Hey all,

I have been trying to clean up my email settings, etc to be more anti spam compliant and one of my main issues is the amount of bounced email addresses in my list.

I have been looking for a solution to have my list cleaned and validated but most online services are very expensive.

What do you all use for this?

Thanks,
Rich

    What autoresponder are you using?

I let Aweber sort things out for me... It tells me my spam score. And after so many days it'll delete the bounced addresses.

You email marketing provider should be able to do this as the OP says. They will also guide you with the do's and dont's of email list cleansing.

    I use Aweber myself too.
It has all the tools I need to check on the "health" of my list and easy to remove the ones that are not active.

Every month I delete unsubscribes, undeliverables and then anyone who's been on the list for more than 1 month and not opened an email in 30 days.

I send emails every 2 days so if someone hasn't opened in 30 days they probably aren't going to any time soon.

With Aweber it's all pretty easy to do. The unsubscribes and undeliverables have their own tabs in the manage subscriber section.

Then to get the no opens you set up a joined list before 'date range' + a secondary search of 'no opens' within your date of choice.

I deleted around 400 subscribers yesterday.

Yep... I deleted around 300 myself just a few days ago but I done 2 months rather than 30days.

Before deleting unopens, I always switch the 'from' email address and choose a different domain for the from address. You can also move the unopens to a different auto-responder and test for opens.

I would only do this with buyers lists and not freebie lists.

I remove my subscribers once every 2 months. Usually those who didn't open my emails for at least 3 months.

I am using mailchimp and they too have a tab where I can see how active they are on my list.

I do this too, at least once every 3 months.. Is it too long??

And, by the way, I'm using GetResponse..
The problem is I can't see the email addresses that bounced on my stats..
Is there any option to do that?? My bounce rate is pretty high, around 2-3%, assuming I don't have a big list yet

Getting rid of subscribers that have not opened for quite some time is one of the best ways to keep your list clean. As far as how far back to go, that's a personal preference... but 30 to 60 days would be a good start.

It also depends on the type of bounce it is. Hard bounces mean that the email either no longer exists or the domain is no longer up. Soft bounces can mean anything from temporary network issues, full inboxes and a email being in vacation mode. You still want to hold onto those soft bounces until you know they are not coming back.

But the hard bounces will eventually work their way out if you clean your list every 30 to 60 days, so no big deal.

I remove my subscribers when they did not open an email for 60 days too.. However I noticed some of you remove even after 30 days. Which do you guys prefer?

I remember cleaning my list for the first time about 18 months ago. This was on a list that was already 2+ years old at the time. My list was actually cut in half which was a huge shock at the time, but now I do it every couple of months and go back 60 days.

Incidentally, does anyone else have this issue: As soon as I have cleaned my list, my opens and clicks drop by about 15% for the next week or two and builds its way back up. I thought it was a coincidence but this happens every time. I know my settings are correct, I have been doing it as discussed in this thread for ages. The only thing I can think of is I also remove bounces too, which may turn out to be soft bounces rather than hard ones.

    Any thoughts?

There some gigs in fiver offering to clean your list. Just include some bogus emails and real ones to verify later if they did the job right. Also you can get a data of emails to run against your list to remove spam traps and such. The data you need is called spamtraps. I can provide you some, just pm me.
