My Open Rates Exploded With This Subject Line

Just thought I'd share this with the community.

So last week, I sent an email to my list (IM niche) and it got massive response/opens.

The subject line was "Get Off My List!".

And on the body it says:

...

Last week I got a complaint from on of my subscribers about sending too much email.

(...err...4 emails a week is too much now?)

Anyhoo,

Here's my honest and unfiltered reply:

"GET OFF MY LIST!!!"

Seriously,

On my very first email I sent you, I did say that I'll be sending you 'DAILY' emails.

Maybe in his little fairy world 'daily' means once a week ... I don't know... I guess something got lost in the translation.

Plus, I also mentioned that I'll be promoting stuff that I know you guys NEED every chance I get.

Now, I can't be more UPFRONT than that

....

I got the idea when a 7 month subscriber sent me an email complaining how often I send emails.

Aside from the opens I also got a TON (more like 28...for me that's a lot already. haha!) replies and some are kinda funny like:

"Take it easy on the little snowflake"

"He must've missed that bright, bluishly shiny unsubscribe button. lol!"

I felt like sharing because illiciting responses like these ... for me was a big win.

My guess is that the real reason wasn't too many emails. It was too many emails that particular subscriber didn't care about, so the emails became a nuisance rather than a welcome sight in the inbox.

Either way, the correct response is "get off the list."

Way too many people get overly concerned with unsubscribes. I'd rather that than keep emailing people who simply ignore me.

Hey. Sounds like almost anyone would open that kind of email though. Also saw one that said "I Quit" & I opened it just to see what was going on.

Talk about writing catchy Subject lines!

Asking or pointing out a problem in the subject line always works for me.

I am definitely trying this the next time I run a email marketing campaign John

I know that a email like that would at least make me curious. Granted, you can't use the same kind of thing over and over again, but if you can get a series of emails to send out that have emails like that mixed in a few times a month people should not get too blind to it.

That said, don't just go and make a bunch of emails like that. people with go blind to them and then you'll be scrambling to find something else to increase those clicks/opens.

A great way to increase your open rate is to ask a question in your email subject line.

The human brain doesn't like unanswered questions so the reader feels almost compelled to open the email to find the answer.

Of course if you trick or deceive the reader you might get ignored the next time so use the question trick sparingly. If you ask a question in the subject line, then give a really great answer or solution in the email it should result in a great response.

Think the email got a good response because the line was kind of negative. Seems like negative subject or subject lines which brings about bad news get a better open rate.

Sorry, I know this is not what you want to hear but honestly the original email you sent to that person is very insulting. And very unprofessional , imo.
( Note :Sorry if I interpret this incorrectly. Maybe you didn't actually send this email ?? ??)

Anyway, just remember Open Rates in of itself do not mean a damn thing.

That being said I will admit that it is interesting with the results. Not sure if it will equate with prosperity but engaging with your Subscribers like this is not a bad thing.

I'm reminded of what Ben Settles teaches, from the Bible - he doesn't mind cold subscribers - they'll either get interested and start buying, or they'll remove themselves from the list.

Nor does he mind those who buy... the 'hot' subscribers...

What everyone despises is the 'lukewarm' ones... those who don't open emails, don't buy, don't do anything at all. Those are the ones you'd wish would click the unsub button.

Sometimes, you just gotta 'fire' a customer.

On to subject lines: I got another one today that made me INSTANTLY unsubscribe... the title was: "Just sent you $100.00 USD with PayPal." (he was trying to sell me on building a list so I could get these emails all the time)

Now, the funny thing is ... it was mixed in with *REAL* Paypal notices, and they look like this:
"XXXXXXXXXXX just sent you $24.47 USD with PayPal."

    I've censored the name sending...

But any post that FORCES me to open - gets an instant unsubscribe.

I don't mind the ones that raise my curiosity... indeed, I'll add them to my bag of tricks... but don't force me to open an email... You've lost me forever - and I am a buyer!

On to the topic - This is something I have yet to implement - but it's on my 'to-do' list... to create another list for people EXACTLY as you describe - that complain about getting too many emails. It would be a list that mailed just once a week (probably Friday, I'm thinking...) ... and with Getresponse, you can allow people to switch themselves to that list by clicking a link.

So every 10th or 20th email, you could have a postscript asking people if they are bothered by the number of emails, and would they prefer a slower pace... along with a link to move them to the 'once a week' list.

You'll still make sales from them, and your weekly emails can be the 'best of the best' emails, or summaries, or something like that.

This would be the solution that keeps people on your list... after all, he did take the time to complain... perhaps looking for a solution like this is better than 'firing' the customer...

    Any thoughts?
