What is a good open rate and CTR rate for my niche?

Hi all,

I am in the diet and weight loss niche.

Ok, so I am around three weeks into this thing and I have now got a high converting opt in page. I am starting to build my list pretty well and I have a number of message queued up in my auto responder. I am also sending some manual emails so I am pretty much mailing my list everyday.

I am mailing content that I picked up from a PLR website and writing my own mails with the knowledge i have of the subject matter.

In terms of offers, I have been using CPA offers that are congruent with my offer of a free report. I have been looking for CPL offers, but haven't found too many that look good. Thus far I have been using Share a sale, Offer vault, Click Bank, Share a link affiliate x, warrior plus, JVZoo and a couple of smaller affiliate agencies.

My list is pretty small (150 currently). I have set up a spreadsheet to track my open rates etc. I am currently getting an open rate of around 10% and a CTR of around 3%. Obviously this means that i am not making sales currently (combination of small list and low open and click through rates).

Is this level of open rate and click through rate normal in this niche or should I be shooting for higher numbers?

Also - I am thinking that i should have my own custom e-mail address - I am currently sending from a hotmail.com address and wonder if this is affecting my open rate (i.e. if they are just going straight to the SPAM folder). I have been using my spam score checker on my autorepsonder, which is always 0 or 1 at the most.

Any advice is most welcome.

Thanks for your attention.

Kind regards,

Paul

They look pretty low to what I'm used to - but then, I'm not in your niche. I'm sure many people would kill to have as high a set of numbers as that - many 'Churn & Burners' would love your numbers, and most 'relationship' list builders would cry if they had numbers like that.

So much is going to depend on your methods of traffic, as well as your writing style.

You should have several email addresses (such a gmail account, a yahoo account, etc) and be a subscriber to your own list. This would have told you long ago.

But I'd be vastly surprised if all your emails were not being classified as spam. You should DEFINITELY be mailing with another email address. The best one would be your own personal website address.

I absolutely refuse to allow anything that is not a complete ZERO as far as spam scores... sometimes I have to change the words I'm using - but there's no reason to have anything more than a complete zero, in my mind. I used to have one email that was 2 point something, but I got rid of it.

So to summarize, change your email address pronto, and you'll probably see an increase. Keep in mind that your true open rate is probably higher (it's not perfectly judged) - the only accurate number is the click through rate.

    Hope this helps...

      Thanks very much Ben,

I am taking the relationship building approach so would really like higher numbers. I'll get my e-mail address changed over ASAP.

      Thanks again,

One thing I forgot to mention - which is surprising, because I mention it so often - is to get yourself on a bunch of lists in your niche - you can learn a lot by dissecting what others are doing.

Once those frogs have been turned into parts, don't just blindly copy what they do, assuming that "it must work." Often, it doesn't. You're simply seeing the result of someone else's blind faith in "it must work."

When you look at others' emails, do a gut check. Do they resonate with you? Why or why not?

Another reason to take what others send with a grain of salt...

Successful marketers are habitual testers, and you may be getting the losing end of a test. Copy a losing campaign, and it's likely to lose for you as well.

Beyond that, use another email besides hotmail, it's almost guaranteed to land you in the spam folders at major ISPs.

LOL!!! I often spot errors in other's campaigns - learning what others are doing wrong is just as important as learning what people do right...

But if you don't get on other people's lists - you're flying blind.

Testing your own stuff is an absolute necessity - but unless you happen to be a genius, and come up with, on your own, new ideas... it's best to spot them out in the wild, so to speak.

Thankyou for jumping in there - people might have gotten the wrong idea. Simply because some other list marketer is doing something ... doesn't make it worth emulating...
