I just got a new computer and I was basically using Malwarebytes with Comodo anti virus with my old system. So now I thought I would try something else. I'm going with Panda anti-virus free version right now along with Malwarebytes.

I'm not interested in hearing about Norton or McAfee, but how about the other offerings such as Quihoo or Emsisoft?

Do you see any need to go with a paid for version at all?

Eset Nod32 hands down the best. I've never had a virus in 3 years of using them. Also I cannot understand why people use free antivirus programs if they are serious about protection. Remember the saying "you get what you pay for".

Why don't you purchase for Kaspersky Internet security ? It's just about 15$ a year !

Having used or tried many, I now use Bitdefender Total Security.

It ranks at or near the top of most reviews, is very lightweight in that there is no noticeable 'drag', and my $59 subscription gives me a license for 3 machines; otherwise I'd have to use or pay for 3 licenses - my main PC, my laptop, and the 'home' computer.

I have used Quickheal total internet protection & currently using Avast total internet security from last two years both are awesome! You can use either of them, as i didn't faced any issues in last four years while using these two Total internet security's yearly subscriptions.

Along with whatever main AV program you get, Malwarebytes is a 'must': Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software

As it has already been mentioned, use Avira.

I've had Avira on my computers for the last 4-5 years. I only had one mishap about a year ago, where it would stop and quarantine a virus, but when I would try to remove it from my computer it would not. So, it's not perfect, but for a free anti-virus software it's nearly perfect.

I use (the free version of) Avast, have used it for long time and it has served me well. Only thing is I had to disable all the useless extra features which they have added over the years, and disable annoying popups ("Your virus database got updated..." 3x/day). Once you get the settings to your liking, the core antivirus program is very good.

I second this... An outside anti-virus will bog your system down and is unnecessary in my opinion. Windows Defender is more than enough unless you are frequenting some pretty sketchy sites.

Microsoft Essentials is not considered to be a strong or comprehensive AV solution.

From a recent review in a reliable tech publication (http://redmondmag.com/articles/2015/...us-test.aspx): "...coming in dead last among 28 competitors, but it scored 0 out of 6 points in the category of malware protection."

I'm using AVG free and it is quite frankly, the best anti-virus I've tried.

Sure, others are more advanced with more functionality, but in the day to day, I hated the obtrusiveness of them always popping up warnings over the littlest things.

What sites are you going to? what type of content are you downloading? If you're not visiting really sketchy sites than I think AVG free will be more than sufficient.

If it's Windows 8 you have on your new computer, you don't need any antivirus, many tests have proven that the build in windows defender is as good as the best anti viruses, the new smartscreen filter also does a great job.

Don t use only an antivirus! You need to protect also by malware and othe insidiuos programs!

    Try to Use:
    - Avira (free anti virus)
    - adwcleaner: a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers (WARNING: Download the oriinall, not the copy!)
    - Spybot - Search & Destroy

MSE (Now windows defender in 8 and beyond) is beyond adequacy.

Want to know how to prevent yourself from getting infected?

    1) Disable Java

    2) Don't download pirated media. (And if you do, you'd better not be a newb. Sandbox it if you're concerned. The majority of malware infections occur as a result of visiting SHADY websites).

    3) Install "NoScript", "Ad Block Plus", and anything else that prevents scripts from activating in your browser.

    4) Avoid executing Server.exe.
