How to build traffic on forums?

Hi, I started internet marketing forum in my country two months ago, and I want to take it off the ground in the next 6 months. There was some traction already, but it slowly faded so the site received 10-20 uniques/day. I'd be really glad for any advice. What did help you to start a successful forum website? Should I write some How to's and quality content, get backlinks and wait for better SE ranking positions, or should I focus on building community manually, by targeted email marketing, posting on similar forums and commenting blogs instead?

Thanks a lot.
M.

I hope you have a good comment spam blocker in place.. lol. I just removed over 10,200 comments off my blog that was a total time killer. But, I would say consistently add content that has real value, Work on your SEO skills, build backlinks, get on social media, blog with sharing built in and of course keep on learning as you roll on. Have you considered some paid ads as well?

Generally, you need consistent search engine traffic, or a massive email list - something that generates a constant stream of new people or registration, otherwise, literally, if people come to a forum and no one is there, they're just going to leave.

There is not any magic to increase traffic to your forum.Regular active participation, making moderators, attract users from other forums and share information can increase traffic but it is slow process.

At then end,you will get rock solid traffic to your forum but avoid it from spamming which should be first priority.

Well, the thing with forums is that you need content, which is generated by users. So, you could try to hire some forum posters or ask your friends to register and start posting (if they are familiar with your niche, of course). You should also start posting yourself, start interesting threads, maybe write some short articles with some long tail keywords in them (like you normally would for a blog).

We already have ~100 threads, ~300 posts, but it's still slow. I hope to see some increase in SE traffic soon, as there is some linkbuilding going on, but I thought that you guys might have something special for me

At this point it is difficult to just start a forum with the proliferation of already established sites (like warrior forum), as well as communities in reddit, facebook, g+.

You may be better off starting a blog/vlog growing a mailing list with a community in a known social network that most of your followers use. As you start to hit a critical mass off followers you can then roll them over into your forum.

I think engagement is important for the life blood of any forum, and user base.

You need traffic + interesting content + engagement from your user base

focus on quality and keyword usage when apt. be gentle with your back linking strategy and let most come to you... Take advantage of social media to help that along.

I rank right under Wikipedia for many topics despite having a small fraction of its backlinks, and that's based on my high page quality.

The secret here is you need to come up with a creative solution to the empty restaurant effect.

Most people would not dine at an empty restaurant.

    It is almost possible. Why?

Subconsciously they think that there is something wrong with the food because there are no people eating at the restaurant.

You are stuck with a classic chicken and egg problem.

    You have to start somewhere.

This is why it is always a good idea to invest in seeding your forum with high-quality responses.

By high-quality responses, I am not talking about people who just post how-to’s and interesting advice.

    Anybody can do that.

    I am talking about a personality-driven seeding.

In other words, these people must look like real people that people would want to identify with.

These people must have a personality that radiates.

If you are able to do that, then your forum would take off because guess what, anybody can come up with a forum and dump all sorts of information on it.

That is not going to cut it.

You have to have some semblance of real interaction.

That is what separates high-quality seeding from passive or low-quality seeding.

1.visit similar sites for other teams and see what they are doing to attract members. Copy the good things, leave the bad.
2.visit other Chicago Bear sites and look for ideas the same as above.
3.network with other Chicago sites such as other sports teams
    4. start conversations which people would find interesting.
5.interact with others who talk about the bears on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other sources. Let the world know your site exists.
    6. add social networking to your site. Allow users to log in with their social accounts.

To establish a good amount of traffic, you should have to engage in the forum on daily basis. At first, it is difficult to get traffic for beginner in the forum cause there are already reputed member in the forum. After earning a certain amount of points and followers you can expect some traffic from the forum.

Try to put some new thread and build a community which is demanding.

First you need to increase the no. of members in your forums. Once you'll get huge crowd your traffic will start increasing. So you should join the communities & groups (relevant to your niche) on social networking sites and aware people about your fourms and engage them to your fourm.
