What video cameras do you guys use?

Hey Warriors,

I'm thinking of buying a mini camcorder like the Flip Mino HD or Ultra HD...

I'd like to know if anyone has a reason why I should or should not buy this model and any suggestion on what make/model I should consider.

I appreciate all your help

      I use a flip, 60-minute version. Pre-mino model. Dead easy, especially for on-the-go stuff, and decent quality vid.

      The one downfall of the Flip is the built-in mic. Look for the latest model - and their competing knock-off (Kodak?) - that now come w jack for external mic.

      There was a discussion on that new camera in ... I think it was the thread where everyone was getting ready to go to Raleigh. Someone had just received their new model. Have a look in that thread for the Flip competitor.

    There are quite a few more cameras on the market that are better than the flip now that the trend has been set.

    Personally I use the Sanyo Xacti CG-10 and the Sanyo VPC-HD100 but I've also been looking at the Kodak because it has a mic plug.. The sound on the Xacti's is nice enough that I'm not worried about it for now though..

        Wow, thanks for going to this much effort!!!

        I really appreciate it. The talking head thing is new to me and I'm just doing Camtasia stuff so it's a natural progression. People rave about the Flips (bought by Cisco for a nice chunk of change so they're doing something right).

        What file format does the Canon record to?

          I have a flip cam, and to be honest, I think it's a load of rubbish... BUT, having saying that, for catching those moments on the go with family and friends, and what have you, i guess is ok... i dont find the format all that good, pretty bad quality...

          The HDFS10 that I have, is the best one on the market for it's model. It cost $1789.00 + TAX, I also go the speaker attenuator as well, a add on that you add to the top of a camera that looks like a fuzzy gray squirrels tail this enhances the sound and takes out any background noise... and the picture quality is AWESOME!

          Its the next one down from the Sony that you can use to create movies with you know, the $6K+ ones. This Canon one does just as well.

          If you have a HD TV, man, the video comes out MUCH better, just like those HD movies you watch

          I've got a green-screen (Chroma Key) too, plus stands and lighting and what have you aswell, it takes up half of my office space, the thing is huge. 20 foot by 30 foot. and murder to wrap up again...lol

          the file format has a weird extension - i can't recall off hand what it is, but software comes with it that converts back to avi I think... but I use a free converter to switch it back to any of the 9 or so video formats.

          You can view to as high as 3200 x 1800 or something dimensions, with standard 1920 x 1080 dimensions...

          definitely worth it has heaps of other built in features as well.

        It's the Zi8


        I like the ergonomics of the xacti a little better than the Kodak, and having an external mic isn't that important to me, just one of those "nice to haves". My HD100 does 1080 and the CG10 does 720 plus I have a few other cameras that are full sized that do 1080 and hook up to external mics if i need.

    Me too...I can't see a problem with it since it's 1080p and way cheaper than the 2 hour version (and expandable)

    Plus the cables come with it. Amazon has it for 160...

    Any help?

    Mostly use my samsung l370 digitial camera for photos for flickr and photography websites, plus on social nights as it also has the video enhancement to plug up to a plasma television or lcd television so i could watch the video playback in hd quality.

    Its sorta the same as the kodak model everyone has mentioned on here so far yet the kodak has better functions at least im told by friends who own one also.

    Panasonic HS300 - its a compact beauty, though I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a decent CPU and software (for editing down the HD) and know you way around video a bit.

    If you want point and record, I have also heard the ZOOM Q3 is quite good, though have not had a chance to pick one up yet

    Brad, just found out the vid format, it's in a *.mts extension.

    I use the AVSVideoConverter6 software, which allows you to conver to:

    AVI, To DVD, To MP4, to MPEG, to WMV, to Flash, to MOV, to 3GP, to RM, and has various profile settings for the video format, ie, blackberry phone, for youtube, etc.

    Hi Brad,

    I use the Flip Ultra HD and I love it. Extremely easy to point, shoot, upload and edit, especially with Camtasia 6

    Oh and just FYI, I've owned a Canon Vixia HD camera before. Yeah it's nice, but with all of the modes on it, it's a bit complicated to mess with... especially when shooting something in cinemode or 24p, then having to upload it and start converting it and doing all of the "pulldown" stuff.... it was too much of a pain in the ass for just some online videos

    Flip Ultra seems to work for me! Although I quite often forget mine but always have my Nokia N95 8gb cell phone which affords me very good video and audio..

    Other friends use their I phones and have left the Flip -

    But usually I'm lazy and just use the built in iSight camera on the Mac.

    I LOVE my Flip Video... and I still have the 60 min version that came out a year or two ago... haven't upgraded to the HD version. I just love how compact it is, how easy it is to shoot and then upload and have your video uploaded to a hosting site in only minutes. It's great... but really depends on your needs I suppose.

    FWIW for basic online videos I just use my Canon S1 IS. It does beautiful 640 x 480 video at 30fps and is dead simple to use. As a plus I usually carry my Canon around with me so flipping into video mode is just a click away...

    I heard all the buzz about the new Flip UltraHD. However, I'm not inclined to follow the hype so fast. I checked out some of its competition, and one that jumped out at me was the Sony Webbie HD MHS-PM1.
