Here is a video from Dave McClure from 500 startups about startup metrics. This applies to all online business. I posted it in the other growth hacking thread but I wanted to seperate this out into it's own thread.

Yeh that's right. At Freelancer.com we have our very Pirate team which different people responsible for each "letter".

I know a lot of you guys may not be able to create different teams for each metric but you should have different campaigns for each one and track the effectiveness of each campaign.

      e.g.

Acquisition - What are your acquisition channels? What are your acquisition costs and what are your acquisition numbers?
Activation - What is your conversion of your acquisitions?
Retention - After activating and using your product, service or signing up to your membership, how often do they come back
Referral - Get your customers to refer their friends
Revenue - Where is your revenue coming from? Monitor the movements of revenue and understand why

Love the video! There are some very key elements that are brushed over in this that I find very interesting. Actually 3 very key elements. #1 Best Performing #2 Largest Volume and #3 Lowest Cost.

Standard IM thinking is that we obviously want the absolute best ROI. That is how we make money. Hence the standard argument over PPC vs Organic.

So we focus on one if not two of these methods. The most obvious is 'Best Performing'. For many just starting out the focus more than likely is 'Lowest Cost'. We then look at 'Largest Volume' as less targeted and undesirable.

As I see it, Growth Hacking sees at the very least equal value across all 3 and actually may look more towards 'Largest Volume' before the others.

So there is #1 'Best Performing' Using PPC as a base here. Given the flow of traffic it is easy to determine the ROI within this traffic base. So many visitors = so many sales. When I am starting a new web property I do use PPC. I use it not only for traffic, but for A/B testing as well. There are actually some cases that I only use it for initial A/B testing, and then pull it off ( Sounds crazy I know )

Then there is #3 'Lowest Cost' I see this as Organic traffic, Social media etc. Yes there is a cost factor in getting this traffic I do understand that. If you are a bit more than a partnership or a one man show and actually have a person or staff that does your SEO and the like there is a actual number that represents these efforts. ( that team or persons salary ) By enlarge however, there is no question that these efforts in short and long term do provide the least expense, or best ROI for gained traffic.

#2 'Largest Volume' is something I have used for years. I would think it is the least used in IM, if its not converting, I don't want it type attitude. Growth Hacking looks at it differently. If someone looks over an article, and the next day at the water cooler shares the information with a friend.. it did its job.

There is another side to Large Volumes of traffic. It has to do more with the ability to list your Lowest Cost avenue of traffic. As we all know on the forum we preach long tail keywords are the way to go. Again targeted traffic creates conversions. That being said. Traffic to your site specifically targeted to convert, or not helps with things such as Page Rank, page relevance and a host of many other factors. Traffic is the BASE to solid SERP listings. Solid SERP listings in turn create conversions, and conversions create cash.

There is without question a balance across all three elements. Something I think in general is over looked.
