscribers to see your email before they decide to open it right?

    Track record
Even though I could highly recommend GR it's hard for Aweber to go unoticed as they have been around since 1988 (if i remember correctly) and are renowned in this industry for being the go-to autorsponder for marketers.

Now you have actually dozens of autoresponders out there and I haven't tried them all so consider this just my 2 cents to your question.

    Hope it helps.

After having played around with Aweber, Mailchimp, & Infusionsoft for a couple of years (both personal and with clients), a colleague put me onto AutoPilotHQ.

I've never looked back since, and all of my clients are now on it. I love it.. it uses drag and drop to create a whole AR process flow, has SMS integration with Twilio, and a beautiful API that I've found very easy to work with.

One downside is they only have basic Zapier integration, which thankfully hasn't been a problem for me as I've gone direct through the API where needed.

I'm not affiliated with AutoPilotHQ in any way, but I highly recommend them!

If you want a great service with many great automatization features you can try mailerlite it allows you to use all the features up to 1000 subscribers for FREE, after 1000 the pricing beats typically any autoresponder solution.

If you need a solution with high complexity of triggers, actions, etc then Convertkit is the best option hands down! In a very different layer, when you have a huge amount of subscribers i highly suggest Infusionsoft.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I did try GMail on GSuite, but to set it up to how I wanted seemed overly complicated. I have fairly straight forward requirements I think!

In a nutshell, there are three of us, each with our own email addresses. There is also an info@ address, to which most the initial enquiries arrive to, from the various forms on our website. We also have a few aliases from past workers, that I would like to keep. Once we have an enquiry, we reply using our own email addresses, whether that's necessary or not, I don't know, but I felt it added a small personal touch to the booking process for prospective clients.

Ideally, I'm after a simple and dare I say it, as cost efficient a solution as possible, as we aren't a big business and our turnover isn't massive.

GSuite would have required me to set up another user of info@, which seemed an overkill. They offered me collaborative group emails, but the faff in setting that up seemed to far too great.

Surely there's a simple web-based client, that isn't too expensive, that I can use multiple email addresses with, that we can all log into and access each other's email accounts?
