Multilingual or many sites in different languages?

Hi

I have a digital product to sell, and I think my own country is too small to market the product only here, so I'm going to market it in more - 5 countries to start with.

Would you recommend (and why?):

1.
having only 1 .com domain with more languages

or

2.
having 5 sites with ccTLDs and each country's own language?

Thank you so much

- Liam

Google has a new language markup feature which I would think ideal for multiple languages. Facebook uses the same website for all languages but Google uses separate TLD for each. Thus, I think you can go with whatever is easiest for you.

If it's a digital product, there's no reason to not go with a .com and translated versions of your website. Open source content management systems like Wordpress, Drupal etc make this realtively straight forward with the correct plugins/modules.

I would go with .com too.
I've seen people be very successful having major markets with .com and then slightly localizing the product for different audiences. For example, a game had one major portal but a slightly different brand for the Romanian market.

Same with with French Quebecers. If you can find a local culture reference to incorporate in your brand, it will set it apart in the market. If you just went out and did a generic French translation, you'd be missing out on this potential brand building.

    Just something to think about.

To add up, would it be considered as duplicate content, if ever the content will be in multi language?

Google prefers single-language multi-country, multi-language multi-tlds, subdomains, subdirectories in that order. So you should have different tlds which target each country - we won't bother getting in to why as it will be over everyones head - took us 1yr to understad it - but don't mix languages on the same site.
