Email List Question For All You List building Guru's

Hello,
Hey guys Ive got a question for you. Im pretty savvy at most of this, but I do have an honest question.

For those of you building lists or have lists. Do you keep a different list for different niches or just 1 big list?

So for example you have a niche for "Dog Training" - do you keep that in one list.

And lets say your 2nd niche is "Cell Phones" - do you keep that in a second list..

ect..ect..

or just 1 big list fed to multiple niches?

Was just curious.. my gut is telling me target each niche to each list.. but I was just curious.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, thats what my gut was telling me, that way your targeted on your send outs, but again was just curious how people managed their lists. If it was just one BIG HUGE Bulk or smaller targeted ones. I think Ill go with the smaller targeted ones, makes more sense and probably will convert better, being targeted. THX

    Separate them.

Depending on your A/R, you can even collect differing information on your forms, and re-serve that information back in your emails, providing a more personalized appeal.

    Name: Joe
    Email: joe@joe.com
    Zip Code: 30030

    Hey Joe,
Thought you'd like to know what I'm seeing others around Atlanta do with
    their internet marketing...

Separate lists for separate niches for sure. Selling dog training to a person who wants vacation info is not a good idea. You would almost certainly lose subscribers because you are providing things that they don't need.

As my marketing 1000 professor said, "Always segment the market".

Ok thanks... thats what we will do. Makes total sense, and actually the net is starting to get pretty localized So Maxreferrals thats an interesting concept of asking for a zipcode, but what would be the benefit of it? Just curious ... im guessing maybe to target to a specific zip code or area maybe for a groupon type site? or offer? I cant really see any other benefit of having a zip asked for but maybe im wrong? Let me know your thoughts behind asking for a zip . Maybe Geo targeting for an ad offer? And if so... how would you filter that through a list or A/R ? Maybe im missing something here?
    Again Thanks in advance.

Yes you definitely need to separate them and have each list targeted towards the exact reason they decided to subscribe in the first place. You can even create different lists within a larger niche. For example you could have your "dog training" list, but also another list pertaining to only "beagle training". I find that I get really good results when my list is very tightly focused and targeted.

  • Absolutely: one list per niche, and sub-lists within each niche: subscribers, customers, affiliates, etc.

Proper list segmentation is crucial for any online business.

Definitely have separate lists for each niche - no question.

Also, even for the same niche, I recommend that you have
multiple sub-lists with subscribers segmented by subjects
of interest, behavior and their relationship to you (prospect,
      customer, repeat customer, etc).

Proper list segmentation will help you to increase your chances
of sending the right message, to the right person at the right
      time.

Once you segment your lists properly, you'll get more people
actually reading your messages and acting on them as well as
      minimizing unnecessary unsubscribes.

Too many Internet Marketers make the mistake of having just
one list and treating them all the same. BIG mistake.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

Ok so my next question. Do you guys find your list more effective by using AR responses posted on certain amounts of days., or do you only email your list when you have a viable offer?

I usually only broadcast when I have a viable offer to promote. I usually do not have a AR series setup. Everyone does it differant I am sure though.

You should be keeping in contact with your list. An autoresponder series allows you to do this and give the same message to every subscriber in order you want them to read the information.

You also should be broadcasting a message to your subscribers as well but less frequently when you have an autoresponder series. I use broadcasts when I have information I want to share with my subscribers and it just can't wait.

An AR is nice for sales funnels. However in building a list i like to use only the broadcast and broadcast to my list once or twice a week. Make sure you give them value first, such as free info on what they want. I only like to promote an offer/product to my list about twice a month. Hope this helps and good luck!

Try and think of this as people you come into contact more often..

In any place, school/work/life, we feel more comfortable with people we see on a regular basis. Your classmate you sit next to for 3 classes, the coworkers in your cube that you spend 9 hours a day with.. we're generally more comfortable with them than the ones we see everyday just passing in the halls.

This is the same with contacting your list. I try to email my list every other day, 3 days if I get lazy. I want to stay fresh in my subscribers minds and build a relationship so they that can get to know me. This works much better than if I had emailed them once a week or just once a month.

It does depend though on the type of relationship you or your company is trying to build with your subscribers - if you're selling as yourself you might want to email more often (you want people to build a relationship with you) vice if you're emailing on a company's behalf you might want to do it much less (people don't need constant communication from a company you just want to remind them that you're there).

BIG MISTAKE if you only email your list when you have something to sell.

Email your list when you have a new blog post, when you discover a valuable
new FREE resource or strategy, when you encounter a valuable relevant post
or article by another author. 1/3 to 1/2 of your broadcasts (unscheduled messages)
      can be commercial.

Above all, ADD VALUE for your list members.

One autoresponder, separate lists... is the way you want to go. I think you might be thinking that you need separate autoresponder accounts for different lists but that is not the case.

One autoresponder account allows you to create unlimited number of lists with most services. You can have separate lists for the same niche by people who sign up for a freebie on one list and the people who buy from you on another list within that niche.

Keep each niche on a separate list...

    @brandon - Thank you..

Ive studied russell brunson and all the other "guru" guys so I agree, but was just curious. I really appreciate your input. Ive already got a decent list .. around 15,000 members but never really thought to target different niches.. or categories. Makes more sense now. So.. I appreciate your input. Have you found its easier to just give stuff away and brand it on the inside .pdf or upsell/downsell? to your email list?

I've had good results with video leading to a PDF download which leads to a video advertorial... I've also had good results with a radio style show answering questions in my niche followed by a free offer which leads to the same occurrence as I laid out above.

Separate your lists as much as possible. It is best to even split up a niche in to smaller categories.

The idea is to be able to send out emails that are as targeted as possible to your particular subscribers Don't create an AR series unless you have something of value to offer in every one of those emails.

Thinking of it from an even broader perspective, you may even
consider separate autoresponder accounts for each broad niche
    - because if you intend selling the business at a later date,
your list will be a major asset of that business, and being
able to transfer an entire account is easier than transferring
a list from within one account.

Ditto for your payment processing solution.

If you intend to run your own niche businesses yourself for a long time,
then having separate sub-lists hosted on the same AR account
may save costs. One problem I've faced lately with this way
is that services like Aweber insist on appending contact info
from a generic placeholder into each email, and having the
same info across niches can be a problem at times.

But yes, at any level, having separate lists for different
niches makes more sense than clubbing them all together into
    the same one.

    All success

    Ok, here's my view:

    1. Use a few broad opt-in categories to give your subscribers control over the content they receive (1 single opt-in checkbox is way too restrictive)

    2. Use custom profile data to target your audience for each campaign, and also for personalization of each message (ie variable content)

    3. Use software that automatically does all the segmentation for you, in real time (using profile data, campaign behaviour, geo-location etc)

    4. Use the same set of segmentations for outbound marketing and inbound auto-responders, to maintain consistency in the eyes of the subscriber.

    5. Extend this consistency across into your other contact channels too, eg web landing page personalization, SMS campaigns, IVR voice automation etc. That way you can really build customer experience and loyalty.

For a short guide on the way we do our list segmentation, send me a note @jkbowser or @HTKHorizon - or take a look at bit.ly/AkmW6u

    Hope you found this useful.

PS: Sorry, I'm a newbie on this forum so not allowed to post links here yet!

Having separate lists for different niches would be easy to manage. You should know about the targeted audiences and separate your lists accordingly.
