Which is the best autoresponder/list host? (Official never-ending debate thread)

We get waaaay too many threads started here on the question: "Which is the best autoresponder/list host?" Having those littered all over the forum, with some thoughts expressed in one thread and not another, is pointless. Not to mention irritating to those who've seen the same things argued endlessly for the past 10+ years.

Post your thoughts and opinions here, and please point folks to this thread in the future when the question comes up.

And please do not muddy up the discussion with hostility. These discussions tend, for some reason, to get nasty. I will delete posts without a moment's hesitation if that happens in this thread. What's "best" for one person may not be best for someone else. Please keep that in mind.

Great idea Paul and it has been very frustrating even in my relatively short time being a member of this forum to see this kind of thread popping up over and over again.

I myself have used Get Response and Aweber a lot and have found they're both very reliable and easy to use, especially for those starting out in IM. I would say that overall I slightly prefer Get Response as I just find it slightly more user friendly and deliver rates were a tad better. However, there is very little in it they both do what they say on the tin IMO.

Personally, I've used quite a few autoresponders and my favorite so far is GetResponse. Not only is their interface easy to use, but their deliverability is great and they're easy to work with.

On top of that, they have a system in place to allow you to import leads provided they're approved and not spammy vs. others that just let in every lead (will hurt everyone in the long run) or don't let you import at all (big limitations with that).

But there's definitely other good ones out there like Aweber, iContact, and Constant Contact.

GetResponse.com is the only autoresponder I recommend for two good reasons:

    1) Jim Ducharme (GetResponse) visits the forum on a frequent basis and will help anyone and everyone if at all possible with GetResponse.

    2) Simple to use and high delivery rate.

Thats all I want from an autoresponder service. Top notch support and high delivery rates.

I didn't mention Jim's awesome customer service support in my above post and am glad Jeffery did. This is indeed a perk of using Get Response over Aweber as i've stated before.

I must say though that in all the time i've used Get Response i've never needed to ask Jim for any assistance which I think is as good a sign as any.

I've tried them all and keep returning to Aweber. But, for a new blog I'm currently trying out GWA Auto responder PLUS the Yoast Postmark Email Plugin for Wordpress.

To quote Postmark: "This plugin replaces WordPress' internal email sending functionality by routing all email through Postmark, greatly enhancing email reliability. If you rely on your WordPress install to send you email, this plugin along with the awesome service from Postmark makes sure that it actually does reach its destination.Emails sent through Postmark will, if you've set up your email addresses in Postmark correctly, show up as signed in people's inboxes."

So far, this experiment is going well and I'm happy with the combination of the two plugins.

I use the pro version of GWA to manage the mailing list I send writing opportunities too. It does everything I need basically, and I am pleased with it so far. It can be a little complicated to set things up with regards to customer opt-in forms etc, but worth the effort. So a +1 from me on this option.

            This looks interesting.

Can emails be scheduled according to each person's sign up date, ie. if I set the schedule for 3 emails to be sent 7 days apart from sign up, that means everyone will get the first email 7 days later, next one 14 days later etc regardless of when they signed up.

            Hope I'm clear.

I have no plans for the foreseeable future to use anything other than Aweber or GetResponse.

Self-hosted solutions aren't suitable for me because I'm technophobic and incompetent with this kind of stuff.

I always advise people not to use a free autoresponder for all the reasons explained in this post.

And I will echo Alexa - Do not use a free autoresponder. They are all ad driven and you are essentially sending other peoples ads to your subscribers.

Mailchimp free option is good for newbie e-marketers to test the functionality and how email marketing works without losing the penny.

For professional and serious business. I'd suggest aweber and getresponse.

I'm going to chime in with a "do as I say, not as I do" entry.

I bought a program called ListMail Pro when it first came out. It's grown over the years, and I've spent time and effort customizing some parts of it. I have enough invested in it to make switching somewhat painful.

On the plus side, I've found the software stable and reliable, and it has an active support forum.

If you are willing to put in the time to tweak it to your needs, it's a possibility.

If not, or you don't have the tech resources to work with it, stick to one of the mainstream services.

For those who don't know, listwire.com is a free service owned my an Internet marketer who's also been in the email delivery service for a very long time now.

If you're just testing the waters or on a very tight budget , it may be an attractive option.

This has always been a bee in my bonnet. The issue arises time and time and time again. I welcome your initiative Paul to try and contain everything on this topic into a single easy to find area.

The problem that I see is that only a fraction of Warriors will find and read this useful thread, many won't realize that it exists. They can not therefore, refer to it.

How many Warriors read the basic forum use and posting rules?

New users or relatively new users of the forum looking for advice on ARs (auto responders) or web hosting will be ignorant of this thread's existence and probably won't even think about using the WF search feature (which IMHO is not that effective anyway) even if they bother to look for it.

Many other Members will, I'm sure, be lazy; It's easier to make a post and get a direct answer as opposed to using a forum search engine and having to 'plough' ones way through a multitude of 'dis-jointed' posts in the search results.

I'm not trying to be negative here, even though I probably sound as though I am. It's simply that until we get a forum script with some intelligent thought technology behind it and especially its search facility, forums will always get the same questions posted time and time again. After all, they are forums and in all market places and places of discussion the same dialogue will be repeated again and again, especially over longer periods of time.

Let's face it, if you want to find something quickly and you're using (say) Google, then you type in your keywords or search phrase because, as Google is a search engine (not human) you know that you'll get some sort of quick output that you expect to see in its results and in the format or structure that you are conditioned to see those results in. If however, you're on a forum, even if you're in a hurry and want a quick answer, you type in or ask a question 'in human format' because, its a place where people meet for discussion and you know or expect that you'll get reply(s) in the form of human dialogue, that is fresh and 'up to the minute'; not old posts found by the forum search engine.

The point I'm trying to make in this long winded post is that I suspect that many find it easier to start a thread and post to a forum in order to get an answer, rather than to search on a forum in order to find an answer. So people will be more likely to go for the posting option, especially when it might be perceived that the latest posted content is the best and most valuable - even though seasoned Warriors know that is not necessarily the case.

Just my thoughts and I hope that your initiative works Paul,

    Jeff.

I agree Jeff but you can have the best super duper search function and many still won't bother.

