GetResponse? No it should be renamed to GetLotsOfBugs!

I used to recommend Getresponse over Aweber. (because they had one option that aweber didn't and because they were less of control freaks than aweber)

Well, I didn't use Getresponse for a while and recently needed it for a client and told him to sign up with them so that I can setup campaign for him.
Well, after dealing for the last 2 weeks with Getresponse I can only say:
Whenever you hear the name "GetResponse" run as fast as you can!

It is unbelievable! After the last update that they had (I believe 2-3 months ago) the whole thing is soo filled with bugs that I cannot believe that!
It is very obvious they didn't test a d*mn thing!
I'm debugging this BETA thing all the time!

Every time, literally EVERY TIME when I have to do something on that site, I have to get to their chat support BECAUSE OF THE BUGS!
I am paying money, or in this case the client is paying money, but I have to put in time again and again and again to debug their thing!

Did no one here experience that?

Am I the only person who is debugging their BETA system?

As far as my client goes I told him we are moving to a self-hosted system ASAP.
I know that despite the common myth a self-hosted system would have less deliverability, the opposite is true. You just have to properly setup the self-hosted system and setup a maintenance system for that.

    >> I dont use GR but what do the bugs do?

ALL sorts of bugs! I can barely move around without bugs getting in my way!
And all are stupid, very stupid bugs that just scream that they did not test anything!
Because if you'd test just ONCE you would in any case see these bugs.

    >> Makes me glad I went with aweber from the start.

I don't think aweber is a good option either.

Here is just one example I have right now:
Last time I had to get a rep on the chat just to get to know what is the maximum allowed size for PDF attachments. Can you believe that?
I was just getting some random errors and it was just my *guess* that those errors probably have something to do with the maximum file size.
Can you believe that? I had to GUESS what the cause of the error might be!
And then to get the rep in order to know the max. file size!

OK, the rep told me the max. PDF size is 400KB.
I've created a PDF, under 400KB (to be send as attachment with the first followup message). And then I've tested everything. Everything was OK.

Just now I've discovered (by signing up with one of my test emails) that the users are getting 4 (FOUR) of the identical PDF 370KB each!
All of a sudden 400KB seems not the maximum size anymore.
So, into the support chat again:
The rep: Yes, 400KB is still the max. size. He is suggesting to remove those 3 identical files.
OK, I'm clicking on "delete" on *one* file and this thing is ADDING 10 more files to the attachment!
    Can you believe that?

I mean, just this one case shows clearly: They have not done ANY testing whatsoever!
And this bug is just one of DOZENS!
All the others prove in the same way: They have not done any testing whatsoever.
And this update was not just yesterday or something.
I don't know the exact date but to my knowledge it was at least 2-3 months ago...

I usually like getresponse, did have a lot of bugs when they did their upgrade a few months ago, but most seem to be out from my experience anyway.

However, I don't use attachments (I use plain old simple text emails to ensure no problems LOL), so I can't vouch for anything related to that. (I link to files rather than include them, which is often better anyway).

There are only two issues I've had this week:

    1) after spending over an hour creating a new web form (the old way was SO much easier/faster - and I'm REALLY NOT a dummy with this stuff), I finally contacted the chat to see how they wanted me to change "NAME" to "FIRSTNAME", as is a predefined field in their newsletter personalization options.

Duh. She told me to go into (the wrong area but I found the right one minutes later) and ADD the predefined field.

Um. Hello - this is a field that ALREADY exists, so why do I have to create it, which then changes EVERYTHING. (Example: in the merge field, its [[firstname]] according to their personalization... but if you create it yourself in the predefined fields as she instructed, it shows that I then have to use [[pre_firstname]]. Definitely not a match.

The problem that bugs me the most about this, is that she couldn't direct me to the OLD format that used to be there, that showed how you can tweak it with variations to include first or last name (or both), and it would even give you the form code.

At least my old code works, I'll simply be pulling it to recreate it for our new site. But my pet peeve about this is its supposed to be easier/better... if you have to surf around and click on many things AND read the help files for an hour to find something that WAS there... and the help desk can't help... then something needs to be fixed.

    2) I use firefox 2.0.0.3 (yeah, I know there's more recent versions, but I like to ensure that sites work in "older" browsers - learned that the hard way a few years ago lol).

When you go to create a newsletter...

the body of the newsletter is to the RIGHT of the screen stretched way over, doubling the width of the page so I have to scroll.

Simple fix: their div tags are messed up somewhere not to figure out how to work with FF2. (When I tried it with IE6, it told me I had an "old browser" and should upgrade... sorry, I don't like sites that suggest that! As I explained above WHY I keep with older ones... new ones are on my laptop, but this pc is what I use most)

    My 2 rants

These are just minor though compared to the issue above of the files.

Hopefully Simon will pop in here and address these.

Getresponse otherwise is pretty good now that most stuff is ironed out.
