I need to distribute an email to our customers and I need to know some free solutions of sending emails, it could be something completely simple. Any recommendations?

Thank you

Mailchimp has a free version (limits the number of people and advertises mailchimp in the email, but it's free and pretty good).

Depends on just what sort of customers and mailing list you're talking about. From the typical marketer standpoint Mailchimp is the closest thing you're going to get to free, though as others point out the features are a bit limited. Still, if you're using the mailing list to promote then getting a proper opt-in manager is a good thing.

On the other hand, if the mailing is a way to keep in touch with existing customers like those in an offline business, you can roll your own using SugarCRM community edition. You install it on a web server, then would import your customer's email addresses (probably easiest using a CSV list from a spreadsheet program like Excel), then you can setup whatever mailing you want.

The tricky part is that on most shared hosting plans (like what you'd get at Hostgator for $9.99/mo or the like) you have a limit for how many emails you can send an hour. So, once you install it you would need to tell it to only send say 10 emails per minute. It might take a while to get through everything, but the control is entirely on your end. Of course, so is the responsibility--you'd probably need to hire someone to set it up for you, so you should weigh that cost vs the monthly rate of signing up for an existing service like Aweber.

Check out ImnicaMail. I'm not affiliated with them and don't have an account there either, yet.

I've been with GetResponse and don't have any complaints really, but a friend recently turned me on to this site and I believe I'll be switching over in July. Price wise there's no competition (ImnicaMail is free up to 1,000 subscribers and the paid plans are much cheaper than the two bigs) and from what my friend said he loves the features and has no delivery problems, or problems with his mail being redirected to the spam folder.

Mailchimp is alright, too, I've used them in the past and still have an account, but I don't know, I don't personally like the feel of Mailchimp.

Either of them two will work for your stated needs though. GL

Here's the controversial but experience-based reality: nobody really "needs" a free autoresponder: people just think they do, through having only partial information on the subject.

It's easy to imagine that there'll be some long-term benefit to starting that way, and that in some meaningful sense it'll be better than not having one at all. It isn't usually so.

Aweber charges $1 for the first month and $19 per month thereafter. If you're not covering $20 in two months, the reality is that you don't have a business at all, and that's not something that using a free autoresponder is somehow magically going to correct.

In my opinion, using a free autoresponder is one of the very most ill-advised and misguided things one can do, in internet marketing.

Few people are more keen on list-building than I am, but I think for most people it's better to start without an autoresponder, temporarily, than it is to use a free one. And (unlike the situation with regard to free hosting), with autoresponders it IS specifically the fact they're free that causes the potential disasters/risks, in my view.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether it can possibly be wise to entrust the safe-keeping and security of your business's greatest, most important and least replaceable asset (your list) to a company whose business model is that of being a free autoresponder. I think that it's generally right at the start of their internet marketing careers, when people understandably have the least judgement about such situations, and the least awareness of the facts and realities involved, that such mistakes tend to be made.

I suspect that people imagine something along the lines of "Well, I can always start with a free autoresponder until I've made some money, and then make the switch to a better one". Usually, one can't easily do that. Moving established lists from one autoresponder company to another is typically hugely difficult, and very commonly results in all one's subscribers needing - at best - to opt in all over again. Many Warriors have commented here that they've lost between two-thirds and three-quarters of their lists, this way!

Some people just shrug and say "Well, you can always back it up regularly, can't you?". Easily said. What are you going to do with it, after you've "backed it up"? How are you going to import it elsewhere? Who's going to allow you to import it elsewhere, and under what conditions? (People don't always think about these problems. But the experience of Warriors who have actually had to try to do this seems to me to point to its being something of a nightmare and a disaster).

Some free autoresponders even monetize their own business partly by sending affiliate-spam to their own clients' subscribers or partly by sending their client's new subscribers (right after they've opted in) to an affiliate promotion of their own!

In the case of Mailchimp, obviously enough, the situation's very clear to anyone willing to make the effort to read their Terms of Service. In the case of other "free autoresponders" (of which there are several), it's usually very much less clear, unfortunately. Typically, those recommending one, in my opinion, are only recent list-builders themselves and may not yet be aware of some of the longer-term pitfalls.