      Hi Jeff,
I'm a new around here and the first thing I did was locate the search feature and it lead me here. Definitely appreciate all the information. I'm sure everyone can remember when they first started in IM and how frantic you may have been to make the right moves with the right people and software.

I choose AWEBER because of a few things:

1--- A dedicated service with good uptime
    2--- Good delivery rates
3--- Cheap monthly fees for unlimited lists
    4--- Ease of set up

One of the most important things for a list autoresponder is its delivery rate, so that's one of the reasons why I'll go for aweber instead of a self-hosted solution.

    Jeff,

The solution to that is simple: When someone posts a thread on the topic, reply with a link to this thread and report the new one. We'll close it, so the info all gets funneled here, and people can get the answers all in one place.

That's what we've been doing with this thread, and it's worked quite well.

I've used GetResponse and Aweber, but am now using AutoResponsePlus3 (the precursor to arpReach) which is a self hosted email solution. It's not easy nor is it cheap because you'll need to run your own dedicated server, but deliver ability can much better if you run your own server.

Self hosted is the only way to go!

I have tried around 5 different auto responders and I have to say the best by far for me has been Aweber. It is the easiest and quickest to get set up and the monthly cost to use it is incredibly cheap. There may be some free ones out there but I would avoid these as the service and support is usually bad.
    So my recommendation is Aweber

Just type in Aweber or best auto responder into Google and it will show up.Download the step by step tutorial and your away. This system is for the beginner and the expert with a huge amount of options for you to look into and utilize.

I started out with Aweber but am likely going to change over to Getresponse.
Mainly due to fact that it appears Aweber are becoming more corporate and distancing themselves from the IM crowd (plus they sent me a condescending email about spam reports), as opposed to GR who are embracing us IM'ers.

3 main reasons why I use GetResponse:

    1) Ability to import contacts (leads) from other autoresponder services (including AWeber)
    2) Single opt-ins
    3) Android app, to see the stats of my autoresponder on the go of I want to.

Not that some of these features are all that essential, but the truth is, that all these, AWeber doesn't have. Make your choice.

I'll disagree just a little bit here. I've had nothing but good experiences with MailChimp. I've used both the paid and free options and I've been very very happy with both. Their support is great and they have a really easy to use interface.

I've even talked to their support about using their service for IM purposes and I never ran into trouble. But, I suppose I can't argue that others Warriors might have complaints, I've just never seen them personally.

Great idea putting these all in one thread!
My personal opinion I LOVE iContact. I have used both iContact and Awebber and preffer iContact for several reasons.

Excellent for newbies if you don't want to pay for one or are slow to build a list. Free account no credit card required for up to 500 subscribers. I started with this and found it exellent.

Cheaper price per subscriber I now have almost 5000 people on my list and pay a very competitive rate of $19.95 per month! Same price as awebber for 1000 subscribers

Only downfall is you are limited to how many messages you send per month but I have never gone over my limit.

    Excellent live chat customer service.

I started 3 years ago with Aweber and haven't had any problems with them as a provider. I do find it annoying that i can't block by Name (since i have an issue with a spammer signing-up to my lists using a keyword for a name).

I've also been using GetResponse this year and so far haven't had a problem with them either.

both have different interfaces, obviously, and both work just fine. I don't really notice any difference between the two, for my needs at least.

I tried using GetSubscribers once too, but the leads i got through there are less than receptive (and yes it could possibly be my email sequence that sucks!).

I used to use an autoresponder service that I won't name because it's not
important to the discussion as it's a relative light weight in the industry.

I got literally ZERO response with it. It was HORRIBLE.

I have since switched to Aweber and have never looked back. I have NEVER had
ONE problem with Aweber. My response rate is excellent. In fact, without Aweber
I would have never built the business I did.

Could GetResponse have done the same? Don't know. Never used it.

But I DO know that Aweber has performed like a champ for me.

I would recommend it to anyone and stake my reputation on it.

My 2 cents for whatever that's worth to anybody.

As far as I can tell Aweber is the only one that you can actually schedule what time of day your message is sent. Does anyone know of others that allow that scheduling? Because I understand conversion is better at certain times of day.

For newbie user, I recommend GetRespond, they works well for someone who just want to test the water and see whether their method is effective or not. They offer up to 100 free email list and you can send them up to 10 times sales copy a months (approximately). The interface is very friendly, the customer support is always available, and the feature is equal to aweber.

I think you mean Getresponse.com. Yes, they offer a free 30 day trial with some limitations, so it's a great way to test their system. To bring some balance to your post:

Aweber offers a $1 trial account for 30 days, it's also a great way to test out their system (they really should make it free like most of the big players do).

Listwire.com offers a free autoresponder system for those on a very tight budget and need to build up some opt-ins and some decent revenue.

iContact also allows you to start a free 30 day trial of their system.

Constant Contact also allows you a 30 day free trial of their system.

I could go on and on and list 20 other providers out there, but you get the picture. Getresponse is not the only autoresponder system that offers a free or very low-cost trial.

When selecting an autoresponder company you first want to write down all the things that you think your business will need, then call the company and ask them your questions. They will also help you address things you might not have thought of.

After you do that part of your research, test out 2 or 3 autoresponders to check out and use their features first hand. Actually create opt-in forms, put them on your website, send out e-mails to your newly created yahoo, hotmail, ISP, and gmail accounts so you can test their delivery yourself.

    I use 3 different autoresponders:-

Autosenders - Had this one a while. Used for certain projects. Basic autoresponder but provides daily emails of subs/unsubs

Aweber - I use for the bulk of my IM stuff. Not the cheapest but good support available when I need them.

Customized self hosted - a mate runs a ebay business and customized an open source autoresponder script. I borrowed it and use it for some offline stuff. Wouldn't recommend messing around coding your own autoresponder as it took my mate months of testing and tweeking!

I think it's time to put a stop to "which is the best auto responder" threads. Hundreds of similar threads end up as as arguments between the same sets of members.

Those who use free auto responders to start off are justified in doing so. Paid auto responders have their advantages including complete ownership of lists and the absence of ads.

There are other repetitive threads like free vs paid hosting that also end up in the same way. Putting a stop/ limit to them would certainly enrich the quality of threads on the Forum.

