Yep, a lot of people give away ebooks. Reports and ebooks are probably the most popular.

You do need a server for your blog/landing page, if i understand your question. Most of the people I work with go ahead and sign up with Hostgator to start building their list. You can get a plan that will set you back around $100/year.

    Ebooks are very common freebies.

There are many options for delivering your ebook. You can host it on S3 and send subscribers a link in your first follow-up message. This is just one option.

A free Dropbox account with a shared folder is another option.

E books are GREAT traffic builders. BUT they need to be informative. To do that they have to be well researched and well written and that takes time and/or money.

Don't give away info that is poorly thought-out or poorly re-written PLR drivel.

    just my 2¢

Here are steps to maximize your list building and grow your list by giving away your freebie.

1.) Offer something of high perceived value.
2.) After they opt in send them their report.
3.) Make your report so good that they expect future emails from you.

If you do the following, you will have no problem building an audience of fans who buy your products and services.

If you have your own hosting account, then you can host (upload) your eBook on your own hosting account or if you don't have hosting, then you can use file hosting services like dropbox, onedrive etc and then you can upload your eBook and get the download link.

And you can create a html landing page and upload it to your hosting account or install wordpress and create a landing page. Alternatively, if you want to make it easy and fast without going through any technical stuff, you can use services like leadpage or 1minustesites.

In the email that subscribers gets once they have subscribed and confirmed (only if you have double optin), include the download link of your eBook.

E-Books are really a great and convenient way to build a List. Although videos have a higher optin rate.

I offer my E-book in the first intro follow up to my Sub. For me that is the best way to do it