Some of these companies even attach to every email their customers send out to their lists a clickable link advertising their own free service!

It's literally the autoresponder equivalent of having a little website advising people about <whatever> sitting at Yola, with a big clickable link at the bottom of the page advertising "Get your free website here with Yola".

      How professional does that look?!

Some of these companies also don't yet have a very well established business model. Who really knows if they're still going to be there 3 years later? But if they're not, that can be an absolute disaster to your business!

If necessary, I'd make a sale or two without having a list, and then start with Aweber when one has $1 to spare.

The set-up costs even for internet marketing businesses which do everything professionally, right from the start, are absolutely minuscule ...

My perspective only - there are others who disagree, of course.

One or two of the people who disagree are owners of free autoresponder businesses.

And some others who disagree, I think, are pretty inexperienced and have maybe not yet encountered any problems - in contrast to others here whose warning-posts can readily be found with the search function, by those willing to look.

Here are some threads/posts which will convince you not to try "Mailchimp", I hope and trust, if you take the time to read them.

I have to disagree with Alexa, and I can guarantee you that there are people in this forum who will agree, too, that Aweber isn't the answer to all that ails you. It's a good service, I'm sure, but there are too many flag-waving affiliates among us. And it's kind of poor form (no, really bad form) to dismiss people who disagree with you as having a competing interest, being a noob, etc...

The OP asked specifically about free solutions and if anyone had opinions on any, not a sales pitch on why Aweber rocks, or anything about building a list.

I hate looking at a new car only to have the salesman tell me how it's much wiser to spend more on the more expensive and much higher quality model.
"You don't need that Corolla, you just think you do."

I recommended a service I've only heard about from a friend, not tried myself, as an option for the OP to check out because it's free for up to 1,000 subscribers. I use GetResponse, and have used MailChimp... I've had no delivery issues with either. I ran a smaller (but profitable), blog-based list using WYSIJA (now MailPoet) and it worked great for a small list. There is life (and money to be made) outside of Aweber and GetResponse, believe that.

I may be a new poster, but I'm not a noob and not everyone needs a paid service, or the most expensive and feature-rich AR, simple as that. Different business models or situations have different needs.

LOL ... if I'd ever actually said that, I'd perhaps have to disagree with myself, too - but since you're misquoting me, I'm apparently spared that embarrassment.

Are there really? How do you know this? I've been here for nearly 6 years and I have no idea how many of them there are, and couldn't even name a single one. I've never been an affiliate for any autoresponder service, myself. By the way there's absolutely no flag-waving here at all: affiliate-links aren't allowed in Warrior Forum posts (or in signature-files) anyway, so - rightly - that would scarcely be relevant to a discussion of this kind.

Apart from all that, well done, and welcome to the Warrior Forum.

EzEzine.com is free up to 200 subscribers. No auto-responders though. If you just want to broadcast/send messages and gather new subscribers, it works fine. However,if you want to build an IM business, you really do need auto responders and should sign up for something else for a fee.

    Hi All,

I paid for accounts with both AWeber and iContact and my test emails are going to my spam folder because they are coming from AWeber and iContact server (I did use my own .com email address and not a free Gmail address). My "Confirm Your Subscription" email passes the spam test and does not contain any "FREE" words that may flag as spam. Is there a better solution available? It does me no good to have all my new subscribers having the confirmation email going straight to spam.

I suspect that most of the people who want everything to be free are just (unsurprisingly) a little naive about "how business works", even if perfectly serious about their intentions.

I also suspect that a lot of aspiring internet marketers, through no fault of their own at all, but just through lack of information, don't appreciate that - when you're starting off temporarily with some "free things" because you're undercapitalized - for some things it won't matter and you can get away with it, whereas for other things it does matter and you'll probably regret it. You can't expect someone with no experience to be able to distinguish between those items: it's outside their experience.

For example, I wouldn't criticize any newbie with no money starting off temporarily with free hosting at byethost.com or freehostia.com: there's no great downside to that, at all, and it might even be reasonable, after making some money, to pay, upgrade and stay there. But to start off with a "free autoresponder" is a different category of decision altogether. It's almost unimaginable that it can really be a sensible thing to do. You and I know and can judge that, and say so: a complete beginner clearly can't.

