Hi guys and gals,

Has anyone here had any experience with Amazon's S3 service?

If so, which one did you use?

There seems to be quite a few services and for the newbie customer which service to use seems a bit confusing.

I use it to host video files. Costs a few cents a month.

I'm using Amazon S3 for my videos, and loving it. Here's what to do:

        1. Log into your regular Amazon account (the one you buy books with), and aply for Amazon S3 (I believe you'll find it under some services link.

        2. Follow their instructions and copy down the security keys they give you.

        3. Also, apply for Cloudfront (Amazon's new distribution system), as this will greatly speed up delivery.

        4. Add S3Fox plugin to your Firefox browers. Then, you use it to upload your videos like an FTP client.

        5. After uploading, set permissions and distributions (instructions on S3Fox's page)

        6. Copy URL and put in your player embed.

Click here to see my latest video. It's 800 px wide (big video) and loads instantly - due to using Cloudfront.

(Amazon is the storage facility. Cloudfront the distribution)

          Cheers Kevin,

But isn't that Cloudfront service more expensive? Man, why do all these multi-billion dollar companies make things so hard to understand about their price chart? lol

they have so many different prices, its hard to know what one I'm gonna be charged.

CloudFront is NOT more expensive. It is actually a bit cheaper than S3 from a bandwidth perspective.

I use AmazonS3 and recommend the service. Great if you have cheap hosting and you want to speed up the loading of your images on your website - very cheap and reliable. Easy to use if you use the S3Fox plugin.

      Amazon s3 is great!

Better suited for people who don't want their videos
branded(All video sites add their branding to your videos)

But you'd need a commercial version either jw or flow player, if you want
to brand your brand with your videos

Also their there is no limit for the video length,
like other video sites, you can upload as big videos as you want
you only pay for what you use and its quite cheap too.

Its useful for private videos like in membership sites,
although cloudfront has some security issues, but there
is a great thread in the war room about hosting private
videos using s3 for membership sites that you might
      want to check out.

Then there is s3flowshield plugin(I use it myself) for wordpress based
blogs which takes care of security issues in case that's your concern.

All in all s3 is a great service but they should be
doing a better job teaching their customers how to efficiently
use their service, there aren't many tutorials,
its pretty much learn by trial and error.

      Cheers!

        Cheers Rahul,

I just bought the Easy Video Player, and found a Amazon S3 protection script to hide from search engines and anyone who may pass on the link without my permission, etc. so got those bases covered.

Good to know about the no limit on the length, kinda reminds of an idea to get a site up and running like YouTube and use Google Adsense and other affiliate products to pay for the bandwidth.

What security problems occured about the cloudfront?

From what I have read things have been sorted out now, is this a recent new problem ?

Are you sure its not about the issue of people setting the folder permissions properly?

I am using the easy video player myself, its pretty neat tool!

Cloudfront only increases the speed at which our media loads, its more like content delivery mechanism like kevin rightly explained, but look at this
(this is take from cloudfront overview page)

"Amazon CloudFront delivers your static and streaming content using a global network of edge locations. Requests for your objects are automatically routed to the nearest edge location, so content is delivered with the best possible performance. Amazon CloudFront works seamlessly with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) which durably stores the original, definitive versions of your files. Like other Amazon Web Services, there are no contracts or monthly commitments for using Amazon CloudFront - you pay only for as much or as little content as you actually deliver through the service."

Now the issues I have read about are with their API, and it is my understanding that not long ago we had to set everything as readable in s3 bucket for cloudfront to be able to distribute, thus leaving the data
vulnerable to search engines and those who know basic html.

I don't know if that has been solved yet, but I don't use cloudfront
for distribution, both jw player, and easy video player do a great job integrating the media from s3 without cloudfront distribution as well
so I don't worry about it

What protection script are you talking about?

Could you show me the link?

You can PM me if you want...

          Cheers!

thanks, it's not the case of me having cheap hosting. it's the case of not wanting to go over my 5TB per month bandwidth.

I got like 10GB of videos (and increasing every day), when ya got like 300 members and growing around 5-10 a day, the bandwidth tends to add up some.

I'm already hitting the 1.4TB per month, just need to get ready before the real marketing starts.

I've used S3 and EC2... both are quite valuable. Yes the services can be a little confusing but like what kevin said, get the s3fox extension it makes the process as easy as using and ftp program.

As for EC2 it gets a little more complex... As far as I know there are no instances that automatically setup ready to go with plesk and everything, so in order to do this you need a little help by someone that knows a little about linux. I think I made a guide for how to do this step by step a while ago... Perhaps I'll look into offering it to people in the near future if there is enough demand.

I am very interested in this, I have had a very frustrating time with vimeo and of course youtube, but I've always been concerned about the costs they're not very clear on Amazon, it looks like the charge pennies per view but do they not charge for the actual storage of your material?

Can someone give me an idea of what a monthly cost would be for a modest site with PPC traffic? Do they charge every time someone hits the play button or when there's an impression of the video?

      Thanks

thanks, but I'm not paying for it. I'm asking what services should one use. not how to. please read the post properly and stop trying to palm off your product in a post that wasn't even talking about how to do it.

I use it with Easy Video Player too. Very simple to run.

Easy Video Player seems to protect the video although Wilson above in his WSO says it is not perfect.

that's why you need to use the amazon s3 php class, and that will protect your video for membership sites. If anyone tries to pass on the URL, it'll come up something like "invalid url" or something or another.
