Ist listbuilding worth it?

I mean for newbies..

You get a 30% opt-in rate for example..

Then there are only maybe 10% of people who will ever read your emails.

So on the first sight I am always losing money short-term then if I would just send clicks to a salespage?

How do you guys look at it?

I'm an affiliate marketer, myself, so I look at it like this: to earn anything worth talking about, through affiliate marketing, you need to do three things ...

    (i) Keep your potential customers returning to the sales page (because very, very few people buy anthing much at their first visit to a sales page!);

    (ii) Make increasing sales (ideally at progressively higher prices) to the same "captive audience" who regularly rely on and trust your recommendations - that's actually where most of the long-term income is, in affiliate marketing;

(iii) Establish the credibility and trust necessary to do both the above by earning's people respect as a provider of niche-related information.

Without building lists, of course, you can't do any of the three and you'd just be throwing away almost all the traffic you ever generate that doesn't buy anything immediately.

It would be just like trying to run the bath without putting the plug in the hole before opening the taps.

What kind of way to run a business would that be?

For most people, most of the time, it's just about as simple as that, overall.

These three threads are more informative ...

Is it a good idea to spend some time on building a mailing list ?

Your email list is a precious commodity - treat your list right and it can be gold. I was recently asked to review a course on Udemy titled 'How To Build A Responsive Email List'. It follows very closely what I do, and have done over the years. Being on Udemy it follows a very structured set of 12 'lectures'. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to build and maintain a list the right way.

List Building Is Worth it! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Your IM business is the List and your List is the Business. It is that simple. Yes you have to invest funds to build your asset. Every business off or on line have to do this. But this is an INVESTMENT in future income.

Unfortunately, without your list, you are just wasting time.

If its impossible to do there wouldnt be thousands of newbie solo ad and list building marketers daily busting their hump to make it work.

Yes it does require work and if you got a system in place where you have one time offers after a traffic optins, statistically and psychologically that is the best time to promote your low front end similiar affiliate products.

The whole point of list building is not to solely make money from those one time offers but merely break even or profit a little so the money invested, for example 100$ on a solo ad, you made 10 front end sales of 10$ products, you just made 100$ breaking even on your solo ad campaign.

And 100$ is about 300 or so clicks, and with a good squeeze page you increase your probability of 50% conversion optins, so you walked away with 150 subs for free .

Not to mention the follow ip sales at backend if you have that setup and relationship you create in the process for long term benefit of your business.

This is just one simple tactic of building your list, the sky is the limit, and your business stops only when you stop.

List building is all-important and all powerful. It is all about leverage! I'm releasing a cheap eBook on List Building soon, it'll deconstruct the essentials to building your list.

Not much is as powerful as a list. There are few things in IM as powerful as being placed directly in someones inbox. It's more than worth it, but it takes time!

Work out what people need, then rise up to meet that need and you'll OWN your niche.

    That really depends:

If you're starting out and you have no clue what you're doing which everybody goes through this phase anyway.. you won't get much out of it.. if you didn't get any good training on that or if you're just too lazy..

I'm personally in the dating niche and:

I can tell you that my EPC for someone who comes to my salesletter is about 10 to 20 times lower in comparison to those that sign up to my list...

If you have a good funnel your possibilities are also nearly limitless..

-Once you got that buyers list that's when you start making the big bucks in the backend...

-Also notice that if you just get a visitor to your site.. he is only viewing your site once...

-But when you have a list you can mail different offers all the time...

And if you don't spam your email list with BS every day than you can find different angles and get MUCH MUCH more people to click your emails then just 10%...

    I can tell you:

I've been doing IM full time for almost 5 years now.. and since I've started building a list with a high quality follow up and interest based segmentation I can pretty much spent how much I want on PPC ads.. once I've tested different squeezepages and different angles.

So if you put some effort into this and you know exactly how to engage that list and you know their exact problems and struggles it is pretty simple to get a huge ROI..

yes personally i would say it's worth it and it all depends on HOW you do it. you do it right and it will work for sure. one thing you also have to note it this all comes down to a number game if you get say 30% opt in rate and you only sent out link to say 100 people compared to someone who sent it to 10,000 people of course the latter would see significant profits.

you just need a good responder or SMTP and then you go for it. but it's not guaranteed you'll succeed the first round. it's always do - fail - learn - get better - repeat

It's vitally important to understand that when you are beginning a new venture, you'll invest IN your business in the form of time and money...returns will be slow at first. No matter what marketing business you've undertaken, it's always the funnel effect. Keep pouring prospects into the funnel, and in time the success spills out the other side. List building is the key to repeat customers and referral sales. The biggest issue I find with new internet marketers (as well as direct salespeople) is they have trouble building solid lists and potential customers simply because their sales pitch makes outrageous claims. As Alexa mentioned - you must establish trust above all, and be a transparent REAL person. So, YES, list building is worth it, and with patience and honesty, your business will be successful.