What do you guys think about Self Hosted Systems?

Does it have too many cons? Since nobody mentions

Do we need a very good server to make the deliverability rate good ? Such as a dedicated one or a VPS would be fine?

Where are the cons when you can outsource to any number of delivery experts these days? The "self-hosted is the devil" argument is dead.

Now you can have the best of all worlds - self-host with full direct control of the goldmine that is your list AND choose your delivery provider. Better still, you can test them against each other to drive up your delivery instead of crossing your fingers and hoping your chosen provider can get your emails through...

...if you have the right software, of course.

Changing (or adding) delivery providers in self-hosted software is a million times easier than moving your list from one poorly performing 3rd party provider to another.

    Cheers,

In my opinion the most important factor one must consider for choosing an autoresponder is email Deliverability. That means the number of emails that go into the Inbox and NOT into the spam or junk folder. As per my research, high deliverability rates are quiet a complicated thing to maintain for autoresponder services.

I ' ve done some deliver ability testing with various autoresponder services, considering a lot of factors - factors like the sender's reputation and also real life testing to see how many emails are delivered into the inbox.

And as per my tests, I have observed that the top 2 Autoresponder's to chose that have high deliverability rates are :

    aweber.com

    and

    infusionsoft.com

First thanks to Paul Myers for putting all pertinent info on this topic in one thread.
Second, thanks to Alexa Smith for pointing me to it (from another thread).

Here's something I haven't heard much noise about: using free gmail as autoresponder.

    Pros:
    - uses free gmail which is, well, free...
    - gmail is actually the biggest webmail provider out there (according to wikipedia: it is the most widely used web-based email provider with over 425 million active users worldwide)

    Cons:
    - as far as I know you need to code your solution in order to use it as an autoresponder.

I don't do heavy email marketing as some of your guys, but I do manage my email funnels this way: my server talking directly to the gmail server for everything email-related. Works beautifully so far. The story here is that I actually wrote this code a couple years ago, but then moved to another project at the time so did not pay much attention to it. Then couple of weeks ago I had to revisit this code because I just launched my first WSO (called WSOPrototype - for the curious) and I actually needed something to handle/automate the emails influx generated by that event.

That was couple weeks ago. This week I feel like launching something new, and since I'm a coder I do coding stuff. So I've been looking into moving my gmail AR code into wso-land. The thing works, and costs me zip to run as gmail does all the heavy lifting for me with a smile (I do follow their rules and haven't had any problem so far).

So while studying the current autoresponder landscape, from what I can see, most/all AR all pretty much do the same basic stuff: edit basic html forms and emails, collect/manage lists, schedule broadcasts, group related items into campaigns. Then come some secondary candy: simple lists migration, single optins, tracking, split-testing, socials/mobile-app integration. Am I missing something?

Good. So for the few non-aweber-ized IMers still in the wild, maybe put this under your pillow and have a look at a gmail-based AR alternative in the WSO section in the next few days. Hopefully this baby will make it into Paul's list (post #2 of this thread).

    Cheers,
    Bryan

PS. just read kevinlairre's previous post (#69) about high deliverability. This is aweber's killer argument ... in a gmail context, I guess the simple workaround might be to simply start a new campaigns with fresh new gmail accounts ... because they are not blacklisted anywhere and such. Obviously not spamming and not getting blacklisted to begin with is even better...

Quite true. Aweber appears the market leader (just my guess, don't really have any numbers to back this assertion up), so all other aweber alternatives willingly-or-not need to position themselves in relation to aweber. Each newcomer position hopefully serves a distinct market segment. Therefore some newcomers will actually be "more" sophisticated than Aweber, while some less. All are needed because they serve different segments.

The nice thing with newcomers is that they are free to "push the envelope" because they have nothing to lose and can't displace entrenched elephants, so simply being a "me-too" is not a valid strategy. For established elephants in the field I'd say it is much harder (and often impossible) to reposition themselves with new technology: if they bring in too radical innovations they risk losing their current customer base, which they will never risk allienating.

Therefore true innovation usually comes from newcomers ... not that radical innovation is needed here ... after all AutoResponders are just the email equivalent to the Voice Answering Machine, isn't it? Nothing rocket science-ish... And now that I think about it, how many still have/use answering machines today? Therefore, how long until ARs follow the same path, and even more interesting question: what new technology will come to displace them?
hmm ... interesting food for thought...

I have a dedicated server and have several autoresponders and one is my own autoresponder service that I have not launched because I don't have the time now to maintain a service.

A real good self hosted solution is by Mark Hendricks called By-Pass Publisher.

It's just when your lists get as larger as mine, it become very costly to use an autoresponder service.

I have accounts at both Aweber and Getresponse, I use them for testing some of my applications. But, I don't like other businesses that dictate how I have to run my business.

So for these reasons, I use self hosted autoresponders.

I agree to a point - but given how easily you can get on spam lists even when you clearly aren't a spammer and you are following all the email sending rules - they are still those jerks who will report you just for giggles and then you have to explain yourself and ask to be taken off the spam lists - it happened to a client of mine who sells non-mmo software.

That is why I like a hybrid model:

      • host your own newsletter script that has an autoresponder but allows you to set how mail is sent : PHP mail, sendmail, or SMTP - (With SMTP you can use your Gmail account - though I wouldn't.)
      • I have looked at the services of SMTP.com - which gives you full control of your actual list, etc., etc., but uses their servers to actually send your mail - your server and IP is then protected.
win-win - anyone ever try that method?

Most good newsletter scripts allow you to grow a small to medium list and send email in increments so as not to overload your server's resources, but it still puts you at risk of some joe smoe saying he received spam from you .

Email marketing, to a certain extent, is best left to the pros - and that's probably why so many people choose Aweber, or GetResponse - they have everything covered and you can do everything from within their member areas.

For those of us who like to "tinker" - my vote goes to the hybrid model I described above - just so that you get to keep as much of your business - your business.

One angle I've never seen in any discussion: Aweber charges by the list, not the subscriber. I find this disturbing because there's nothing in their advertising to warn people. I transferred from 1SC on the recommendation of several people; when I found out they will merge 2 or more lists and avoid duplcates, it never occurred to me to ask, "But do you merge these lists when you bill?"

