Any disadvantages for using MailChimp?

6 replies
I understand many IM coaches are recommending Aweber or GetResponse for email service provider.

Are there any disadvantages if I use MailChimp? I understand that MailChimp offers free plan for beginners who has less than 2000 subscribers.

I welcome your feedback.

    hey! here are some of cons of MailChimp to think about before you get started:
    1) Very basic ready-made templates for subscription forms, however forms can be either hosted or integrated into the website;
    2) Although you can import as many contacts as you like, if you get a lot of unsubscriptions or spam complaints after sending a campaign your account can be suspended and/or cancelled;
    3) Autoresponders will only be sent to those who subscribed via the web form;
    4) Less reliable with Paypal or Wordpress integration (if you are planning to have a membership-based website);
    5) Can send to one list or segment at a time, which can be created dynamically by searching on certain parameters

    The one thing that keeps many here from using MailChimp is the service is not friendly to affiliate marketers. That's a big deal if you work online.

    If you plan to build a valuable list - it's so much easier later on if you start with a reliable autoresponder that will work for your business from the beginning.

    I'd say just start. You should export your list from time to time so you have a copy of it in a cloud storage folder.

    As Kay said MailChimp is not good (it's in their policy) if you're doing affiliate marketing.

  • As the other replies have mentioned the one HUGE stumbling block with MailChimp is the lack of ability to send affiliate links.

    If you are looking for a free service, I stumbled across EmailOctopus the other day and I stress that I have not used it, but from the little bit of research I did, it looked as if it COULD be a sensible low cost alternative to the big two.

    I don't want to potentially break any rules by linking to it here, but if you just google Emialoctopus it is the first result.

  • Looks like MailChimp is only suitable for people running a small blog or a non business site.

    If your business is affiliate marketing then no.
    If you're notifying customers about your products why not?
