Bounce rate is one of the critical metrics which decide the quality of a Blog. in Internet marketing terms a Blog with high bounce rate is taken as a Blog with least effectiveness on the readers.

Here is a screenshot of my blog analytics from WordPress dashboard.

What are the reason for a higher bounce rate?

Your Blog/Blog post is not accessible :
The Blog or Blog post is not accessible because of a server error, Higher load time, or a change in URL.

Your Blog is not attractive:

If you have an ugly design/ template, it can make a bad impression on your Blog. Make a professional look for your Blog, you can see a decrease in bounce rate.

Messy Blog:
The visitors are confused with Blog template. They can not differentiate the content, which are the advertisement and where to look for a solution for their problem.

Blog is not resourceful:
Low quality contents are the major reason for higher bounce rate. If the visitors are not satisfied with content while reading the will bounce back and look for alternatives. Remember that Google is not limited to one single Blog.

No interlinking:
You are not helping the visitors to find related topics by interlinking them.

Too much outgoing links:

It is a good idea to monetize your Blog. But what about your visitors are being diverted to an external website? This can also increase the bounce rate.

Articles are difficult to read:
The article is not well-organized and it became difficult to read and understand.

How to Decrease Bounce rate on Blog?

Decrease the load time :
Page loading time is the most important one. Buy hosting from any well-known hosting providers like ipage, bluehost and hostgator. They are the big players in hosting industry and offer servers with better uptime and load time.

Use any cache plugin like WP faster cache, W3 total cache and use cdn like cloudflare (free version available).

Write quality content :
Content is the way to become a productive blogger. Do not write just articles, well organized quality articles on your blog. If you can write long posts more than 2000 words, It is very effective and productive. Don't B.S.

Insert suitable images. Images can tell thousands of words. Include medias, headings, quotes and paragraphs while writing a Blog posts. This will make the articles easy to read. It is a good idea to use different colors for links, quotes and headings and not to include advertisements inside the articles.

Improve blog design :
Choose a theme suitable to your blog topic/niche. It should make a positive impression on visitors and should load faster in all screens. Use mild colors to your blog.

Your blog design should be simple. It will helps to reader to explore your content. Easy navigation with good typography decrease your bounce rate definitely.

Interlink Articles :
Interlinking articles is the best solution for decreasing bounce rate on Blog. When you write a new article try to link it with older articles using anchor texts. This way the visitors will get more articles to read and stay more time on your Blog. As the number of articles read by a visitor increases the bounce rate of the Blog decreases.

Insert related posts section below each article. The best way to include related article is below the content and sidebar depending on your theme and design. If you include thumbnail better will be the results.

These are the few ways to decrease bounce rate and increase the average page duration on your blog. If you have any suggestions please feel free to share it with warriors through replies.

13 % bounce rate is actually good! Also, you need to check if its on a specific page. Usually, there is high bounce rate on signup pages and if its the same case with you, try simplifying your website's registration process. Also have a check on page loading speed of your website.

I'm under the impression that if your content is all accessible on the front page, your bounce rate could be high because your landing page is also the exit page. Could someone please confirm that a bounce is calculated that way?

If that's the case, a user only needs to click once in order to be opted-out as a bounce?

The bounce rate is how quickly they leave the site as a whole.

Encourage your visitor to go deeper into your site. You can provide a teaser, such as excerpt of a new post or article, however you would want the title/first paragraph to be enticing enough that they would want to continue reading.

There really shouldn't be an exit page, since blog platforms aren't really meant to be used as a sales funnel.

^ You may have a point there. Some people build blogs to make money, so the fact that people land on their blog and then leave by clicking on some link is normal. But, these same people could maybe recommend the blog to others if it's interesting enough. Just my 2 cents!

I'm in no way an expert, but I am a reader of many blogs. I would say forget all these tactics. Write thoughtful, high quality content and you can sell ice to an Eskimo (no offence if anyone is a Eskimo). I see blogs that are only a few days old and they already have affiliate marketing up and down the page and popups everywhere. I'm out of there in 1 second.

I've been to blogs that only had 5 post in 5 years, but the information was timeless, resource rich and high quality content. The person has helped me so clicking on his affiliate links is my pleasure. Donating to his Paypal account is my pleasure. Buying his eBook is my pleasure. Stop focusing so much on bounce rates and start writing epic and unique content. All else will follow. This is just my opinion, but one post should take you a week at least. Stop writing crappy content and all else will follow.

rywp is completely right. Your content is going to determine whether or not people stay on your blog or get bored and leave. Some blogs I visit can keep me engaged for hours at a time, literally soaking up every word in their articles, or watching each video with rapt attention.

On the other hand, some blogs always leave me with the impression of, "Yep, he's trying to sell me something, and there's literally no reason why I should click his links. He hasn't helped me at all."

Content and the design of a site is very important to bounce rate. When a user comes from a google, he hopes what he searched on google from your site. If he can't find the solution, definitely he click the close button or go back to google SERPs.

So satisfaction is the first thing.

If the quality content of your site delight visitor, definitely he will share your post.

Next thing is design. Easily readable, navigatable site have high retention time. Use mild colors to eyes.

The most important thing that OP and everyone here missed: bounce rate might not mean anything at all. If your site is doing the job as in getting conversion whatever that may be for you, trying to lower the bounce rate is not something you should stress about.

For example, social media campaigns and such are something that often causes high bounce rate. Also, writing content that answers the questions as close to perfection as you can might lead to a bounce because the person viewing the page got the answer she was looking for.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.

Simple answer - give it more efforts. If your bounce rate is high, this might mean that you have catchy names of your texts that grabs the attention of your visitors, but when they start reading - they turn the page off, because they don't find anything useful. Try different talking manner, place more images in your texts and see where it takes you.

It’s always recommended to have a search box which is clearly visible. Visitors always prefer to search for articles. If you want to decrease your bounce rate, make sure that you link only relevant articles with each other. Irrelevant articles might irritate your visitors, and they will leave your blog if that is the case.

Just as another tip low bounce rate doesn't mean that sometimes everything is allright. First check if you have double Google Analytics code in your source code. Use Ctrl + F in your source code in your browser and search for your Google Analytics ID. If you have it duplicated you will get very low bounce rate but it will not be for real. In average 65% bounce rate for a blog that just posts very long articles 3 times a week is fine.
