Is this the perfect email marketing letter? It grabbed ME!

Hello everyone,

I get tons of unsolicited mail...I don't open. But I opened THIS one and read right through it AND requested for more info. I don't know what it is. It didn't even address me, it just went straight to the point. And surprisingly it slipped through my spam filter which seems to catch EVERYTHING. What do you think of this letter? Oh, and look at the email subject.

EMAIL SUBJECT: I saw your info-product site

My name is Russell. I'm with KEY Difference. We've worked with Clickbank merchants, info-product owners and 7-figure "gurus" on their businesses.

We specialize in web development, next-gen (very slick) webpages, graphics, design, custom coding, custom wordpress, responsive/mobile ready development and all things "tech" for your info-product business.

We also handle video sales letters (VSL), video editing, creating professionally designed slides, content repurposing, content marketing, buzz marketing for product launches and more. I have a summary PDF. It's a presentation of our services and how they typically benefit info-product merchants (like you).

If you'd like me to send over a copy of our offers in this short PDF, please Reply to this email and I'll get it over to you within 24-48 hours.

Enjoy your Sunday.

    I don't think it's great at all.

Just reads like any other unsolicited email.

What surprised me is that I opened it AND read it. Typically, I simply wouldn't. And so I keep asking myself WHY did I open this mail? I'm SO hard to pitch. Honestly. Agreed, it is a typical SALES letter but there's something about it that MAKES it not so typical. Don't know.

I wouldn't have given it ten seconds of my time.

Not only is it not particularly well-written at all, but a significant proportion of its contents also appear to be based on fundamental misunderstandings about "what really matters" in internet marketing.

I would have "reported spam" before deleting it (assuming that I'm not an opted-in subscriber to the guy's mailing-list, which I wouldn't be for long anyway, if this is an example of what he sends out).

I certainly wouldn't want to do business with someone who needs to solicit clients by sending them emails with "I saw your info product site" in the title-line!

At the very least, I'd expect some specific reference to what my site is, there or in the body of them email, to try to make it look like something that isn't just "bulk, unsolicited email" (spam).

        Dreadful.

Not a great message at all, from my point of view.

But Im not exactly interested in those services.

Maybe you are, and thats probably why it caught your attention.

Somebody interested in making enough money to pay for their bills before the first might convert on an email that says nothing but this - "Work at home, Make enough money to pay your bills in the first week".

That wouldn't work with me, but someone who is interested in that, well maybe it would.

ALSO, i think .the curiosity used at the end of the email might have something to do with it as well.

Is this the perfect email marketing letter? Not by any stretch. And to make sure someone who doesn't know any better and comes across this doesn't think it is, here's why:

The email subject is a stab in the dark, the kind of thing that is caught by most spam filters (unless you're unlucky like the OP or you're subscribed to a particularly poor writer). It's hoping to land an Internet Marketer, ANY Internet Marketer; but completely leaves out the possibility that they're peddling anything other than how to e-books.

I LOL'd, at least they knew enough to put air quotes around "gurus".

So jack of all trades if they can just get some money from you, master of none. Even if we looked at this in the best possible light- as a form of "cold calling" a prospective client- the net they're casting is WAY to wide to match up with anything else they're writing. There's nothing else in this copy that would make you think this group is capable of doing anything (let alone being able to handle pretty much any kind of marketing out there).

Really the only thing that should be impressive about this to you is the fact that they beat your email spam filter, and you can thank them and their shot in the dark for letting you find (and hopefully fix) that weakness.

If I saw that email subject line I would have just spammed it right away. If I somehow opened it and read it, I would have wished I had spammed it right away instead of wasting 1 minute going over it.

Maybe you were just in some weird mood that somehow made you very susceptive to things like that. It happens

I agree, for 99% of people reading that it's very boring and wouldn't create an immediate emotional response.

However, for you it clearly did because maybe you're just interested in it or you read something about what's being said just beore you opened it.

The subject line is not awful. It kind of creates an appearance of being a personal email. A bit clumsy, but I've seen way worse. A better approach might have been "Question about something on your website." Or "question about [your site name or URL]." But still better than subject lines that make a bald faced pitch.

As for why the letter appealed to you, it's hard to say. The body itself is not strong copy. Usually when that kind of copy works it's simply that they got it in front of the right person at the right time. Even poor copy can sell to a red-hot buyer.

Regardless, this is why copywriters don't get overly wrapped up in what individual buyers do. They look at broader response from lists. That gives a better indication about the quality of the copy.

I agree with you, but I look on the bright side: it's getting easier for those of us who do something different and realistic, and understand that the underlying basis of successful email marketing is expectation-setting and continuity, to stand out from the crowd, and earn both our subscribers' trust and all the income we need.

If the Email did not address you personally then hell with it , don't waste time over it.
But if you are interested in it don't reply to it because they are just trying to know
wether the email is active or not to send more spam mails , instead create a new
dummy email at yahoo/google/rediffmail etc and reply from that dummy mail , if the other
person really wants to do business with you you can then shift him to your original mail latter.
but for me it looks like spam.

I respectfully but absolutely disagree with this...

Addressing people personally is so 1990's. Be honest, does it really make that big of a difference if someone uses your name or not??

I think whats more important is the rapport and knowing what the sender is all about.

Like they said above, It has gotten to the point where all that matters is if i know the sender or i subscribe to the blog. This way i know the quality of what will be in the email.

Thanks for all your comments, guys. I actually did not require this senders service at all. And yes, it sounds rather simplistic in content but I READ through it. I opened it. Now guess what I did with this email content? I remodeled the letter to sales-pitch four A&R executives on my list whom, previously, my emails to them had bounced immediately due to SPAM filters. And low and behold, this one DID NOT bounce! It's a shocker! Looks like the KISS formula (keep it simple stupid) really does work!

I've seen and written GREAT letters that didn't work at all. Weird.

Here's how I would engage you in a conversation and see if there's a possible fit to work together...

Subject: James here with a question about your blog post you made
        Body: "Hi Anthony,

I noticed you blog a bit and wondered if you have managed to monetize that effort?

        Thanks,

        James"

Based upon your reply I would gain some intel about you and your business and I would find out if you would be a good prospect for my services.

Very simple approach, all too often overlooked and easily dismissed for not being good enough to fly.

It doesn't just fly, it zooms past most of what I read.

If you ENGAGE prospective customers rather then blather about your key benefits this or that, truly inquire about what is going on in their world, actually see if there are issues or problems that your products/services can help solve, then you will have far more successful email campaigns.

Another approach is to inquire about a referral. "Who is the best person to ask about....". This is another great way to get your foot in the door if you are in the B2B space because if you attempt to engage the top honcho, the rest of your communication will likely trickle down thru the organization along with the reference from the top.

Very hard to say, most people write in different ways an what work for one does not necisarily work for another... Nothing is written in stone unfortunately.

This isn't hard at all & is quite simple to see success. If you genuinely engage people, they will reply. And if you immediately try to sell them your wares you get shutdown. This is the one thing why people say "cold email doesn't work" or "Expect 1% or less response rate".

This will get you 0%-1% response: "We can show you some amazing new system that will dramatically increase your businesses revenue."

This will likely get you > 25% response: "Hi, will your business do <some benefit> for customers? Thanks, james"