I have people optin in for several different freebies, but they'll all end on one list. I can move them from, say, List A for a specific freebie to List B, my main list. But if I do that, I can't send them an autoresponder series unique to List A. If I want to move them after 3 auttoresponder messages, I have to pay for an app. (That's what AWeber told me. They were totally unconcerned.)

Additionally your unsubscribes are counted as subscribers. To me, that's totally misleading. If someone has unsubscribed, you can't email them - period. I haven't figured out if you delete all your unsubscribes, do you delete them from ALL lists or just the one they wanted to leave?

So it seems that AWeber is great if you've got just one big list, or your lists are totally separate, or you're prepared to invest time and money in apps. I'd love to hear how other people are dealing with this.

This is 100% incorrect. They charge strictly by subscriber and if you also subscribe to their analytics. It is not by the list (you can create unlimited lists, this holds true of most of the big providers, not just Aweber). I think you've got your companies mixed up.

In the off chance that Aweber MIGHT have changed their policy recently, I went ahead and called them. They confirmed that they do NOT charge by the list, they charge by subscriber.

Additionally your unsubscribes are counted as subscribers. To me, that's totally misleading. If someone has unsubscribed, you can't email them - period. I haven't figured out if you delete all your unsubscribes, do you delete them from ALL lists or just the one they wanted to leave?
Not misleading at all, it's in their Terms Of Service. Though, admittedly, they don't make it easy for you to read them. Secondly, most of the major autoresponder companies do this.

You can delete them yourself or you can contact Aweber and they will do this for you (comes in handy when you have over 100 lists).

So it seems that AWeber is great if you've got just one big list, or your lists are totally separate, or you're prepared to invest time and money in apps. I'd love to hear how other people are dealing with this.
Wrong. Again. I've been with Aweber for nearly 10 years and with Getresponse for about 8. Based on what you've written here I find it hard to believe that you are actually using Aweber. I would strongly suggest watching their tutorial / training videos (they are pretty darn good) and if you have any questions, contact their customer support. You can even live chat with them Monday through Saturday.

Most of the big autoresponder companies have videos and live trainings that you can attend / watch; I strongly recommend going through those, no matter whom you are with.

I've got a MailChimp account and its been great. I'm still on the free account as they doubled their minimum list size threshold a while ago and that gave more leeway. Service and deliverability has been great and I have gotten used to their GUI which again is pretty simple to use.
That said,.. I'm now finding it a continual battle to patch custom scripts together in order to get other software to interface with MC. The standard two big names that you see optioned into dropdown fields on WarriorPro, JVzoo, DLguard etc seem to be Aweber and GetResponse.
After reading this thread I'm inclined to give GR a run as I like what I read. However,.. I just headed over to signup and noticed payment options only include credit cards and have no PayPal option. I don't have and don't want to have or use a credit card (I'm sure I'm not the only person with that policy). All my other online purchases (including hosting, domain names, memberships etc) are all done using PayPal. It works great. On ocassion I may have to do an online bank to bank transfer where the vendor doesn't use PayPal but virtually never do I get anyone unwilling to accept payments when offered.
I just got off the instant chat with GetResponse and the guy said that credit card was the only option. So I said I was interested in the 2,500 list deal for 12 months at $280 and could send them a direct PayPal email payment,... the response was "We would not be able to process a Paypal payment if it was sent to us."
I just don't understand the "we dont accept PayPal" policy by online marketing companies when PayPal is an industry standard in online payment. Yes subscriptions and payment agreements can be cancelled by PayPal users but so too can credit card subscriptions be cancelled and even payments made can be recovered in circumstances where the bank customer decides to become difficult for whatever reason.
Just checked and Aweber also seem to have a credit card payment only policy.
Wonder if Jim Ducharme would like to chime in on this post?

After reading this thread I'm inclined to give GR a run as I like what I read. However,.. I just headed over to signup and noticed payment options only include credit cards and have no PayPal option. I don't have and don't want to have or use a credit card (I'm sure I'm not the only person with that policy). All my other online purchases (including hosting, domain names, memberships etc) are all done using PayPal. It works great. On ocassion I may have to do an online bank to bank transfer where the vendor doesn't use PayPal but virtually never do I get anyone unwilling to accept payments when offered.

      Hi Russell,

I'm not sure about the actual reason. I could speculate, but that certainly wouldn't be fair and it wouldn't help you with your issue. I'll PM you my email address and I'll try my best to help sort something out for you. I don't think there's an alternative, but let's see.

Sorry to hear about your MC woes Russell. It sounds very familiar and there are quite a few posts on WF that follow the same general theme.

Just one of the MANY reasons I went self-hosted years ago and would never consider going back. The only policies I have to worry about are the ones I set for myself. I choose who I want to use to send my emails and am not restricted to the one I'm obliged to use because my AR provider told me I have to.

Trusting any of these guys with my most valuable asset seems like the wrong thing to do to my mind. That said if you're (not you Russell... but anybody) a newbie then going with a 3rd party is a good start until you gain more confidence.

    Hope that helps

I see a lot of talk about list ownership. When I build a list, do I not hold a copy of that list myself? Are these platforms MailChimp, AWeber, GetResponse, etc holding your lists hostage?
Also, if I already have a list, can I not add them to my AR??? Is that not allowed?

    I've used Aweber for years...love'em.

I've also used MadMimi which was very user-friendly. Though it lacked some of the capabilities that Aweber did.

In my estimation, if anybody is going to go for the long-term, than cost shouldn't be the deciding factor. Aweber is clearly the way to go.

    My 2 cents.

My years of testing delivery rates has only proven that delivery rates are a moving target. On Day 1 Constant Contact might beat out GR in one form of testing, then an hour later GR beats Constant Contact, etc.

But generally speaking, I have found GR's delivery rates to be pretty good, though not what they claim (same with Aweber).

If you really want to look at some stuff, here are a few places to begin to study server reputations of autoresponder companies.

    cysco, senderbase, senderscore, reputationauthority.org.

If you really start to study this stuff and track it, you will find some pretty crazy stuff. Like the fact that one of the more popular free autoresponders actually has a better server reputation than almost all the big boys everyone recommends so heavily. I am not saying that should be your choice, merely pointing out that the most heavily recommended solutions are often times not actually the best.