I once made $16,000 in one weekend with a list of less than 600 by offering extreme and uncommon value. If you get the right people to join you, you treat them with respect, reach out and help them like you love them - they will respond.

Remember, people love buying but they hate being sold to. Offer amazing value - really extend yourself. Give them as much free (useful) content as you possibly can without pushing affiliate links or irrelevant garbage to them they will learn to like and trust you and they will support you.

People (in my experience) are hanging out to trust people. Become one of those rare people who actually care and they will throw money at you with joy and gratitude. But push solo ads or other rubbish to them and they will hate you with a passion, they will remember how much they hate you for a very long time and you'll make diddly squat.

Value, value, value! Give them value and they will value you and the world will be your playground. Remember, after freedom the number two priority for people is to hang out with other cool people. Be cool or stay broke...it's your choice.

    Definitely worth it.

You just have to keep taking action and work on your capture page so you can turn the 30% to 50% (or more), lower your costs and then provide value instead of just trying to sell to your list.

But if you're going to send someone to an offer, affiliate or anything else, you might just as well build yourself a list.

Spend some time on this and you'll have a valuable asset in your possession.

all depends on how you build your funnel - you need to have a sales page that converts at 5% on a $17 product with one up-sell converting at 20% to make the money back on your traffic then it doesn't matter how much money you spend building your list - then once your list is big enough you can sell solo ads!

I don't understand where this idea comes from (not your own experience, I hope??). Sorry, but it's very mistaken, anyway: I run each of my lists under an otherwise totally unknown pen-name (specific to each niche), and I have some very high open-rates.

List building quite frankly is the ONLY reason I have had ANY success at all.

    Listbuilding allows me to:

    1) Promote my tiny little products

    2) Promote my social media (45,000+ Google Plus Visitors, 10K+ Twitter Follows)

    3) Promote my blog posts (Okay, so I haven't blogged in over a month, but I still get traffic)

    4) Promote affiliate stuff

    Basically...

If you're a "small" marketer... YOU NEED to build an email list.

Just my honest and humble $.02, and I wish you the best.

List building is worth but you have to learn how to interact with your subscribers. First you have to test your landing pages to see which ones bring in the most subscribers, then you have to know which headlines catch their attention and after that what type of email create the click through.

The best way to start off learning how to create good emails is subscribing to a good amount ( 15 or more) of the top email marketers and solo ad vendors. You will start getting emails from them and when you do pay attention to the headlines used, which ones catch your attention and make you click. Then look at what emails make you click the link once inside. This give you a good idea of what type of emails to write that would catch your subscribers attention.

True. You can look at thing two ways: as a customer, and as a marketer. When you are in the customer-state you look for what you can get from the offer, while when you are in the marketer-state, you look for what you can get from the content, the methods, the little tricks. It's a very profitable thing when you learn to use the marketer mindset.

The same is true for WSOs for example. You can read them to learn the exact method and implement it step-by-step (being in the customer-state), or you can analyze them, look for the methods and how you can modify them, combine with other methods, perfect them and make them your own.

I view listing building very much like a mutual fund; it is an asset that you build over time.

You can build a list using e-mail, social media, a forum, you can collect names, email addresses, phone numbers (think text messaging marketing), addresses, etc.

List building also depends on your business model on how you plan to monetize your traffic. Some models are better suited for list building.

When I started my very first list, collecting single opt-in e-mail addresses, I was putting in about $400 a month on paid advertising. I was getting anywhere from 5 to 12 subscribers a day to my newsletter which sent out a series of 7 educational e-mails during the first week (one per day) and then twice per week after that for 3 months and then once per week for the rest of the year (I sold my own ebook as a loss leader and then marketed 20 affiliate programs).

During my first month I put in $400 in paid advertising and made $250. That's a $150 loss right?

Well, only IF I had decided to quit at that point, but I kept on going.

As the automated e-mails kept going out to my slowly growing list I continued to make sales on my own ebook, but also on the affiliate programs that I marketed. Some of them paid $20 a sale, another paid $97 a sale, another $45 a sale, etc.

So during month 2 I still put about $400 in paid advertising and made $500. I'm still in the hole and haven't made a profit yet.

But my list kept growing at 5 to 12 opt-in subscribers per day. But I kept on going.

