Actually I was thinking that 'Microhooters' would get a lot more mileage in the marketing department. :-))

| They've been in these talks in the past. I hope they go with the strategic partnership route instead of merging. A merger would likely mean the end of Yahoo as a brand, and that's just a shame. |

I am wondering though... as far as brand value from the online prospective only isn't Yahoo more valuable than MSN?
I would think that part of the aquisition would be because of the value of the brand and MS would never change the Yahoo brand name as long as that value is there...
That would be a bigger disaster than "New Coke" |

If Microsoft acquires Yahoo, I highly doubt MS would change its name. I'm not sure why people are assuming they would. They've acquired many companies over the years and still have the same name.
Did Google change its name when it bought YouTube? |

Why would they change their name, it would be stupid...
If they we're gonna use a new name, then they wouldn't buy them out in the 1st place. They have the power & money to duplicate Yahoo...
MS is pretty much buying the Yahoo! Brand |

Hey, that's just what my friends at Yahoo are saying. I imagine the rebranding would be from Microsoft working so hard to establish MSN as the top internet brand. It wouldn't be immediate, but I could see it happening slowly over the years.
And if they had the money to duplicate Yahoo, they would have done it already. Haven't you noticed how bad MSN sucks? |

I don't think anyone is assuming anything here except for you assuming that others are assuming. |

yes, exactly like with Overture right? no name change.
what I'm more worried about is the CHAT PROGRAMS.
both are quite popular and they compete, maybe they will make them compatible. |

basically if I think good about it, I think there will be no name change, because with all the haters noone wants to associate with Microsoft.
p.s. tim you need a spell check it's Microhoo with an "e" at the end. |

| Plenty of people want to be associated with Microsoft. And if MS OWNS Yahoo, well then they don't really have a choice, do they? |

So what if they buy Yahoo? What would be the big difference. I dont think anyone can beat the power of google's search engine. Their searches are much better than microsoft and Yahoo and the only way Microsoft could compete is if they made theres better. Even then I think it would be impossible. Yahoo doesnt even offer PPC to publishers unless they go through weeks of review to find out they were rejected and MSN doesnt offer anything good either so that should be the first thing they change before they go off wasting money on buying out another search engine.
I had a feeling that the reason Bill Gates decided to retire was because he was afraid of Google...but who isn't. Did you people see that video about how Google will control the world as they are successfully capturing the information of it all in their databases?
Thanks,

The Linux community is rather small compared to the Windows community. Heck, even compared to the Mac community! Think end-user, not developer. My mom, for instance, would have no idea what Linux is. Not a shot against Linux (I love Ubuntu), just the facts.
The same standard can be applied to most chief executives. They see one of the top grossing companies in the world that doesn't produce pharmaceuticals and one that grosses less. It makes perfect sense to them to rebrand everything under one name since they'll be working in the same space, so why not go with the more powerful name? "There can be only one!" |

this is the worst possible thing i could see in the morning.
wanna know why? cause when yahoo launched their new poker website i decided i was going to buy 10k in stocks knowing that now with their new cash cow things could only really look good in the future.
so i go to buy 10k in stocks and my bank refuses to co-operate they say they are doing an investigation and want to wait until next week to release my funds... so i go okay np the stock shouldnt go up for a while then i log and see yahoo merger and the stock jumps 5 bucks..
so sick there goes 4k profit already |

I think it's the only way Mickey$loth will be able to save themselves.
Otherwise, the writing is pretty much on the wall.
It seems like only yesterday that Microsoft was an unstoppable giant...

I agree and in fact this would be a bad decision, IMO. Yahoo is a brand and why would you want to destroy it? When AOL bought out Netscape, Netscape kept its name.

I agree that if the buyout occurs, the Yahoo brand will stay. It doesn't make sense to change the name when there is so much name recognition associated with your brand.

Microsoft-Yahoo better as partners, not one (Reuters)!
So Microsoft is not going to take over Yahoo but both are going to have cooperation or JV to fight to GOOOOOOOOOOOGLE!
