How important is having a website?

I keep hearing "A domain name for $10.00 and web hosting for $10.00 per month" on this forum.
Why is it important to have a site?
Is it possible to do this without owning a website?
And how does that even work?
What I know now is that web pages are written in HTML and that is viewed through Firefox.
But having an html file on my computer isn't enough. Can't be viewed over the web and doesn't have name.
How even get it hosted, and on a server, and with a name, and if it's on a server how edit it? How does that process even happen? Please explain.

Do we even need a site? couldn't use a free site like yolasite or everyone's favorite wordpress? Or just link directly to the offer?

And if I do need a webpage, how do I get that $10+$10 per month deal? What are the options?

Visibility - Increasing visibility is one major factor that makes having a website important. Even if people have heard about your company, they may want to carry out research online first, before leaving the house. Provide a map and directions to your company's shops or offices on your website so that visitors are less likely to have trouble finding the place.

Low-Cost Advertising - The Web has a far wider reach than any other form of advertising. While it takes time to build up enough traffic to your website to make a worthwhile impact on your company's marketing campaign, it costs next to nothing to do so. Your website will be the center of your company's online presence; through it, you advertise your business around the Web on social networking sites.

Accessibility - A website is online and accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Because of this, your customers and potential customers can visit your site for support or information about new and upcoming products and services whenever it is convenient for them.

Sales - Your website can sell products at any time. Potential customers are not restricted to business hours. Instead, they can go online and purchase products whenever they want. A website with an online shop can provide a dramatic boost in sales.

If you sell fish and chips in a have a physical business, you need a shop of some kind in which to do it. If you don't have it, you would have to walk the streets with cooked food and pray for sales before the food goes cold.

If you have any online business and you're serious about it, then you NEED A HOSTED WEBSITE. That site is your "online shop." With no site, you restrict what you can do and also lots of people look for a site and if you don't have it, your credibility drops instantly.

You can use WordPress.com or blogger.com or Wix and design and create your own site and you'll only need to buy your domain name BUT you lose some of that professional look due to the restrictions imposed by these FREE sites.

    I hope that makes sense.

Having a website is something that is definitely important and can be the life blood of any business. Without one you will find it incredibly difficult to connect with your intended audience and you will be missing out on a lot of potential customers, particularly now that most people use the web.Think of it as your own piece of real estate that you own online. You can advertise what you want there, it gives great exposure to whatever it is you are trying to promote and is a great way for people to get to know your business, purchase your products, contact you or even leave invaluable feedback.

Do not underestimate how important having a website is especially nowadays more than ever....

I hope you make the right decision

Having a website is what allows you to control your business. You can (and should) use social networks, Web 2.0, youtube etc. But the center of your business should be your own website.

To show your offer on the Internet you need hosting & domain, hosting means place where your website files are stored and domain is the name the people type in the web browser.

Try hostgator offer, I am using them since many years, a biggest domain registrar is godaddy, they offer hosting as well but I preffer hostgator, never had any problems with them, they have great support.

If someone asks me if starting a web development business is right for them, I say “Yes!” if they’re willing to do the work. Here are 15 reasons why:
    1. You Can Start Part-Time
    2. You Don’t Need An Office
    3. You Don’t Need To Learn Code
If you’re just getting started, don’t waste time learning HTML or CSS. If you already know how to code, put that knowledge aside. The best way to get started is by using a platform. I highly recommend WordPress. Start out by using pre-built themes and plugins. Stay focused on providing results for your clients and keep your learning curve to a minimum. There will be plenty of opportunity to master code down the road – if that is your goal.
    4. Your Schedule Can Be Flexible
    5. The Demand In The Market Is High
    6. The Startup Cost Is Low
    7. The Margins Are High
    8. There Is High Demand For Specialists
    9. Competitors Are Falling Behind
    10. You Can Scale As You Grow
    11. The Timing Is Right
    12. There Are Giants In The Land
    13. Building Websites Opens Doors To New Opportunities
As you put your best into your work, you’re going to learn about clients and their businesses. Along the way, you may discover opportunities to meet a need that hasn’t yet been met. Keep your eyes and ears open. Many now successful app development companies started out doing web development for clients and, along the way, recognized an opportunity to build a service that now reaches a much wider audience. When you run a small business, you’re pulled in several directions every day. If the demands on your time feel overwhelming, take heart: There are thousands of productivity apps out there that can help you do everything from keep a neat to-do list to delegate tasks to employees and stay on top of your business expenses. Without a website, your clients could be going to your competition without even hearing about you. We are living in a fast paced online world and if you don't already have a website then you could be falling behind.

Or not. Plenty of businesses Do Not have a website.

A friend owns a hobby store. He opened it roughly 10 years ago.

Has never had a website nor a facebook page.

He is busy, busy, busy. Word of mouth has brought him all of the
      business that he can handle.

I stopped in to see him. He and his wife and an assistant were so busy
I had to take a rain check.

Same with a little coney place and the party store with sells pizza, subs
and related items. No website for either. Yet, very busy.

Generalizing about the need for online marketing will get you nowhere fast, in the
      real world.

P.S. No one "lives online". We breath, eat, sleep and do most everything else
in the real world. We're people, not pokerman.
