It seems most people round here who get low open rates do so as they have low quality subcribers on their list.

Usually built from cold traffic sent to squeeze pages and then bribed to opt in with a freebie. Flawed method and low open rates are the norm.

Not much you can do to increase them as the people on your list have NO idea who you are, don't care what you have to say, and didn't want your follow up emails anyway just that freebie you offered them.

If you instead deliver them a ton of value BEFORE they opt in through a blog, product, or content rich site for example and THEN ask them to opt in for more of the same you'll find they expect and WANT your emails and will look out for them.

That's when you start seeing decent open rates and can work on less important things like headlines. Now headlines ARE important and can make big changes but if your subscriber doesn't want to receive emails from you it doesn't really matter what the headline is they don't want an email from you.

Trivial things like send times and day of the week are just not worth worrying about IME. I've tested it many times it makes little difference.

Avoid the terms "free" and "percent off" in subject lines.

Also, you really have to give a lot of value in your emails. If people assign you to the "Promotions" tab in Gmail, you're done. In other words, your email can no longer be:

    -> Salutation
    -> My great new product
    -> Why you should care
-> Please click through to squeeze page

Sure, if you have huuuuge list you will still make money with this, but if not, you have to give to receive.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

referral traffic is ideal if some says something like your the greatest thing since slice bread your gonna get more open rates.

if traffic is from cold sources then nobody is gonna pay you any attention.

opens rates dont matter tho, as long as you have a strong following you will be ok. People listen to an expert, but people will follow a leader

The things that determine your open-rates relate to what happens (from the visitors' perspective) before, while and immediately after they opt in.

Here are three little threads that might help you. They all explain the "common mistakes" people make, that result in their having low open-rates ...

    1. What are the essential things to know about list building?

    2. What to send people when they opt in

    3. Sick of Emails Not Being Opened?

Effective marketing, referrals, strong sales skills, and strategic questions are the keys to creating favorable attention. Diligent follow-through and above-and-beyond customer service are the keys to maintaining it.

If everything that you are doing is in order and makes sense (quality content, not blasting offers, respecting your subscribers, etc) than try some little tweaks. Here's two: Only send your emails Mon through Fri. Only send your emails from 6am to 9am. Good luck.

Emails sent to my list certainly aren't cold emails. People opt in to my list very well warmed up in 99% of cases,

maybe then your emails aren't inboxing well since there must be some issue with your set up or there must be some trigger words.

let me know if you want me to provide an assistance regarding the same, but for that I will need some details to understand the problem.

    Hey

Open rates really depend from niche to niche. For example in the IM niche my open rates in my autoresponder are in the upper 20s to mid 30%. But..in another niche Im in completely out of the IM niche my open rates are near 80% so its awesome.

My tips are just provide great value, AND use cliff hangers at the end of each email. Tease them with what you're going to release next.

Make the titles short and simple. If they are too long they will get cut off from the display. Keep the titles relevant and descriptive of you. If you have a good relationship with your list they will open mail they instantly recognize to be from you. Put the value to the list in the title. For example, instead of putting "50% sale happening today" put "10 Ways to Make Your Business More Money" or something of value like that. Then mention the sale in a link below your top ten list. They will only open the email if they know it will benefit them.

You should pay attention to those things to increase your open rate:

    1. People on your list should be willing to hear from you. Having good leads in your list is the first factor that will impact your email performance.

    2. Using a good follow up / newsletter provider is essential to achieve good delivery. Stick with services that have passed the test of time and know their stuff such as Getresponse or Aweber.

    3. Write a killer subject line that is relevant, highlight benefits and grab the attention of your readers.

An interesting topic with lots of responses! I guess it also comes with practice and you can't ignore the stats as well.

Maybe your open rate is low because many of your subscribers used fake or secondary email addresses while opting in. If you're using Aweber, then filter your subscribers as following:

    1) No opens since 01/06/2014
    2) Date added before 01/06/2014

You'll see the subscribers who haven't opened any of your emails in the last 2 months. You can delete them. This way you can eliminate fake subs from your list, and you can decrease your monthly AR costs.

I agree, it is good to clean out the list when you start noticing a decreasing rate of opening.

The best way is to keep track of what subject lines get you to open them.

One thing to take note of is what spammers do. I'm not saying you want to be a spammer but some of them are very good in the subject lines they use in that some people can't not open the email.

I've had this happen to me several times.

Subscribers aometimes use fake emails when they opt in to your page which is why i like to create thank you page informing the subscriber that whatever i promised them will be sent to the email address they provided and if they would like to change it and use a more convient one the can click the link to landing page and place another email address in. Some people send a subscriber directly to whatever they promise them and they use a fake email to get it.

I would make the subject something that stands out from the other 100 emails they get a day. Very few that I open unless I'm just trying to figure out what it is about.

I've written emails for over 14 years for my own businesses... and 2 subject lines used to get the best open rates:

    1. Here's your free gift
    2. Can I ask you an important question

The problem is, you can't go to the well too much on those.

So now, I just make a list of a dozen headlines or so... based on what the email is about.

Then, I choose the best headline to use as an email subject line... whether it's curiosity provoking benefit oriented, problem solving, etc...

When you think about it, email subject lines are really nothing more than headlines.

2 tips that have helped me out over the years.

Go to the book store, or use magazines.com and find a magazine or two that is in your niche.

See what they use on the cover for copy. Often times, cover copy of a magazine can make kick ass email subject lines.

Also, if you are sending out an email and there's a lot riding on it, I've actually set up Google ads and wrote several ads using the same copy I'd use in my email subject line... and then let it run a bit and see which ad got the highest click through rate.

Chances are, the Google ad with the highest click through rate may also get the best open rate.

Anyways, hope any of this helps!

    Shawn

A lot of content related feedback, you may also want to check and see your email server score.
If you have a bad email server score, regardless of how great your content is, it will never be delivered into their inbox.
