SSL on the website is said to be a have a small, tiny, boost in the overall ranking algorithm. It is something I will personally not bother with unless it affects over 5% of search results.

This like so many of Google's other updates will discriminate against low-budget websites. I really hate to say it, but Google has become pretty elitist in their approach to rank these days...

I think free SSL is worthless. There are many drawbacks of free SSL

      1. It is for simple domain validation only,
      2. Thought it ignores security warnings but the life time of free SSL is only 2-3months.
      3. Due to low reliable factor of user's trust, Its not good to install free SSL for an E-Commerce website.

It will be better to buy SSL Certificate from trusted authority for 1year or more.

Aside from the Google ranking there is user confidence that is by far more important. Like anything else that is brought up here. Test it. Does throwing prospects to a SSL encrypted page increase conversion?

I will tell you my test showed that it did. ALL of my web properties are SSL encrypted from top to bottom.

Not true. i have several client that ran out and bought an SSL just because they heard that it will help their SEO.

They have NO NEED for an SSL whatsoever. Absolutely none.

And now, because they think they NEED it, we are having to deal with installation and incompatibilities with the SSL and various externally hosted widgets/scripts o their site as well as cross-browser issues etc.

Honestly I seriously doubt that NOT having SSL will hurt your site at all.. especially when you dont need one because you are not transmitting any sensitive data like credit cards.

I think for sites that do collect c.c. or have other real reasons or needs for an SSL will benefit but if you do not require it there are many better things you can do with your time and efforts that may cause a better affect in your rankings than this.

Agreed. SSL can be a PIA primarily because there is not good implementation info out their for the NON-techy or even QUITE techy.

It seems very elitist and is designed to keep it that way.

Couple that with privacy laws aimed at companies protecting data it all just ends up costing the consumer more.

Now that in business we HAVE to use EFTPOS and CREDIT it just makes us more vulnerable to scrutiny and RED TAPE from the powers that be.

IRONIC Google pays little TAX yet wants everyone else to secure everything and now in Australia business is expected to store data securely ?? for two years on some GOVT wish to target terrorism. Expect the real agenda is tax compliance and govt revenue.

This thread is nothing but a spam magnet for people to advertise their SSL affiliate links.

SSL should have nothing to do with SEO, period. In fact they don't and the only reason they do is because "google says so?"

Neither should social media. What does that have to do with SEO ultimately? Nothing.

Google has tricked us all into believing that we must optimize our sites for the search engines.. even the name SEO is a trick: Search Engine Optimization.

All we are doing is helping optimize their search engine, when we should all be calling it Website Search Optimization or something like that and we should ONLY be worrying about optimizing our SITES for our VISITORS and NOT FOR a search engine.

If people one day all at once stopped giving a shit about google, it would instantly lose it's power over us! Unfortunately though a new evil would step in to fill the void, i'm sure.