So during month number 3 I still put in about $400 in paid advertising and I made $878 because more people were buying while my list was growing. At some point, your list begins to pay for itself and them some.

Now that was well over ten years ago and millions of e-mails later, I have since refined the process after a lot of testing. But you can see the power of creating your own contact database, which many still refer to as a "list".

In some of my marketing funnels my list accounts for as much as 80 to 99% of my total profits, depending on what model I'm running.

So if you have a business model where list building makes sense, don't let myopia cloud your vision. Invest in a good autoresponder or self-host, STUDY list building from people who can prove to you they know what they are talking about, and don't be afraid to start up a campaign.

Some of the best advice I can give you is to make sure you come up with a comprehensive product / service marketing strategy. Don't get stuck only marketing ONE product or service (unless it's a very high ticket item) because you want to diversify your income and your risk and you want to compound your income; one the best ways to do that is continue to promote QUALITY products and service that caters to your target audience.

The only people who this 'statistic' applies to are spammers who think that someone is their property simply because they signed up to get that freebie. There is no automatic connection with someone who came to your site for a freebie. And, this is one reason I'm not a huge fan of giving away free ebooks as it attracts the freebie collectors or worse, other site owners who steal your free content for their own sites. I'm more in favor of offering solid info/tips/report series (spread out over days/weeks/months) that inform and educate the person reading the emails. If that person doesn't have reason to open the email to learn more, then of course they won't. If that's true in your situation, then you need to refine who you are targeting to sign up to your list and your actual email content.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9556098].message }}
  • If you get like 1% conversions on a $50 product from a list of 100 people, thats $50. And to build up a list of 100 costs less than $50, so you make profit.

Plus, that list stays with you. It can be worth it, however it can also be not worth it. Depends on how much you get leads for.

I say even if you only break even its worth it, as you have the list.

Building a list is essential. Your list will become one of the most valuable assets of your business. Done right you will be able to build a relationship with your customers/subscribers and make money on demand.

By that I do not mean endless blatant selling through email after email day after day. I mean the occasional useful email which your customers/subscribers may respond to and find helpful. For example if you have say a clothes shop then emailing about a sale, a special promotion, a discount voucher etc.

List building will mean different things to different people of course - this is simply my opinion in a couple of sentences.

List building is definitely worth it. If you just send traffic to your sales page, and then the traffic stops... how do you make more money? You have to order more traffic. Which means if leading someone straight to your sales page doesn't convert well... then you will make a little bit of money.

But imagine amassing a list of 20,000 people on your email list. You'd get sales everyday - new traffic or not. You can't jump through loopholes with your email marketing. Just follow the simple principles, and go out and enjoy your life while you make money. Don't re-invent a wheel that's already working well.

    Hi,

One way or another......YOU have to GET your feet wet with list building.

You can listen to every angle, watch every strategy video going, listen
to everyone's views until you're blue in the face.

But until you go out there, do your research, testing and uncover your own
    results....

...You'll be speculating all the way to the bank that is EMPTY of incomes.

You see what the GURU'S don't tell you is that THEY spent a TON of time,
money and blood, sweat and tears to get their list building machines to work
    for them.

Then they tell you that it is all push button, 5 minutes squeeze page and cash
    time.

So get down and dirty with list building.

Throw some paid traffic at your set up.

    TEST and measure your results.

Then see where you can improve.

    The numbers never LIE.

They (the numbers) will tell you where the money is being spent and you can
then ditch the rest and laser focus on what produces positive results.

    All the best,

    Gavin

Yes, building a list is worth it. I regretted not building a list when I started out, but now I started seeing a little result.

Keep on keeping on and list building may be your best investment ever.

When done right, list building can be be very much worth it.

You have to look at email marketing as more like "you making an recommendation to friend" and less like "you shaking your list down for their money"

When you send an email, you are sending to the masses which makes it very easy to forget that the email is being read individually.

Treat your list like an individual.

And be patient, don't shove offers down their throat, create the relationship.

People buy from whom they can trust.

    Cheers!

Building a list should be your #1 Focus since day one! You're list is your most valuable asset. In order to build your list your must help your audience and recommend products that help them, you must gain their trust. Just think : having a list of subscribers that trust your recommendations because they know you can help them is like having a licence to print money. Just think : if you spend all your time sending traffic to affiliate offers and you don't collect that traffic are you really building your own long term asset or somebody elses? What if you are doing SEO marketing or some other form of marketing and you lose all your traffic, than where is your business? With having a list you can email at anytime you have the power to broadcast messages to all of your list and turn a profit on demand. Building a list is very important when building a business online and should be a #1 priority.