As Rod just mentioned, this stuff changes some all the time, but if you keep up with it you can spot trends for sure.

The server reputation scores at these and many other places have an affect on email deliverability.

I used GVO for a while , but I found out the deliverability rate is not that good , and heard Aweber closed someone's account without any further notice , because someone complained .

So now I use Getresponse , and I am so happy with it , the deliverability rate is amazing , it is very easy to create follow up . also you can deliver your emails at the same time world wide.

I've used IContact, GetResponse, ConstantContact, AWeber, GVO E-Responder pro, and ImnicaMail. They all work. Personally, I found tech support at GR to be inadequate. I suppose I like the professional look and power of AWeber the best, but I did not like some of the restrictions.

I've used ImnicaMail the most. It is simple, flexible and very affordable (like $3/mo). The opt-in forms are way too plain. Tech support is usually a little slow (3 to 4 days, sometimes more; occasionally 1-2 days). I'd like to be able to search across lists, but can't do that. I'm not actually sure whether deliverability is as good as others, because I am personally frustrated with suppression lists in general.

Mostly, I don't understand this issue, and I find that techs dance all around it, or simply get dismissive about it: How can email through my private ISP reach people just fine, but those same people end up on a permanent hard-bounce list thru my autoresponder and there is no way to revive them? Right now, I have numerous people on my Global Suppression List (which is irrevocable--a sort of GSL hell) that are monthly paying subscribers to my business and who email me regularly. But I can't get them off my GSL, so my autoresponders and campaigns won't reach them I would think that by now, this problem would be resolved through all of these companies. But they seem to act like: "Oh well, so you are losing good customers to hard bounces; that's the breaks. Yawn."

Paul, you might be tired of the same questions over and over again (having "seen the same things argued endlessly for the past 10+ years"--understood), but as a user of these products I'm tired of techs and owners dismissing these issues just because they've seen them before. (Not that you did that. I'm talking about techs with the companies.) The reason these things keep coming up over and over again, is that this is a continual problem. What good is an autoresponder service if it keeps chewing up my list and spitting it out into the GSL?

All of this, frankly, causes me to want to stop using all of these services.

This is not an anti imnicamail post. That is a fine and flexible program, as far as such these things go. It is the whole suppression-list problem that gets to me and that I'd really like to know how to resolve.

I prefer Aweber. At on e point I even installed my own script on my server, just so I would not have to worry about the monthly payments....that proved to be a disaster. You have to pay for good hosting which ended up the same as going with Aweber. So I decided to leave the techie stuff to them and I can concentrate on writing.

I do not try others autoresponder services because each one has its own learning curve. Aweber has worked great for me so I will continue using it.

You can't really avoid that, nor do you need to: the recipients know that they opted in to an email address-list, by providing their email address for you to send them email, anyway. (If they didn't, you probably shouldn't really be sending them anyway, and an autoresponder company rightly won't allow you to use their facilities for it.)

Back in the day not to long after the CAN-Spam Act of 2003 when we wanted to do a special invite to jv partners for a product launch, we would use the Arp3 autoresponder to send out an email to our list of JV Partners inviting them to our launch.

Arp3 allowed us to remove the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email message. Our goal was to word the invitation very personally to seem like we were sending out single emails and not using an autoresponder.

I think Mark Hendricks' By-Pass-Publisher autoresponder still allows the unsubscribe link to be removed.

I've been online as a list builder for a very long time and I have seen and done a lot of things that would not be deemed proper practice for today.

        Just a little history lesson.

        Best regards,

I write copy/email swipes for marketers in a few opps, and as a result I have to set up their campaigns/broadcasts and the whole enchilada.

    These are my thoughts
Aweber is awesome ..customer svc is superb! BUT their new interface sucks! Ppl joining AWEBER now, may find that it's not smooth

GVO is decent.. it's super cheap when compared to aweber/getresponse. But support isn't the greatest, yes there is a live chat function but sometimes it's easier to SPEAK with someone and know that they are looking at the very same screen with you.

GetResponse also has great customer service.. but I don't like their interface as much as awebers.

Global NPN .. surprisingly has slightly better deliverability than aweber. the pricing is cheap, but support may take up to one day.

If I personally were starting today .. I would go with either global npn (no I am NOT an affiliate.. just a user) or GetResponse.. if I were on a budget I would go with NPN.
    Just my thoughts.

I am using Tickletrain. There are both free and paid plans, but it's good for automating follow-ups for unanswered emails and leads. You just include a special email address in the BCC field of the email you want tracked and if you don't get a response, it reminds you of the email

If all these people jump off a bridge, I have to go then?

      Ha ha, just kidding. :p

I prefer GetResponse. One reason for this is that I'm German and GetResponse takes the trouble to offer their services in my language.

Although not 100%, but the thought that counts.

I just think if a large company wants to earn in the country where I live, a lot of money, then it should at least try to speak my language.

      And that makes GetResponse.

We here in Germany have also the peculiarity, which we have called "umlauts". These are: ä, ü, ö

And unlike AWEBER and MailChimp, GetResponse has no problems with it.

This is my main reason. But let's be honest, the other providers are very good.

I think that has something to do with "love"

The one loves brown-haired and the other blonde, so here it is the same.

I wish you a successful week

I would never go with a 3rd party autoresponder. I've tried Aweber, Get Response, Mail Chimp and others, and have always left after some problem or another. All it takes is one person to forget they signed up to your list, flag you as a spammer, and that's it! Your account gets closed, your list deleted, and you've got to start all over again. These guys take a zero tolerance approach, and you're presumed guilty. End of story. Protestations of innocence come to naught. Been there, seen it, done it, got the T-shirt.

I've been running a self hosted system for years now with out too much trouble. Any blocking of e-mails by ISPs (something the 3rd party providers scare people about) can usually be sorted out by contacting the blocking company's service desk.

The best thing about running your own script IMHO, is you have complete control of your list. Just back it up regularly, and you'll be fine. If you decide to change software etc. you won't have to ask all your list members to opt-in again - a big advantage.

Right now I'm using Parabots - Parabots Autoresponder System (not an affiliate link) - which is a free script, and I've been very happy with it.

