What's your favourite Anti-Virus program?

Just bought a new desktop and was hoping to get some opinions about anti-virus programs. I have PC-Cillin on my laptop, but that subscription runs out in a month or two. Seems to do just fine and I can get a copy for $20 at the campus computer store at the university in my hometown.

My desktop has a two month subscription to Norton installed and I have been using it so far. When I transferred files from my laptop over to my desktop, it actually found three trojans in three separate files (and says they were successfully eliminated). PC-Cillin never flagged these files though, so I'm curious if the program isn't as comprehensive as others.

Any recommendations would be great!

Norton is awesome. With antivirus software I believe you get what u pay for. I would rather pay a couple more dollars to get superior protection.

I agree... Im using it for over 2 years and no problem...
Im also a Norton User/Avid whatever you call it before... but im experiencing alot of Lag before w/c i hate...

so when my brother introduced me to AVAST it was the best...you wouldn't knw it was there working on the background.... but still provide good protection... two thumbs up !!!

        Avast.com

just be sure to get the home use so they wont ask you for a charge...

but if you have the extras...go for it...

Avast is just my personal experience and opinion its always up to you...

        Good luck !!!

I use Norton, but that is a subscription service. I have AVG Free installed on my wife's desktop. We have also tried the free version of Avast but I found it was too instrusive. You can check out Download.com from CNET for the links to the free downloads.

Thanks for the reply. I had Norton years and years ago and remember it slowing my system down, but so far I haven't had any problems with my new cpu.

Just from doing some reading on cnet and other places, it seems like Norton or Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 would be the way to go.

Yep....intrusive ad nauseam! I tried to "upgrade" to the latest Avast and have had nothing but difficulties. Now I must uninstall with awsclear from their website (in safe mode of windows) in order to get new installed.

Easier to go back to AVG and get the job done.

McAfee really dose the job and it is easy to install. McAfee also runs security against Internet threats and you have protections in anti-spam, anti -phishing and many more....

If I had the money I would go for Kaspersky cuz I have read all kinds of reports how it is the highest rated. But I'm broke so I use AVG Free, it's effective and doesn't affect my pc performance at all like norton did.

I've had more clients who had problems with Nortan on their system than just about anything else over the years, it's a real system hog and tends not to "play nicely" with lots of other software. I now suggest Kaspersky, but AVG is very good too and I use that on several of my own systems.

From my experience I would like to prefer McAfee. It is the best anti-virus program you can install on your desktop or laptop. It doesn't make slow your computer as Norton does.

My vote goes to avast. I've used avg and avast and i always seem to go back to avast. Avg seems to slow my system down and it does use more resources than avast. Don't know why some say that avast is slower than avg, when i find it the exact opposite.

Check cnet's site and you'll see that avast is better ranked by it's users.

Also do check out av-comparatives site as they independently review all major anti-virus programs :-
    AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org

And here is the link to the latest comparisons report :-

Avast as a free antivirus gets the highest advanced status among other paid anti-viruses.

Sorry folks but Google Top 10 Antivrus and you will see Bitdefender Total Security is by far the best of the best. It smashes virus silly and doesn't bog your whole PC down to a standstill like Nortons.

For the best use Bitdefender Total Security

I use the paid version of AVG - I could not continue with Norton as it would not let me log into the system and pay after the free perioud had ended
