How to verify / bounce check a large list?

We have 3 large lists from an old website which we bought and we will re-activate. First of all, these are opt-in mails!
When sending to the first list (which is the smallest and only around 8k) we got a 20%+ bounce rate, which caused problems with the email service of course.

Any ideas how to avoid this in the future? The list was even verified before with bulkemailchecker.com. Still so many bounces. I understand that a 'normal' email provider is concerned about their reputation and that's the reason they have a problem with high bounce rates but there must be a way to test this in a safe environment?

Please note, these were opt-in mails and they are still used in the same context! Unsubscribe / Spam report rate of the same sendout was 2%.

    Wow, 20%?

If a customer gets over a 1.5% bounce rate on my system I would be surprised. Most Email validation systems deliver with 5% or less.

    How big are your lists?

Are you getting 2% complaint rate on all mailings?

    My recommendation: Double opt-in!

First, send a confirmation email for subscription and let allow the users to receive the email newsletter and collect the opt-in email list. Now, send email blast only to opt-in address so all your upcoming campaign will have zero bounce.