If you're on shared hosting, though, SMTP relay services are a must. A search on Google for "smtp email relay service" just now returned 391,000 results, so there are plenty to choose from. Use the SMTP on your server while your list is small, and move over to a service when you start to eat into your e-mail allocation.

Your insight is great, thank you. The mailing list shall be under control of those who collect it. You are doing yet another great example how relations shall be built, and that is by handling it personally.

Software as a service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has changed much of the Internet including it decreased the awareness of people in relation to their data.

Mr. Richard Stallman, the major co-creator of GNU/Linux operating system, said:

With SaaSS, the users do not have a copy of the executable file: it is on the server, where the users can't see or touch it. Thus it is impossible for them to ascertain what it really does, and impossible to change it. SaaS inherently gives the server operator the power to change the software in use, or the users' data being operated on.

I think it all depends on if you want to build tags, and build email responders that are able to change / adapt depending on the behavior taken by the recipient.

For example - if someone clicks on the link, send them the next email.

If a few days go by, and nobody clicks... then send a "nag" email.

Can aWeber do this kind of thing? How easy is it to set up?

Recently, I learned that email GMAIL, YAHOO etc are getting better at measuring your engagement. Meaning - the less clicks and opens you get, the more you'll go into the junk folder.

So I created a drip campaign that requires the user to click on a link in order to advance to the next email in the series.

The benefit to the user is they don't get emails when they're overloaded / not ready.

The benefit to me is that if the person "tunes out" -- I don't send a bunch of emails that are likely to get "unsubscribe" clicked - or "spam" clicked - or just no action at all...which the email providers take to mean "spam." anyway.

      I personally use:
      Aweber
      Getresponse
      RM

I also use ARP3 and ArpReach (own hosted) with Amazon SES

Deliverability relies on so many factors, there is in my opinion no comparison possible between these services.

I was using GVO for hosting and AR but stopped because of the very poor hosting performances, useless support and also they send emails to your subscriber lists

I would recommend to stay away from them and to stick with reputable AR companies.

If you are "Techy Savy" you should consider a self hosted solution with SES (SMTP) integration. This could save you a lot of money in the long term if you have a lot of subscribers but can be a bit challenging to setup.

They all suck nowadays because of Google's gmail update all your gmail addresses will go in the promotions tab and your click thru rate will plummet if you are using any of the popular email services out there.

I am looking for an alternative to get back in the inbox where I belong with my subscribers so any suggestions would be appreciated.

a lot of gmail addresses are virtually useless because of good old Google.

Gotta love Google notice the sarcasm there

If more than half of your subscribers signed up using gmail you are taking a big hit anyway you slice it as in my case.

We have actually found open rates go UP with the promotions tab.

Engagement is KEY, and if you truly engage with your subscribers, and send valuable content, you will have no issue, regardless of the service you use.

Imnicamail is best and also affordable. Its $14 a month for 5000 subscribers as compared to others which is $50. As far as Self-hosted scripts Interspire email newsletter is best one. Don't have a budget than you go for webinsta mailign manager which is free and good one.

I've used most of the web-based solutions, Aweber, Icontact, 1ShoppingCart, Mailchimp & ARP3 and ARPReach.

IMHBAO (in my humble but accurate opinion) if you are tech savvy you get maximum control and management with a hosted solution but they are all geeky wonky and if you are a techie person you can lose your mind figuring out how to do simple stuff.

Aweber has good stuff, but like 1ShoppingCart they have become so "us" and so not "customers" they feel like they are in love with themselves and their website - but they do not allow you to move clients from one list to another without sending them an optin confirmation?

Aweber is rigid and hyperparanoid about compliance and don't seem to have heard about the tools they could be using on their side to test list health and let a new client upload a list they've been mailing on another service for years.

Their response to this is that if someone won't "re-optin" when you move your list - then they don't want your email. This is BS - how many of us have had clients buy months after not opening any emails from us. This is just a myopic excuse for their own "against company policy"

The only thing I like about Aweber is that they have an Already Subscribed URL - while Mailchimp by default sends an existing subscriber to an error page - I've mailed them for 2 years to change this - the monkey is thinking about it.

If you send an offer to your list they should be able to enter their name and email and go right to the thank you page without hitting a stone wall with "Already Subscribe" (go away customer) page - or a default error.

Mailchimp is cute and will let you upload your list to them and give them a mailing - which is GREAT for moving your list but they have their finger on the Spammer trigger and a small number of complaints will have you explaining yourself via email - and you can get shut down.

Try sending a pure affiliate link to your list on mailchimp - it's against their terms of service and they can nix you for it. (Then try to go with Aweber with your list - and you'll have to RE-CONFIRM them all again - and again if you want to subsegment them after they are on the list - unless you can tell the future and setup a parser.

      MY BANDAID

I've been collecting people in Wishlist Member and Aweber - but then weekly backing them up and importing them into MailChimp to send them general updates and offers - I figure they'll terminate me any day because I promoted an affiliate a week ago. SINNER! 8-)

      What I'm Trying Now:

I just signed up to use JVZoo and they LOVE and have a big handshake deal with GetResponse for automatically opting customers in - without a confirmation email - if you use their API in the shopping cart checkout - a cinch.

They even let me have a free trial healthy enough to get started.

I went ahead and paid the 2nd level price for 2500 subscribers - cheap - I think like $25. I uploaded a list of 1000 existing clients - and am embarking on an instant 90% affiliate deal for my (Moderated) and paying instant commissions so I'll get to test the automagic single optin via the checkout.

I've never used JVZoo except to buy Geoff Shaw's dandy Kindling course - I wanted to do an instant Paypal commission thing and the $7 Secrets Script was just too natty - I am happily using Robert Plank and Lance Tamashiro's Paper Template with Wordpress.

If I were starting out today - I would use GetResponse because they have a ton of great tools, simple to use, have room to grow, and they are happily working with Wishlist Member and a bunch of other things.

      IMHBAO

Rapidmailer is full of problems. It has screwed up with Wordpress hosting of many clients and their support is not responding. Checkout rapid mailer threads on facebook. A tons of customers are report same problem, the software is not compatible with latest version of wordpress and it has caused all sort of problems for those who installed it.

