Growth Hacking Tips From DigitalOcean

I found this great video of a presentation by Mitch Wainer, Chief Marketing Officer of DigitalOcean:

It's 37 minutes long but very informative. For those who don't have time, here are the main points:

  • Offer your product for free in the beginning and interview early adopters to collect information about your customers' needs.
  • Measure everything you can (e.g. key performance indicators such as cost per acquisition for different referral sources)
  • Focus on design and strong CTAs
  • A/B test as much as possible. Measure everything you can.
  • Demo your product in front of an audience and offer promos.
  • Include promo codes in your ad campaigns.
  • Measure everything you can.
  • Write and publish content that appeals to your ideal customer (Google likes longer content, 500+ words per page).
  • Use Google's keyword research tool and target high volume, low competition phrases.
  • Submit relevant posts to Hacker News and Reddit
  • Measure everything you can. Use Google Analytics to track campaign performance.
  • Find websites that have ad space with extremely low CPMs (use short headlines in your ads and include an incentive such as a promo code and CTA)
  • Insert retargeting tracking codes on all prospect-facing pages.
  • Incorporate easy social and email sharing.
  • Offer an options for users to receive credits instead of money for referrals.
  • Provide customers with ready-made banner ads for referrals.
  • Use referral contents to incentivise users to generate the most signups within a time frame (30 days works well).
  • Reach out to prospects who follow your key influencers or competitors on Twitter with referral codes.
  • Utilize Facebook Ads which have a low CPC and specific targeting.
  • Answer highly visible questions on Quora
  • Answer Tweets and social media mentions in a timely manner.
  • Make your email signup form simple.
  • Short subject lines work best for emails.
  • Add a large call to action in every email.
  • Measure everything you can. A/B test every email, especially subject lines.
  • The best time to send emails is Tuesday-Thursday between 11am-4pm Eastern Time (may vary depending on your niche but this is when the most internet users are online).
  • Send followup emails with promo codes to customers who drop out of your signup process, downgrade their plan, or fail to renew subscriptions.
