IPage says "oh here's why, It didn't register"

I registered a new ".com" website domain thru IPAGE in Dec. 2014 I spoke with a girl about setting it up as a WP site, She was going to help me but I wasn't ready to start yet. Long story, short I went to set it up yesterday and things were not right so I went to the website and there was a guy on my site selling a IM system!

I called IPAGE and the guy said that the site was registered through Go Daddy. Not them. I told him that I was looking at a paypal receipt that said I paid for it in Dec. then he looked it up and said yes you did. He then said oh I see what happened it never registered! I Said so what does that mean? I'm just screwed? He said yeah basically. He said Go Daddy registered it in April.

I told him that it took a long time, and a lot of thinking of names to find one I liked and was available. I know I can't get the domain back but it seems IPAGE should not get away with " We were having some problems with our system back then". I also have an email from them with my logon info.
I am 60 yrs old and a newbie to this internet business. I do struggle with what most people think is simple I guess. But I have bought domains before and never had any problem. Maybe I didn't do something I was supposed to? Any imput would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

Cheers
Tom

I believe you did what everybody does: Immediately you pay for a domain name and it is confirmed; it is supposed to belong to you. Ipage had to refund your money. But I believe they supposed to pay some penalty fine, which I don't know. That is why I normally separate my hosting from my domain name- I buy from different vendors. Maybe more experienced marketers here will have more ideas. Sorry about what happened, it is so annoying.

Thank You Kendido, for your reply. The guy said I could probably get a refund but he wasn't sure since it has been almost 6 months. I am sure I could though. It is just I need the site so it is very disappointing to have to go through the whole new name thing again. You are right very annoying!

      Cheers,
      Tom

Never buy domains from a host. iPagei s NOT an accredited register, and is the middleman. Go directly to a registrar yourself.

    Namecheap is best.

Thank You kpmedia for your reply. I guess I got schooled on that one. I will have to make sure I do that . Thank you for the recommendation.

I am sorry to hear that this happened to you. In your case since the domain was not registered thru IPage then they should refund the money if it was not yet refunded automatically. Have you checked your account if there were any refunds from IPage? Based from experience with other registrars and/or resellers when a transaction does not go thru a auto refund is done.

Now in the event that no automatic refund was made, it is their responsibility to process a manual refund even if months has already passed since you are entitled to the domain name for a year since you in effect paid for it for an entire year. Since you were not able to make use of it and the domain was registered elsewhere it is IPage's responsibility to bear the brunt. Is it in US? Maybe you can contact BBB for assistance.
