Maybe I'm slow or too nitpicky, but I spend a lot of time hitting problems or something I don't know and then taking hours to learn it or figure it out. Like article spinning software. Or Social marketing. Or making small changes to my Wordpress web site.
I like to be able to control every part of my site and with Wordpress, if you want to go much beyond filling in the blanks, you HAVE to know css and it helps to be able to read at least basic PHP and HTML. I have spent weeks learning those things, and I can SLOWLY, PAINFULLY make changes to my header now -- center up the headline and change that sickly green color to something better -- but I really question whether I'm using my time efficiently.
The model I'm following is "do it once yourself, the first time through. THEN if you want to outsource whatever, you'll know how to do it right and be able to properly manage the people you're hiring". But at this rate it's going to be at least a year before I've gotten a good site up and running and (hopefully) bringing in some significant money.
I'm getting there. Friends and acquaintances even think I'm "very knowledgeable" and "know a lot" about hosting, Wordpress,
SEO, etc, but it seems SO-OOOO SLOOOWWW. And like SO MUCH HARD WORK.
By the end of the year, I'll have worked through buying domains, setting up hosting, basic
SEO, building Wordpress sites, tinkering with the themes, splicing in Aweber mailing lists, article writing, spinning software, article submission services, etc, etc, etc, and I've put days and weeks into some of those areas. Am I just not very smart? Doing it the hard way? Right way? Stupid way?
To be fair, things are not all black. I just spent an hour on the phone with an old friend who's a doctor. I'm going to re-do his website and make almost $1000 for it. Also updates monthly if he likes the site. He fired his old webmaster and hired me because he was impressed with my comments about his site and changes I suggested. So I can see SOME progress.
And there's more to my life than only IM. I'm 68 years old, married, have a 3 year old daughter and make time every day and weekends for some exercise and dinner/evenings/weekends with my wife and daughter. Add 10 hours/night of sleep, maybe a nap, a few computer glitches, other tasks, and whole weeks can go by where I don't see much IM progress. For example, I'm in a 30 article marketing club. The club is on day 12 and I'm still on day 3. I might be getting to day 4 tomorrow or the next day.
Any comments, suggestions or opinions would be welcome.
