Why email marketing is NOT dead - 53.71% open rate

I'm constantly reading that email marketing is now not worth it, it is dead as well as controversial theories.

Legend: B2B (Business-to-Business), B2C (Business-to-Consumer), ROI (Return on Investment)

Email communication is still essential as of 2020 and it will be at least until 2040 !

As we all know everyone working in an office has an Email. That is why B2B emails have solid ground. There is no alternative so far, at least nothing professional as Email is.

B2C emails are the ones where most concern is. But as a marketer you can focus on B2B or B2C emails depending on your niche.

Consumers/Customers won't have alternative to email as well.

Why do I think like this? Well, all email pessimist are based on the fact that email exists since 1971 and because technology evolves really fast it is logical that it will be replaced by something else.
But hey... Ever received a Viber message for a product? I did !
Is that an alternative ? - Yes.
Is it good alternative ? - No! Just no way!

Sometimes I purchase protein powder online from a famous store we have in here. I have put my telephone number for discussing the delivery time and if address is accurate etc. They use that number to message me on Viber for promotions as well as at least 50K people. This alternative to email ended bad. Same would happen with Skype and other tools intended for CHAT since their beginning.
Chat is a really good replacement for SMS,but it shouldn't be for Email, simply because Email has sophisticated SPAM filters that CHAT tools don't.
As a marketer you may dislike these SPAM filters but they are the reason Email communication won't die anytime soon.
When I was flooded with those Viber marketing messages I was constantly thinking that I got a message from a friend. When I found out it is yet another marketing message I got irritated pretty fast. So Viber couldn't deal with that! They did an option to block these messages 2-3 years ago, which really shows the weakness of how to deal with the situation.
That is why I deleted my Viber but never deleted my Email
------------------
Another proof - mixed list of B2B and B2C emails got 53.71% open rate

Behind this successful email campaign sits the fact that it was carefully created in 4 hours time!
Those points are covered:
• Email list that has old, inactive customers and targeted B2B emails.
• Subject title that offers what those people always needed, no blacklisted words!
• Good reputation sending server
• Engaging body content

Why you don't have such successful campaigns ? Well you probably haven't done these points exactly as they should. But this is your problem not that Email marketing is dying.
Email marketing is actually constantly evolving and a beautiful example is the Drip Email marketing. My personal opinion is that this is TOP ROI path and success for every business that can efficiently use it.

I have purchased an email list, I have scraped myself an email list, I have inherited an email list

This totally destroys all the mentioned above as tips for successful marketing and great open rate that may lead to sales. Those people are complaining that email marketing is dead as well.

There's a single exception in that situation - you have the targeting! No matter how you've got that list, if you have clear idea why those emails are collected into a single list and you are in the same niche maybe you can sort it out!

Unfortunately purchased lists are often (lets say 95%) lying about the targeting, scraped lists are often bombarded with SPAM (because if you had the chance to scrape it,many others also did) and your message cannot be seen, and inherited lists are often full mess as you don't know what you're inheriting.
Again - if you're in that situation there's no reason to blame the Email marketing efficiency.

Final thoughts

Why did I wrote all this?
1st - To stop (if I can call it) propaganda about that email marketing is dead, which probably annoys me as well as other perfectionist people that love to live in a world with more truths.
2nd - I couldn't find very clear, concessive and proving stuff, just general thoughts.
3rd - Your reply may be something that I can learn from as well.

Email marketing should be a way to maintain customers attention and re-sell to them, but not grabbing a list from somewhere with no targeting and good approach and make business.
Email marketing is usually enhancement of what you got.

Thank you!

Lots of good points there, thanks.

Yes, I see lots of evidence that some people are getting great results with email marketing currently. I see posts from a webinar JV manager I know, of things like a brand new webinar generating a million dollars in 70 days, promoted by email lists. So money is definitely being made by email marketing right now.

Any advice on finding partners who want to grow their IM list for free?

Email is still one of my most effective communication channels. But, it can be augmented tremendously by integrating social media, blogs, and offline platforms such as telephone, postal mail, print advertising, etc.

I have found that competition for attention now requires massive content production and distribution to targeted demographics through relevant outlets and publications.

