Look at me Mama I'm Growth-Hacking Terms!

There's this thing with Internet marketers. They suffer from the terminology obsession syndrome. You simply can't promote yourself into an influential guru marketer without a term of your own. This the reason why we have ended up with hundreds of terms, which describe or explain more or less the same or surprisingly similar Internet marketing phenomena. Yet, as a guru marketer you have to feed your vanity beast with new terms over and over again. Nowadays, it's not enough to be a successful Internet marketer, but you also have to be recognized as the "father" of marketing this or marketing that term.

Internet marketing terms hyper-production

So, where are examples of my claims? Well, I appreciate any marketer's effort and I don't want to sound ungrateful. Yet, if you insist, then you leave me with no choice than to kind you ask you to explain a huge difference between inbound and permission marketing, among many others. It goes without saying that these aren't the same terms, but my question is: Are they really so different that they deserve a special term? Just give it a thought with not too many emotions, if possible. My point is, we already need a dictionary of terms, so we don't get lost in the confusing Internet marketing jungle.

Unfortunately, it has become more important for a certain Internet marketing technique, tool or approach to know how it's going to be called, rather than to determine what exactly it does. Let me name it, and I have plenty of time to determine what I'm going to do with it later. Sounds familiar? Sometimes, I'm afraid to close my eyes for a couple of hours to rest, because as soon as I wake up there will be some new Internet marketing term waiting to present itself to me. This was a shameless exaggeration, but it doesn't mean it's too far from the truth.

Termeners rule the Internet marketing world

Here you go. I just came up with a new term - Termeners. Those are Internet marketers with a true passion for terminology. Are you one of them? Can you admit it to yourself? Or, maybe you feel naked without a fancy term to impress the crowd. Can we create a set of simple words? If you're describing an Internet marketing approach or tool, and you need to use more than two or three sentences, then maybe you deserve a new term. Otherwise, hold your vanity horses, because this place is overcrowded with all kinds of terms we need more or less.

Do you think that a serious reduction of all Internet marketing terms is going to change something dramatically, in terms of your efficiency or success? The first thing you'll notice is that you can breathe and navigate more easily. You'll certainly appreciate a rare opportunity to focus on what you do, rather than to be obsessed how you're going to call it. Today I was creative. I was even ingenious. There's no need to become a growth hacker. I will demonstrate you the unbelievable skills of growth hacking. Seriously? The last time I checked, the best examples of growth hacking in Internet marketing could be simply described as creative, smart, ingenious, refreshing, intelligent, cost-effective, and in dozens of other ways. Does labeling them as growth-hacking is going to change something about their role or essence?

As soon as you forget about terms, you begin fixing problems

If you are a huge fan of some of your favorite term, you don't have to defend it at all costs. No one is going to take it away from you. My guest guess is that you are completely unaware ho many principles and techniques in Internet marketing you apply on a daily basis. Do you know how they're called? Do you know all the names of all marketers who gave birth to some more or less known terms? Does the fact that you're blessed with a complete ignorance in this field makes these principles and techniques to disappear? It's so simple, but we like to complicate things, don't we? I already gave you an idea. Start working on the first dictionary of Internet marketing terms. This book may not be a huge hit, but I am pretty much sure it will keep you warm during cold and long winter nights thanks to its impressive number of pages. Something similar to the legendary and endless War and Peace.

    Good post.

Cool before content is common. Just be yourself and use plain English and everyone will understand you, including the layman.

Couldn't agree more. It got me thinking about how a simmilar thing happened with NLP. Let's think of a few really simple terms and give them a grand-sounding word.
