1.5 m Business Emails | What would You do? Rent them or Sell them?

haha, I am a firm believer of selling data, but most people on here are going to tell you to run it yourself and make money that way.

You don't say how you built the list. I'm assuming that you're connected in some way online or offline with each buyer. If so, starting out by testing it in your new circumstance would be wise. That might be by selling it to someone who understands how you built the list and that it's a test and agrees to give you feedback or it might be by mailing yourself.

Just like personal growth begins with small consistent steps based on the asset of you yourself, business growth begins with small consistent steps.

I suggest you make a choice of your direction based on your interests and abilities. Then find a way to test what that might look like in a first tiny step that you can grow from.

Since you say you're new to email marketing, if you choose to mail yourself you might want to start with a very small chunk of that data, perhaps 100 a day so that you find out whether your assumptions about your list being a good list is correct or not.

Yes you've heard it a million times before, the money is in the list, so work your list and do JV's on promo's.

Thank You All for Your comments, and I would like to state that I gathered the list from paid traffic and giving away content about the niche the list is about, which is owning a business.
I want to sell it now, because I am looking for a quick buck at the moment, to be honest, so any directions that way would be awesome.
But if JVs, and self promotion is a profitable way, I'd pursue that road, and any advice would be super appreciated.

You might try contacting a list broker, he will be able to tell you what it's worth, find buyers for the list, or purchase the list from you directly.

The value of your list will be determined in part by the specific method used to curate the list.

In most cases a list is worth a lot more to the business that curated the list than to a disassociated/unrelated 3rd party, so bare that in mind when you attempt to sell it.

This is a tough one to crack.... how did you 'acquire' this list? was it scraped or was it opted into?

brother !! would'nt be better if you use it yourself ? i think you can make more moneythan if you sell it ; and i think all r agree with me

Cause it seems that u didnt acquire it with an opt in page, but in other ways so it's not CAN-SPAM compliant and you wont have an autoresponder accepting your leads.

Bottom line, You have to take care of 4 things


1. Don't use Fake names. You must use your real name or real Company name

2. Don't use Deceptive Subject line. The subject line must be in connection with email body

3. You must include your real physical address inside your message

4. Provide Opt Out links and honor opt out requests


There is no mention of Optin, Double Optin or Confirmed Optin in on the FTC website.


Now lets come to email list import part.

Law does not prohibit you to import your lists to a 3rd party service provider.

Actually, All major bulk email services (mailchimp, aweber, icontact) allow you to import lists. We are different in a sense that we do not require re-optin

If you took the time to build an opt-in list it os potentially very valuable and may serve you best by using it to build a business for yourself by offering your own products or charging others for access. Send a survey to the list asking the recipients what type of content they are most interested in to get a feel for the subscribers. Segment the list and send relevant content and informative content. Ofcourse you could sell the data if you don't have the stomach for the email marketing grind. Good luck.

A couple of obvious questions that come to mind,
that other saavy email marketers on this post have already stated:

- What kind of offers attracted the optin?
- How old is the list?
- Is it still growing and how fast?

These are the basic characteristics of a list that I choose to know.

If I were in your shoes, given that I'm not just trying to sell this traffic ;-)
I would monetize it by establishing a good "business" relationship
with them, letting them know that I will be a professional resource
that will offer them valuable information.

I'd expect to lose some, but whoever I keep, watch out!

You can test parts of the list. One part would be just email them as it is. Another part I would do a new opt in and clean it, so that you end up with legitimate buyers. Then test your results. Good Luck.