Content (online/offline articles, video, blog posts, webinars, podcasts, etc) is the primary driver of qualified traffic into my marketing machinery.

I guess the reason why more and more people are saying that its dead is because they are doing it in the wrong way.

They buy a shiny object online promising them to make $100 days , then they are told to create an email list and buy some solo ads to a shitty product and complain that it doesn't work.
Lots of newbies get fooled this way and then they say it doesn't work anymore..

      That's exactly right!

If email marketing were dead, then why does EVERY SINGLE fortune 500 retailer use email marketing?

Since when spamming become right way?

Since times when NANAE, declared email spamming Internet's nuisance and
raged a war on spam, email marketing and specifically unsolicited junk become
dead because you must be stupid to get listed in Spamhaus, Spamcop, Sorbs,
and other BL to end spamming campaign for good.

I think email marketing is playing a very important role, because if I talk about myself, the first thing I check in the morning is my mails. And if I see something that I am looking for then I am trying to spend some time to search any discount on it. So aits good way to increase the reach.

A few years ago I was building a list in some not very competitive niche, the lead magnet was super quality, email follow-ups were also solid, so my open rate was as high as 80% at some point, the click-thru rate about 50%, so I am sure that to reach such numbers are also possible nowadays too.

Just imagine if you have 10 000 email list, 8000 opens up your email and 5000 clicks your link.
    The sky is the limit.

Nice story of yours. If you got 50% click-thru it really confirms the effectiveness of email marketing (not to be confused with spam marketing that many people hope for).

With all the noise from social media platforms we use, emails still remain the place where you can reach someone 1 on 1.

But the email marketing strategies have to be up-to-date as well. Spamming people with your offers doesn't work anymore.

Email marketing is personal and efficient. It costs nothing to send. It delivers a good experience as well when done properly. Most don't as they just sell. How many of us sit there look at our inbox and know which emails we will get value from reading? I reckon we all do.
The answer is to entertain the reader, give them value, tell them a story they can relate to and entwine it to a promotion. Oh and promote your products/services in every email. Why would you leave the chance of a sale out if you don't? Seems crazy to me.

Nice explanation about email marketing. It still happens a lot. Even though you do not recognize that email marketing happens daily with promotion mails and by giving discounts for specific customers. There is a email address for each and everyone in the world and it is a quick and easy way to conduct marketing as all are alert about their individual mails.

In my opinion emails are getting back on the radar. Cost of online customer acquisition is rising, ads are more and more expensive. When you want to increase ROI with every channel email is essential.

Other thing is that email is very natural. Everybody use emails, not everybody have social media account for example

It's multi channel marketing now. There are products that let you sent same campaigns tailored for eMail, SMS and social media. Email has powerful Spam filters and the ability to mark email as spam also influences whether your correctly worded email lands up in Spam or not. But that doesn't mean it's dying. It's just getting more integrated with other channels like SMS and social.

If I remember exactly, people are able to read sms from fb messenger (type of integration). It would be interesting if emails can be read from messenger as well.

Cool post - thanks. In a world of ever-changing algorithms wherein a few oligarchy-esque platforms control most all online transactions, email - and the direct customer communication it affords - remains (and will remain) among the most critical channels for long-term business success.

I don't think e-mail is going away in a LONG time. Every single website out there requires an e-mail address. The secret to great results with e-mail marketing is segmentation and split testing until you get better and better results.

I really like the facts, which has been mentioned over. All are very true about Email Marketing. As there is a rumor passes on Email Marketing is Dead and long gone. Which is not a bit true.

If you are doing email marketing in a proper way like it intends to, then believe me there is no other such marketing channel out there that can beat the efficiency of the platform. Also if consider the fact of ROI, It is the most driven ROI to its counterpart.

There are people in the market who are using Email Marketing to do spamming and use it to send unsolicited emails to the users to whom they don't have permission to send a promotional email. And when they get blacklisted or did not get a good open rate started complaining that Email Marketing is gone Dead.

Sticking to the latest trend in Email Marketing and following all the parameters needed to follow as a professional Marketer Structure your email database, Arrange then in a defined segmented group, implementing CAN-SPAM law, Configuring SPF & DKIM before hitting the send button. These are a few tactics to use for a better result in Email Marketing.

    Thank You !!
