I started out in the Marine Corps with some instruction in Shorin Ryu and Shotokan from some Black Belts in my units.
After the Marines I took up Chinese Kenpo which was an excellent style for a tall, long-legged fellow like me. I did quite a bit of tournament participation in that style (This was in the '70's when the top competitors were men like Bill Wallace, Skipper Mullins and Chuck Norris)
In my 40's I took up Tang Soo Do, eventually earning a Black Belt in that style. The instructors for the actors in the "Karate Kid" movie were from my school and Pat Johnson, the head of our schools, having bought out his partner Chuck Norris, can be seen in the movie as the referee in the tournament scenes.
I tried a little mixed martial arts with Benny Urquidez in the mid-eighties but quickly determined that was definitely a young mans game
At 45, I decided I was getting a little old for tournaments and sparring with youngsters so I've pretty much been out of it for the last 15 years. Lately I've been considering taking up Aikido which seems to me to be a style ideally suited to an old man
