My all time favorite and most memorable is "The One-Minute Manager" -Ph.D. Kenneth Blanchard. The rest in no particular order. "See You at the Top" - Zig Ziglar. "Encyclopedia of Ancient and Forbidden Knowledge" by Zolar. "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", Robert Kiyosaki. "How to Win Friends & Influence People", Dale Carnegie.
"One-Minute" was very instrumental in helping me to work with others. And I still use it even after reading it 25+ years ago. |

Good question. I've answered it on this forum before (and on my now defunct blog) but I want to answer it again. I've changed my mind since then anyway.
Five books that changed my life, inspired me, etc.:
1) http://www.amazon.com/Orwell-Reader-Fiction-Essays-Reportage/dp/0156701766">The Orwell Reader: Fiction, Essays, and Reportage. I first read this while staying at the Hotel Caribe in Santiago, Chile. I borrowed it from a friendly American... and I remember staying up all night, frantically reading it, because I was afraid I'd have to return it the next day.
I was particularly affected by Down and Out in Paris and London and his essay, "Politics and the English Language". You can read both of them for free online. Just google them.
Our conversations spawned by this and other books eventually led me to return to University to study liberal arts (Religious Studies, Philosophy, Literature, etc.) I may be traditionally unemployable now, but I'm still glad I got my degree.
2) While going to school, I got interested in investing and eventually found http://www.harrybrowne.org/">Harry Browne, the investment advisor and radio host. I read most of his essays, several of his books, and listened to all of his archived radio shows.
Eventually I ordered his libertarian classic, http://www.trendsaction.com/category.php?category=Harry+Browne&ulaCartSID=ssZVAWgAqFLaGRRRbWmMCcCxd1166563242">How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World. This book killed off any sense of entitlement I had left. I now understood that to get rich/be happy/etc, I had to get out in the marketplace and satisfy consumer demand. In other words, I had to find something people wanted and give it to them at a fair price.
I still read this book at least once a year. You can listen to Harry Browne discuss his book ftp://radio.harrybrowne.org/Freedom%20in%20an%20Unfree%20World%20-%20Las%20Vegas,%2002-05-04.mp3">here (MP3 file). He covers the basics in this recording. Start with this, and buy his book if his ideas pique your interest.
3) Harry Browne's stuff led me to other libertarian blogs/sites, like http://www.lewrockwell.com/">Lew Rockwell's site, where I found Gary North. He wrote several essays about marketing and business... and those essays fascinated me.
I can remember reading them over and over again, and also reading his recommended reading, including... Claude Hopkins' Scientific Advertising.
You can read Hopkins' book for free; just google it. I especially like Gary North's annotated version, available at his http://www.garynorth.com/">site as a free advertising course.
4) North's and Hopkins' stuff got me interested in copywriting. I started reading everything I could about it and found lots of interesting folk, including Michael Masterson, John Forde, Michel Fortin, etc.
My 4th "book" is actually a website: the back issues of Gary Halbert's newsletter. Check them out at his http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/">The Gary Halbert Letter website. Fascinating stuff, well worth studying. They took my marketing knowledge to the next level.
Halbert shamed me into action with his http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/Newsletters/aslz_winners_losers.htm"> players vs spectators philosophy. Other greats who harp on this are http://www.robertringer.com/">Robert Ringer and http://www.jamesbrausch.com/">James Brausch. I'm still not the "player" I want to be, but I'm working at it.
5) Finally, I found, read, and studied Robert Cialdini's great book, http://www.amazon.com/influence-Psychology-Persuasion-Business-Essentials/dp/006124189X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-4343678-4773533?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176113907&sr=1-1">Influence. This book is one of the most fascinating I've ever read. You have to read this book even if you're not a marketer. In fact, tell your whole family to read it.
This book can save your life. It's really that important. I actually photocopied a few pages out of this book, and mailed them to my mom. That's how seriously I took some of his advice.
Click on the link above, and read the first few pages. You'll see what I mean. And, if you're not going to read the book, at least read this http://www.awaionline.com/thegoldenthread/2003/tgt_77.html">summary of Cialdini's work by John Forde. It covers the marketing side of things. That's not enough though. Read the whole thing. Borrow it from the library if you're broke. I'm serious. Really.
Well, that's it... five great books (sort of). Everyone go out and read them right now. You're crazy if you don't.
Curt. |

Hi ZILLIONAIRE, Thanks for your comment.
You are right, there are many books that have helped us in one way or other to get us to where we are today, but usually there are a few that have impacted our lives the most, or we would like to keep them by our side to read them over and over again.

Hi WhatamanJackson, Great!!!! "The One-Minute Manager" was the very first management/motivitional book that I read when I left school starting working. That changed my perspective of human relationship. Subsequently, I read the rest of the "One Minute...." book but still found the OMM the best.
I have read the rest you listed except "Encyclopedia of Ancient and Forbidden Knowledge" by Zolar. Hm... will find a copy to read.
Thanks a lot for your sharing.

Everything I've read/listened to by Jay Abraham has been great. How is this book? Hmm, I should probably just order it and be done with it. It's MUCH cheaper than most of his stuff.
BTW, if you're gonna buy Abraham stuff, try http://www.hardtofindseminars.com/JayAbraham.htm">Michael Senoff's site first. You may save yourself a bundle. I've never ordered any Abraham stuff from him, but he seems trustworthy.

Hey Keith,
Screw It Let's Do It is by Richard Branson of Virgin fame, Special Forces Survival Guide was by Army Special Forces. It taught me how to look past things as they are and imagine what other beneficial uses it can be used for, a lot more doors are opened when you don't limit your thinking to the obvious and accepted use. |

Hi everyone, I can't name 5 of them but one of my favorite is "The Soul Of Money" by Lynn Twist (www.soulofmoney.org). She explains how money is compared to water flowing. Some have a creak, some have the Niagara Falls... but all money is simply a form of energy that needs to be shared and circulated. |

Another great topic..love it!
Wow, how to pick just 5??? Ok, I can't so I won't!
The Way of the Peaceful Warrior Rich Dad, Poor Dad Think and Grow Rich The E-Myth 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (in the process of reading) Hypnotic Writing by Joe Vitale The Alchemist
And I've got a ton more sitting on my reading chair right now by Bob Bly, more Joe Vitale, Bill Harris, Les Brown, Robert Allen, Dan Kennedy and John Sarnow M.D. I'll be picking up James Ray's Science of Success in the next few days as well.
I need to get a speed reading course so I can read much more in a shorter amount of time!! |

Wow, another REALLY helpful thread here.
I agree it's very hard to limit it down to just 5, but for me they would be...
1. "Peace Is Every Step" by Thich Nhat Hanh. My favorite book of all time, period.
2. "Dr Robert Anthony's Advanced Formula For Total Success" by Robert Anthony. Amazingly powerful and helpful book! Very hard to overstate it.
3. "Optimal Thinking" by Rosalene Glickman. What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? An all time great, obviously.
4. "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I don't think anything more needs to be said about this one. If you haven't read it yet, MAN!
5. "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. The chapter on putting first things first is worth more than the price of the book by itself, WAY more. |