I think having a Wordpress based mailing system is bad idea

I'm finding that the Get Resonse web forms don't appear to have the flexibility of design that the Aweber forms have? I researched the top autoresponders a while back and for me it came down to Aweber and Get Response. Get Response currently offers a list of up to 1000 subscribers for less monthly cost than Aweber charges per month for 500 subscribers.

    Adding to the list...

I recently use Response Magic. I'm pretty happy with their service. In addition, I host my own AR called Rapid Mailer. Combined with the OTO, I have a complete replacement of commercial AR out there. The beauty is I don't have to deal with their restriction.

I maybe didn't make it clear in my last post that I'm using Get Response at the moment. Yesterday I experienced ridiculously slow loading times for my wordpress blog - 30 seconds plus. After some investigation I found that a scripted affiliate link for Get Response and a Get Response web form were causing the problem. In fact, it was the Get Response website which has been down and at this point in time, is still down. This isn't the first time either and I understand that Aweber have been having problems recently too.

Anyone know of a reliable, affordable autoresponder service?

I too am a newbie re ListBuilding (not IM in general) and am fairly technically proficient so I'll give my (limited experience) opinion based on what I have found via research and my limited experience.

First of all, after researching Mail Chimp, Get Response and Aweber, I went with GetResponse because:

          a) GR is the cheapest once you get up to 1000+ optins. MailChimp's price goes up ridiculously (imho) once you build a big list (and that's the whole point isn't it?) so I ruled out MailChimp for that reason.

          b) I personally find Mailchimp's site not very user friendly. It just doesn't seem to be set up very well. Maybe that's just me.

          c) Aweber is the "old pro" of the group; however they remind me of Google from what I hear about how they are very intolerant of spam complaints and don't give you much wiggle room in that regard.
          d) GetResponse seems to be more tolerant of IMers than AWeber. (I can't be sure; I'm basing this only on what I read from others who seem to know.) But I tend to dislike very authoritarian type companies. [I despise Google (with good reason).]

All in all, from my substantial research (NOT experience) GR seems to be the best choice for a newbie.

They make it pretty easy to set up a form on Wordpress and on Facebook. It doesn't take any tech knowledge at all to do so.

The ONE complaint I have about GetResponse so far is that their email support was not very good the one time I used it. Unlike most support these days I found their CHAT support better than email support. (Usually I find Chat options with most companies to be the worst of all.)

I am very happy to have just found out that GR has phone support. I don't know if Mail Chimp and Aweber do or not. I think that generally speaking, for newbies especially, phone support is always a good thing to have at your disposal.

I'm surprised that nobody has cited a single
    CRM system?

The auto responders listed are all great systems
but the advanced marketers usually migrate
to a CRM based auto responder because the
segmentation and automation are so much
    better.

Treating your list the same is a sin that too many
folks make and it's costing them money each
    and every day.

All you need to do is look at your immediate
family and close friends to see that there is
    no "1 message fits all".

Unless your system is auto-segmenting your
list, you have a messaging problem.

That's right. Follow-up e-mail marketing is all about relations, and that belongs to some kind of relationship management. Basically each CRM shall have those options such as autoresponder and email marketing, but also letter, SMS and other communication lines as well.
      • You send a template message to a client? You should know that client received this message and on which date.
      • You should have in your CRM, indications, if client clicked here and there, and what kind of interest he has shown. Such indications reveal the prospect, and later make sales.

    1. Aweber
    2. MailChimp

I haven't tested the other options because I found out that these two are great for building a responsive email list.

Undeniably, Aweber is the best. Affiliate marketers are making money on Aweber, and you know, subscribers trust Aweber, and so they will be trusting marketers who are using Aweber! But it's not free!

There's a free version of MailChimp but they are pretty strict with their rules, but if you can keep them, you will enjoy it when you are still building your list, if you are using WordPress, then there's a AutoChimp plugin that would make list building a lost easier!

I'm still new to all this, but one thing I don't get is why everyone only suggest options like Get Response, mailchimp and Aweber for email lists, as opposed to smtp servers like smtp.com, Amazon SES or mailjet combined with some software like sendblaster or Atomic Mail Sender? Comparing price alone the big 3 does not even come close to SMTP servers and I feel like you have more over all control and you get to maintain the list your self with your own software.

So again I'm new to all this and maybe there's something I'm missing or not understanding, but what do you really get from Get Response, mailchimp or Aweber that makes up for the huge price?

I'm using this setup and its OK but with some minor issues:
-the editor is very old, lacks new/mobile/responsive templates
-autoresponder editing is a bit counterintuitive (you have to check some options to have new autoresponders sent to your current list)
-no conversion tracking & reporting (very few providers have this anyway(

otherwise, pricing wise, its a killer combo

I took some time a few years ago to properly choose my autoresponder after considering that to move my lists later down the line could be real hassle.

Suffice to say I went with Aweber. And yes I had played around with a 'free' one as well as the 'self hosted ' stuff.

I decided back then to let Aweber deal with List Management they were experts in and I would deal with the Marketing side of things. It's worked well for me so far.

I am Sendy buyer myself. It's really great. However, I don't really like the technical aspect of managing servers and all.

I found MailGet which is pretty amazing. It's Hosted Email Tool running on Amazon SES on Cloud.

This is best that is best my self promotion is best blah blah blah

everyone saying this or that is best without any real reason as to why

    1. Aweber has better deliverability rate but has more rules and restrictions just like how Google operates

    2. Mailchimp - Don't use them if you're in the IM/MMO niche because you will get the boot

    3. Getresponse is less strict than Aweber but their deliverability is not as good ( can't inbox hotmail )

I use and love GetResponse, mainly because of two reason. First, the ability to import email contacts and second is single opt-in functionality for default campaign after signing up for GetResponse account via Jvzoo.

I have used Aweber a few years now however there are a few things I might have wanted Aweber to do at the time that they did not and still don't and it was to do with Co Reg leads (ignore if this sounds alien).

If you are looking to import leads then give Aweber a miss or look for another way to qualify your leads.

Anyway Aweber like any other business such as Google has to protect that business so you need to determine what your needs are then see which of the large number of companies out there meets your needs be that Aweber, Getresponse, mailchimp or what have you.

With all that said I still vote for Aweber.

