Blogging is truly a hard case-study to follow. I started a blog 6 months ago and haven't found any potential way to increase traffic by only writing quality content. It takes hard work and dedications. My blog is counting 200 unique visitors per day and is averaging 5 dollar's a day.

This is where you should really subscribe to the top blogs...open their emails and be one of the first people to comment and in your comment do not just think of linking back to your own blog but seriously share with that blogger what your biggest challenges are...you will be amazed how generous and understanding these guys/gals can be.

Also do a search for blogs with INCOME REPORTS.

They are literally sharing with you exactly what is working and paying them and also how they are promoting it!

With blogging, the amount of effort you put into your blog, double of that goes to > guest posting, content syndication, building relationships and social networking.

Seems to me that the niche you are in makes it or breaks it! That would be where keyword research comes into play.

Pat seems to be one of the good guys, great content and never too pushy with sales.

Its always good to look at what the experts are doing and then to copy their success, or simply try and better what they do.

I used to do this when I headed up SEO for a large loans company which was my last job. I used to look at what was already blogged about, find the best post on a specific subject and spend my time creating one.. even better! That post would then be the best post on that subject available and would get picked up and reposted naturally, because simply it was a great post.

it's dependable on your vision, blogging somehow not just about how to making money online or driving huge traffics. some people write their mind, passion, their daily activity, personal things, etc. btw, if it's about writing something that could driving huge traffic and more engagement to make some money, then just give more values on your content.

in the simple way, find the answer: "why people would read our blog?"

As far as layout and design goes, I think following the top blogs is a good idea.

However, what really makes a blog successful is the content and only you can put that content there.

Writing about something you want to share with the world is a good start, especially if you can add to it on a very regular basis.

Getting visitors interested in your blog is going to out you on the right track and then you can think about monetization.

Personally, for me, Affiliate Marketing is easier, as there is always something to write good content about.
