I want to setup my own autoresponder and skip monthly highly payments.Looked at apps like mailwizz, mailpoet or mymail. Then use sendgrid or amazon smtp.

What do you think? Have anyone any suggestions? What is the best of program/ plugins to use? What autoresponder do you use and why? Best SMTP and so on..

Personally I think current ones like Mailchimp and Aweber are best as they already so developed and provide you with a tone of cool features. You can also use the same account to create multiple lists and the monthly fee is only $20 so not much.
Creating your own? depends how techie you are as I'd imagine there's a ton of coding you see,,,

I've used MailPoet and like it a lot. Most other third party plugins that use mail services will integrate with it. It's also been in development for awhile and has a good history of support.

MyMail is also a good choice for WordPress, although it has less third party support.

I hear good things about Mailwizz, but its a bit more complicated then the rest to use and has a few extensions that will cost you to use.

All of these have good suggestions of the popular SMTP services they work with.

I use both aweber and mailwizz (self hosted)

Ive used other self hosted scripts in the past with many issues. Mailwizz has great support, works very well and im actually getting a better open rate and click through rate when using it

I suggest you to start with MailerLite (as an alternative to GR/Aweber). It is quite powerful and best of all, it allows user to start for free. Not free for the first month, but free for the first 1000 subscribers with unlimited emails.

With 1000 targeted subscribers, you can generate more than sufficient revenue to cover the autoresponder expenses. MailerLite charges only $10 for subscribers up to 2500, which is very affordable.

I have used mailwizz with amazon ses, mailgun and some different smtp services.
Mailwizz is not hard to install if you have done any installs on an ftp server before. They have great support too! As for opens and clicks, results with mailwizz were a lot worse than with aweber. Maybe you can get better if you warm up slowly and send out unspammy mails (which I don't do)
I don't know any of the others you mentioned.
I also used sendy, but this was a really bad experience, it stopped working and support was no good. Instead of trying to figure out my bugs they simply refunded me without a comment.

For self hosted email marketing software, I'm using:

    1. Mailwizz.com

The only drawback: You cannot edit the "confirmation email subject" for each lists.

    2. Sendy.co

Suitable for simple / basic features for email marketing.