BTW I use single opt in for my buyers list for instance so it is not an impossible thing to do however you are "Strongly Recommend" to use the double opt in which protects you from spam complaints but I think it is too much of a dance if someone is already on your list and you are moving them from one list to another. Just my way of doing things.

I am using Aweber, GR & TrafficWave.

I found no difference in quality apart from couple of features here and there.
Pricing is main difference. And TrafficWave has a Falt fee irrespective of number of subscribers.

So many of you are recommended GetResponse. I wonder why, because I have very bad experience with it. It has lots of bugs that can make you crazy when you must fast complete your mailing. Support often can't help you. They are sending notification to IT and nothings change.

The best email marketing service and autoresponder is Constant Contact. I have been using their service for a few years now and have no complaints.

However, it is important to do some research before jumping on the bandwagon though. What's best for my business might not be good for yours.

I made a promise to myself this week that I would sift through some of the timeless older threads and posts on here to see what I came up with. So much useful stuff going back years. This is a great thread, and I'll be hunting down more never-ending threads from now on.

Here we go then...I use GetResponse. I started using GR about three months ago, and stayed up for many hours editing and installing 29 emails over a 55 day run, and testing all the links in them. Not for the faint-hearted!

The one thing that made me choose GR over AW was that GR is slightly cheaper and they now have a Beta Test Landing Page Designer with 100s of customisable templates for newer people to learn with. I know I'll be doing my own free pages soon, but just to get things going, this seemed a good starter option. They limit the number of subscribers (not contacts as I first thought) to 1000 to start with, and you upgrade as your list grows. The second upgrade is 2500.

My list is growing slowly but surely. I am in favour of gaining trust with my list over a period of time, and preparing them to purchase, rather than sending out thousands of clicks and getting anonymous responses. I use a regular blog for this, and give high-value free and low price offers which builds up trust in people. This hopefully makes the list small but powerful.

    Off to sift through some

Sounds like you are on a good slow and steady path.

I didn't know GR had this Beta Test Landing Page Designer. That is a smart move, imo, for GR to reach into a new Market like that. It make total sense. Iam sure AW will follow suit

Hi, thank you for such a helpful thread. I have one question: should I use different autoresponder for customers that use different languages? I mean, if I send emails to Chinese and English customers, should I use Aweber for Chinese and GR for English? (assuming that I have two Chinese and English customer lists from 2 different websites)

Hi everyone, how about Traffic Wave?

The price is great and they have a good afilliate program.
It´s easy to use, not as beautiful as GR and Aweber but the price stays the same as your list grows.

I am looking alternative to aweber or get response ( as not able to pay monthly fee..ok with one time fee) ...My question is : Whether rapid mailer is proving all type of services like Aweber .

whether Rapid mailer is good tool to collect emails from squeeze or optin page means we can set squeeze page where people can put their email & Rapid mailer collect such leads or Rapid mailer is email sender software..Confused ???????????

and if Rapid mailer is not right alternative to Aweber or Get response then pls guide which product to use for collecting & broadcasting of emails i.e. proper list building solutions...Pls tell only one time fee products. Can't afford monthly payment products

    I wouldn t identify only 1 autoresponder.
My advice is to choose the best for you:

awaber: is maybe the best, the most reliable because it offer the best "no spam risk" service.
mailchimp is another good service, perfect for newbie because id free under 2000 subscribers.
Getresponse: (that I use): offer a good service in terms of no spam and it sold at a good price!

I have used TW earlier. if you are happy with only double optins (sometime you may want to do single optins), then it has massive value.. I am not sure how's their deliverabliity now a days, but when I was using it 3 years ago, it was fine...

Another thing is. Import contacts.. I had over 1000 subscribers in getresponse and I wanted to switch to TW.. when I imported subscribers to it, they sent confirmation emails to all of those.. and only around 50 out of 1000 imported.. LOL

So, if those things (like single optins, and importing contacts) do not bother you, then yah it is value for money, as it also has very nice affiliate comp plan

Also you can try kingresponse as better than TW and decent pricing. and much better comp plan

I think it depends on your individual business needs, and your strategy; for example:

    - Getresponse, Aweber and Mail Chimp are simple, easy to use autoresponders which are fairly cheap, and cover the basics extremely well.

    - whereas if you want a shopping cart integrated, and an all-in-one system, then Infusionsoft is your best bet.

We use Getresponse, and we absolutely love it!

      Hi,

What is the best e-mail service that allows automatic tagging?

By automatic tagging I mean, for example, people who sign up for newsletter A, is tagged "newsletter A", people who sign up for newsletter B, is tagged "newsletter B", if there are people on both lists, they just receive both tags and don't become duplicete entries.

      Thanks a lot!

    Auto Responder.
There are several well-known Email Auto mail responders, including Aweber, iContact and Get Response and mailchimp . They are used to automate email distribution Lists for mass email send outs, and to send a series of pre-sequenced, pre-written email send outs and sales funnels.

Yes it can - depending on how big your List is, and how you want to use your list to market your website online. If you only want to start building your List of Subscribers by designing and installing a Subscribe By Email Optin Form on your blog, send Welcome emails, and send out weekly newsletters to your trusty band of fans, then a Free Email system is fine. And Mailchimp's Forever Free account will make this very easy to do. The Free option is almost fully automated, and makes managing your Subscriber List a breeze.

    Hello,

I am glad I found this thread before starting a new one for the exact same topic.

I wanted to check with everyone here which service is recommended for the following:

    1) Importing lists without having to send out confirmation emails again.
    2) Good for the Internet Marketing niche as I read in some places not all services prefer IM links in their emails.

    Thanks.

Was doing some throughough reading on the best autoresponder list and have some summary opinions which I hope will help some:
    1) BenchMark - Great starter option
    2) GetResponse - Great as strictly as an email autoresponder (not automation and CRM as ActiveCampaign)
    3) ActiveCampaign - Good for email automation

AVOID: ImnicaMail - You're better off giving your money away please. Spend time and your emails don't get delivered. Their website loads slow in itself.

BTW Aweber is not the best as most people think it is, it's features are very basic, especially if you're not in the IM niche.

I thought there would be a lot of diversity in this thread, but that's not the case,

... most have said Aweber and GetResponse.

It's expected, because most here are in the IM niche, so, yeah.

ConvertKit or ActiveCampaign are far better.
