Is your email mobile-friendly?

Let's face it - people are increasingly reading emails on phones instead of viewing on their laptops. And for good reason: it's handy and faster firing up my phone's email client on my iPhone rather than having to wake my laptop from standby and fire up my web browser.

Problem is, not all e-newsletters sent are mobile-optimized, i.e. images take hours to load, fonts are too small to read, the body doesn't scale according to my phone's resolution. And while phones can render these emails just fine, I'm not particularly fond of having to resort to pinch-to-zoom out. I mean why do that when I can simply receive an email that automatically scales and fit according to screen size.

What about you? How would you make sure that your emails are mobile-friendly?

Keep your email under 600 pixels wide While most modern mobile devices can handle responsive designs, there are exceptions. When your email width is 600 pixels or less, users won't have problems viewing emails that were formatted for large computer screens.

I don't take thing the technicall way as our friend below me, but I am sending example emails to my testing e-mail account and look at them on different smartphones to ensure that they are easy to read

I personally take care of some things for mobile friendly email marketing:
    Adjust email width under 600pixels,
    Decrease image size,
Adjust white spaces, layouts according to the theme,

Its today's need to have mobile-friendly emails/newsletters. A huge number of users are on mobile phones now so you can't afford not to have a mobile-friendly email/newsletter

I keep it simple and cover all my bases rather it be mobile or desktop emails.

    Mobile: 320 pixels wide.
Note: Eliminates the pinch-to-zoom out requirement.

    Desktop/Tablets etc: 600 pixels wide.
Note: Requires the pinch-to-zoom out exercise only on mobile devices wherein the webmaster did not optimize the email for mobile. However, most of the newer mobile devices will auto-adjust just fine.

Today, over 53% of people use a mobile device to open emails mainly because those same people are away from their home device, desktop/tablet, etc.

Years ago the 600 pix width was a must-use standard and had no alternatives. Again, most of the newer mobile devices will auto-adjust just fine.

Images and newsletters in emails are a different animal. I use 480 x 480 pixels or smaller. Only the oldest mobile devices will not auto-adjust for the width.

Aweber has a feature that allows you to preview the email on a mobile.

And you can always subscribe yourself and read them on a mobile to see how they look.
