How Well Do Cold Emails Convert?

Hello everybody, I recently developed a wp plugin that will target a specific audience (i know who are the people who could be interested in this product and how to find their emails). I am thinking about sending cold emails to sell this plugin and i am wondering what will be the conversion rate (how many emails do i have to send to get a response/sale). I am looking for people who are actually acquiring customers by sending cold emails and would like to know how is it working for them. What should i expect in terms of open rates and conversions? From a little research i have done i am looking at a 20% open rate with a 0.5% conversion rate/response rate or even less than that, but since i have no previous experience in this would like to get feedback from people that are actually doing it. There are many variables i know, but i am looking for a general answer.

Thanks

Why cold emails? Is it simply because it's so niche you dont think they are targetable on any advertising platform?

Your research is way off. You'll get a less than .5% open rate from a cold email usually.

That is not based on research it is based on actual results from companies I have worked with.

Hey Jamie, i have red that cold email marketing, if done properly, is extremely effective especially for B2B. I want to give it a try and see how it works for me.

Thanks for your feedback Helisell. A 0.5% open rate seems to be really low, far from what i was expecting. I was counting at a 0.5% as conversion or even a response rate, not an open rate... That means if i send 6000 emails only 300 people would open it! It seems to be a low number. Were those emails sent to a targeted audience?

I actually did my numbers based on a couple of articles about cold email marketing i found on some authority websites such as this article:

"Of the 1,000 cold emails we sent, 293 bounced. Of the remaining 707, 45.5% opened the emails-a terrific open rate for such a busy group, as the average open rates for business emails hovers between 14% and 23%, according to data from ConstantContact and MailChimp.

But here's the clincher. Of the entire group who received our emails, only 1.7% replied. 12 people out of 700. That's less than half of the click rate on the average sales email."

    or this one:

"I've emailed over 400 prospects with different approaches, using well-tested templates and even custom tailored uber-personalized emails. Not a single cold prospect has converted. The other week I spoke to a guy who runs a similar business model. His main acquisition channel is cold email and is working well for him. When I told him I sent 400 emails and didn't convert a single user, he was like: "Buddy, we had to send 4000 emails to convert 20 customers." That is 0.5% conversion rate. He also mentioned that's the industry standard. "

I am actually looking at cold emails to start a conversation with potential customers not as a way to get sales. I want them to get interested in my product and start a conversation on the phone with them where i plan to close the deal.

If you are only getting 0.5% opens then something is wrong!

    Poor data
    Poor subject line / offer
    Deliverability issue

I have been sending cold email (B2C) for over 16 years. If all you are doing is scraping data, then your open rate will suck. I personally use 3rd party data, but that's not to say it won't suck. You have to test the data at the source level and drop the poor and keep the good. The way that truly works best is to develop your own exclusive sources that you can partner with.

I know someone that does B2B and he has VA's that semi-manually scrape targeted data and then refine it and send a highly targeted message. He is dissatisfied with anything under 50% open rate and a minimum of a 5% click through rate.

      Hi DIABL0,

I also sent an email asking if you know someone who is an expert in cold B2B email marketing.

If so, I would love the referral.

      Thanks!