Given all the talk in forums like this one (not to mention all the products for sale stressing the same things) about how you can "set up your business completely free", I think it's not surprising at all that so many beginning marketers are willing to make the mistake of depending entirely on free services.

Let's not forget that there are some genuinely good free services available, too.

Autoresponders just happen (for reasons you and I understand, but they don't, yet) not to be among that group.

With regards to this, I know this is an ignorant response, But what's to stop from opening 5 accounts and run them separately? Track IP? etc? Too shady?

Laws, ethics, morality, IP-tracking, other ways of identifying you (you'd need five different physical mailing addresses, too), and the fact that using a dreadfully bad autoresponder service five times over would perhaps be five times as silly as using it once, for all the reasons explained at such length and in such detail by the Warriors who regretted using it once, whose posts are in the threads linked to above?

More seriously, I think it would help you a lot to re-evaluate the role your list plays in your business. Do you want to build a real, asset-based business, or are you just "trying to create a job for yourself"? Websites are easily replaced - subscriber-lists not (nor are they easily imported anywhere else, even if you have a reliable back-up copy, as explained above): your list is your business's single most valuable and most important asset. It's the one about which you should take the most care, when deciding to whose safety, security and reliability to entrust it.

I promise I don't mean it rudely, but you're setting out in a field of endeavour in which a pretty small proportion of people ever achieve any success: if after reading this thread and the others linked to, inside it (you did do that, didn't you?), you're still thinking about using a free autoresponder for your business, then with apologies, I don't give too much for your overall chances. Nothing personal; nothing critical; just my opinion, but that's an opinion based on many years of observation of and discussions with both successful and unsuccessful "beginning marketers" - including seeing this exact conversation a few hundred times. Good luck!

mailchip and listwire are your saviour here.

But you need to shift out of this mentality.

Eventually you will soon realise, that online you have to spend money to make money.

That being the case, you need to shift it up a gear and invest in something like aweber or getresponse. These are our cup of tea, and responsible for making a truck load of money.

Simply untrue. It has a huge number of prohibited groups of people and activities listed in the TOS, as well as others in force which aren't even explained in the TOS. There speaks someone who has never read Mailchimp's terms of service, hasn't seen all the threads in which hundreds of Warriors warn aspiring internet marketers, here, not to use Mailchimp, and hasn't even read this very thread (see above!) before posting in it.

I've been using a free autoresponder Listwire for my non-profit blog, for 3 years and been satisfied with it. Delivery rate is good, easy interface, and good support forum for users. I have a paid autoresponder for my business websites, but still maintain Listwire for that non-profit one.

Just be prepare that Listwire have an ugly optin form (I modified them, so no problem), and the statistics are just weird. I've seen open rate numbers like 1600% LOL.... And make sure to tell your subscribers in their emails after they opt in, "don't click anything after you click the confirmation link".

Also try Cakemail.com, they have free autoresponder account for 2000 contacts and 12000 emails sending. It's a new service and I don't use them, but you might want to check.

Imnica Mail also provides a free autoresponder account for 1000 subscribers.

I highly recommend Getresponse although it is only free for the first month, but I think if you can try their service and become satisfied with the result then after a month you won’t mind paying a little subscription fee. If you prefer free however like what you’re asking, then you could try Mailchimp.

I rely on Mail Chimp to manage all my contacts, send out emails, as well as track my results. They provide plug-in for other programs.Besides Vertical Response also helps you send up to 4000 emails to around 1000 contacts every month at no cost.

GroupMail's Free Edition is can also be a good bulk email solution. If you are planning to reach around 500 customers through email marketing this software can be a good option. Besides it can easily import all your existing customers from various data sources.
Other tools that can help you reach many customers include Bigg Mass Mailer, e-Campaign, MailList Controller Free and Sendblaster Free Edition. Hope you found my information useful!!!

Free Mail services are not reliable and high chances that they will shut you down with slightest violation. Better to go for Aweber or Getresponse. Mailchimp is best in Free category.

I use MailChimp too. They're natural, intuitive, and up to 1,000 with all the features is like $8 a month, which is basically free, plus their customer service is the best ever!
