Was just offered $350 for this domain.... Sell or hold?

So I have owned the domain whyg.com for many years, Out of the blue I get an offer a couple of weeks ago for $150 (which I never responded to), then Yesterday, same guy offers $350. The various valuation sites seem to value it between 850 and 1500, but I have no idea how accurate those sites are.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

the free appraisal sites arent very accurate unless there has been a previously reported sale for the same name. I would say that the $350 offer is fair but is on the lower end of the market value for such 4 character domains.

The domain valuation tools means nothing . It is nowhere close to worth 850-1000$

A domain name is worth what someone will pay for it. I have seen 4 character domains similar to this sell in the past for $3000, but those sales are very rare and are typically purchased by companies which are looking to re-brand their online business with an acronym. I took a moment to search acronymattic.com to see how many abbreviations may relate to your name whyg.com, it returned only 1 result. Having said that, i would say the likelihood of receiving $xxxx for this domain is low. If you are able to, contact the potential buyer and get more info about who he/she is and why they want the name. Is likely a domain trader looking to buy the name for $350 and resell for $450-$550. If it is a business looking to acquire the name, you could probably get a bit more out of them. Tell them you were planning to develop the name and would need a more educated offer from them if you were to sell.

Those valuation sites are ALWAYS wrong, so do not use them to determine the value of your domain.

There's no website hosted on your domain, so the domain is not worth much at all. It's only worth whatever someone's willing to pay for it. So the $350 is a handsome offer, especially since it's not a premium domain. Premium domains would be like Pizza.com, which are obviously worth more than yourwebsitehereisawesome.com just on face value alone.

Domains that have websites on them are valued most reliably by their income multiples...which is a product of the website's yearly profit compounded over said multiple.

So I'd advise you to take the offer, unless you have other plans for it.

It really depends on how much it's value holds to you.. Do you need it? If not, I'd say sell it.

Maybe the guy has a website he wants to create, but for some reason need that domain name.

I'd say put it on Flippa and send him a link to your auction and says he can bid on it or buy it through the "Buy it now" price. So you don't get scammed.

    Just for safety measures.

    That's my 2 cents..

    Hope that helps

    Take care, Adam

I received the same set of emails - same amounts - for two 4 letter domains I have owned for some time now - not to reveal his entire email address (which is all the contact info he has provided thus far) but the first part of his email is "dino" @ - let me know if yours is from the same name?

Personally, I have filed both emails away until next year - maybe there will be a couple more upticks until then.

    1. Never use an automated appraisal.

    2. LLLL .coms are going up in value.

    3. $350 seems like a reasonable reseller offer for this domain. As with any domain sales, you can get more money from an end-user but how long will you wait.

    My advice, Hold it.

4 letter domain names are going up each day that's why you're getting contacted.
Don't sell unless you need the money or get a better offer.

That's NOT true at all! kfgv.com or the OP's whyg.com has ZERO value even though it has 4 letters. The 4 letters is really irrelevant! The only way a 4 letter domain would be worth anything on its face value would be a word...like play.com or cars.com

The amount of straight up BS on this forum is completely unnerving.

The value of 4l.com have been going up lately (any combination). The demand at the moment is high. Of course there are some more valuable than others

    Easy calculation

The domain itself will cost you 2-5$ a year.
So even when you wait 10 years to sell it, it will cost you just 50$
If you not sold it after 10 years, you have lost 350$ plus 50$, so your risk is 400$
But also you will always be able to sell it for a minimum of 100$.

Now your risk has become 300$ tops

Set a goal price for your website, let’s say 1500$

Now is is calculating the odds, if you think that you have a 20% chance you will sell it in the next 10 years for 1.500$, then keep it and wait.
If you think nobody will buy it, or the chance is lower than 20%, sell it now.

If they are saleable domains, you can list them on a Marketplace or make a private sale

Sites where you can list your domains for sale: Flippa.com, GoDaddy.com, NamePros.com, FreeMarket.com, Sedo.com, etc

Look for potential buyers to let them know you have those domains for sale

People only buy domains for 2 reasons, backlink profiles and/or EMD (exact match domain) names.

So, you tell us, which one is it?

If it's an awesome backlink profile with a lot of followed authority links it could be worth 100s/1000s.

Unless I've missed it, no one in this thread has mentioned the Chinese market for 4-letter domain names. Check out LLLLsales.com to see some of the reported sale prices.

For the Chinese premium LLLL .coms they want no a, e, i, o, u or v. Google "chinese 4-letter domain names" for more info.

I just sold a 4-consonant domain name on Sedo and am awaiting payment. If it turns out to be a legit sale and the funds come through I will come back to let you know how much it sold for.

The Chinese market also has interest in all-numeric domains. I have a 5-digit .com (all numeric) and someone in China has offered me $1300 for it. Unfortunately, I have used that domain for email for years and would have to spend a lot of time changing the email in a multitude of accounts so it is probably too time consuming to be worth it.

As all 4-letter dot coms have sold out I would vote for holding on to your 4-letter domains. I only decided to sell mine because I have no use for the domain and it "might* pay for a few months' rent through the winter.

BTW I am not sure I can recommend Sedo.com yet. You can find some alarming stories about non-paying buyers in Google. Not sure what the protections are for sellers. Hope I don't have to find out.

I did have some fun playing around with estibot.com, siteprice.com and siteprice.org. "For entertainment purposes only." It's almost as if the valuations are randomly selected.

My advice is don't sell yet!

I have been getting emails almost every day for one of my 4 letter domains, and I believe there may be none left to register, so there is some panic buying going on. There is a ton of them for sale on godaddy aution and have been getting a lot of bids - go and look at "Most Active"

Take the money and run. Even tho it is a 4 letter domain the search is really poor on searchengines. Better said, it has absolutely zero value with less than 10 searches per month. The moment you have something over 100 or 1000 then you could ask good money.

4 letter domains are hard to come by and this domain is probably perfect for the guy offering the money. It is probably the initials of his product or company. Since he was willing to go $350, I most likely would double that and tell him that I am considering an offer for $650 at present and would let it go at $700 if he is interested.

      Not necessarily.

According to DotCN, "The lowest price of Chinese premium LLLL.com (without a,e,i,o,u,V) is about $300USD now." He is probably in the right ballpark... and in recent times, I'm seeing higher sales numbers for short .COMs all across the board. Here's a few current examples from GoDaddy Auction:
      • ZJGS.com is currently at $1,580 with 15 bids.
      • QSBB.com is currently at $,1525 with 13 bids.
      • WSZX.com is currently at $830 with 31 bids.

Don't sell it, Ask at least $5000.- for it. 4 letter domains will become really expensive the next year or the year after. Besides that, maybe the company name is like that so no dont sell it for such a low price. If they want it, they pay for it anyway. Even if it's 10.000

Hold or sell, it's ultimately your choice. Just my two cents worth of opinion, i would hold it if i were you.

Using acronymfinder.com, WHYG stand for What have you got? I will definitely buy it if i were setting up a marketplace kind of website.

Just recently bamz.com sold for $1,002 on flippa. AcronymFinder only returns 2 definition for bamz, and that is 1) Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo 2) Brad, Angelina, Maddox and Zahara.

whyg.com has more broader market appeal compared to bamz.com. But then again, its just an opinion.

Keep in mind these two things:

    1. People who are not in the domaining industry do not understand the aftermarket and will criticize it. However, it is anyone's right to dislike the industry.

    2. You have to follow the domain market on a daily basis because values can change from day to day. When this thread first started, values of Chinese Chips were not as high. Check today's market value.
