Designed or simple text?

Whenever I've sent marketing emails I've always preferred simple copy that is intended to speak to the receiver on a personal level. As part of that I've always found it counter-productive to add design elements, as flashy graphics make it clear that you've sent the email out to thousands or even millions of people, and for me that ruins the personal connection. As a result I always try to avoid any design work at all.

Does anyone here add big design elements to personal-style emails? If so, what?

I keep the design to a minimum. I want my emails to look nice, but mostly I want them to be readable. I have gotten a few in the past with so much design stuff that they are not readable.

Also with more people looking at emails on their phones, simple is better.

    I keep it simple.
