I suggest Avg paid, covers it all with multiple layers of protection and includes a firewall with it also.

Tried Norton, Kapersky, McCafee, but love my AVG!

Hehe....I see nobody mentioned any of the products made by Ascentive. I accidentally ordered some of their software on a whim (fine, I was a little drunk) and they all worked to crapfection. Tried to get my money back and there was no way to get in touch with them. Had to call the credit card company, blah blah blah blah blah, yes, don't use anything by Ascentive.

I would rate Kaspersky as the best but after recent false positives with Google Adsense I've switched to NORTON.

Years ago, used Norton. A flat-out pain in the back porch.

Then I switched to AVG free. Great package...and still good. But then came an upgrade, and by monitoring my system resources, I could see that it was eating up more than it had before.

Currently on Avast...and happy. Uses hardly any resources and catches nearly all the bad guys.

For real hardcore pests, I use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. And for routine cleanups, I use CCleaner and AdvancedSystemCare.

If Avast ever goes south or lets me down, I'll look into NOD32, Kaspersky, or BitDefender.

Software isn't like marriage. You can easily get a "divorce," and even practice polygamy.

Kaspersky has my vote

Just installed on my XP where I have had Norton 360 for a year, then went to AVG paid version (6 months) and AVG caught and fixed the 2 viruses and 3 trojans that Norton 360 missed.

When I installed Kaspersky, it caught and fixed 4 trojans and 3 viruses that AVG (paid version) had missed.

On my Vista 64 I have been quite happy with the paid version of Avast and when I installed the Kaspersky on it, 2 trojans and 6 viruses were caught and fixed.

I purchased a 3 license, brand new Internet Security 2010 Kaspersky from ebay for $30 but it may cost closer to $60 to renew next year, but it will be worth it with these results.

I vote for Norton, Comcast just changed from Mcafee to Norton . My computer runs faster and is just better. Norton doesn't have as many files to download. It updates its spyware daily if necessary. It is more efficient than McAfee. A lot of users like avast because it is free. My daughters use it and swear by it... But they recently changed to Mcafee.

Just my 02. worth.

Hi

I'm also looking for a new Security Package since installing
Kaspersky I/S 2010.. Previous releases no problem but I
would not recommend the 2010 version it's a real CPU
gobbler. Updates, which happen frequently, just take over
and hog till they are done, resource monitor regularly shows
high cpu usage.

However never had any virus/malware problems.

Thanks for the advice on alternative products looking at
Nod 32 now.

I'm even considering going for a Mac.

As I said earlier in the thread ESET NOD32 has a very low footprint and is worth a try.

The product to watch out for over the next 18 months is Avira. They've recently had $100million invested into the company.

Norton 360 bogged my system down.

Comodo Internet Security almost drove me insane with false positives and blocking trusted applications.

Made the switch to Kaspersky Internet Security about 4 months ago and all is well.

What do you all think of Panda? I had Avast, but suspected a problem, that Avast didn't picked up. Uninstalled it, installed Panda 2010. Panda picked up a worm and virus.

I had been using Norton in the year 2002, then switched to BitDefender because of huge memory (system resource comsumed by Norton). I was happy with BitDefender but once it failed to detect and protect from a simple virus. Then I started using ESET Smart Security and was stick to it for the last 2 years. Same thing happened, unable to protect from a known but common virus.

Then again, started Norton reading the rave reviews about its consuming less memory. Now I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010, and seems to be stick with it for long time to come. It's really a fresh and newer than the old huge-memory consuming Norton.

thanks and hope it helps.

I use:
Avira - Free
Malwarebytes - Paid

I used ComboFix (free) to find problems that nothing else could and had been on my machine for a long time, including one on my D drive.

I concur with lochsloyca.

The AVG licensed suite is great. They have really amped up their antivirus campaigns.

Free version is available but the licensed version brings a lot more to the table.

Hi

Just a quick followup on my Kaspersky problem. I decided to contact Western Europe branch here in the UK by phone, 10 pence a minute if caller is daft enough to use their
high call rate 0871 number. Spoke to a support person and she sent a 'Sqirrel Around My Laptop' piece of software and I downloaded something else which generates a logfile..Sent everything back in return email..The only reply I got from their support
told me I still had a bit of Nortons floating around on my laptop with a link to a Norton's Removal tool.. Got rid of Nortons stuff and waited for Kaspersky..

Got tired of waiting, removed Kaspersky with their tool. Installed the free version of Avast Anti Virus and Windows Essentails...Ran full scans for both, nothing detected
and my lap top is now screaming along nicely, Firefox with a minimun of six tabs running and Chrome working away as well...

Maybe Kaspersky 2010 doesn't like my version of Vista given that I have it installed on an old Dell Desktop running XP SP3..

I am considering migrating to Linux for my business computer , running a few windows specific software on my gaming rig if need be(use sandboxie )

I consider myself very savy when it comes to computer security having worked for many years in IT security (clearswift , centennial software now owned by Front Range) and now involved in Governance Risk and Compliance (Thomson Reuters)
If you thought auditors were dull, have a chat with an IT auditor some time to get some real horror stories!

It is clear from reading the above post that many of you have experienced dramatic failures in their security (learn to use a layered approach)
I myself , I am starting to give up, it's not a week that I do not come across some cross script vulnerabilities of zero day exploit where there is very little or nothing I could do if I fell prey to it.

Anyway for those who will keep using window, here is what I use

-Avast
-sandboxie
-malewarebytes
-adaware
-firewall
-ccleaner

Anyone already using Linux for their IM business?

Having found some anti virus software "clogs up the works" and slows my computer down, I use Avast and have had no problems at all.

I once had a virus beat Norton and cause havoc whilst Mcaffee was like pouring treacle into my computer!

Kaspersky is the best you are going to get. Updated on an hourly basis (compared to most that do daily) and they have the best response time out of all the companies out there. Typically under 2 hours to find new threats, most companies are 6-48 hours. In fact many hackers use Kaspersky as a test to see if their rootkit and malware packages are usable.

ESET NOD 32 is my best paid antivirus. Before ESET, I tried several others such as Norton & Avira but was never 100% protected, viruses still managed to get into my sytem. For a free version, I would also recommend AVG.

I have used AVGfree for several years now nd have never had a problem with viruses. AVG is also not a resource hog like some other antivirus programs. I have had to use Malwarebyte's software twice over the last 2 years for removing spyware which AVGfree is not so good at detecting. However, I understand that the paid version of AVG is better in this respect.

Avast. By far the best. Even the free version is outstanding (you have to reinstall every 2 months to keep it free). of all the different programs out there my experience is that avast puts the least drain on your computer resources. I could never go back to Norton, McAffe, etc.
