NOD32 all the way, very good protection, and very easy on the system resources :-)

We use the following:

Anti-Virus:

http://www.eset.co.uk/

Anti-Malware:

Malwarebytes.org

Anti-Spyware:

The home of Spybot-S&D!

Anti....Crap :-)

CCleaner - Home

Avast seems to work just fine. Only had one problem with it ever. That was when they made a mistake to their upload.

Norton is a dog... resource hog. They sell to the unknowing in my opinion.

PC World reviews Anti Virus Software about once per year, perhaps you can give them a look. I've been happy with Avast so I haven't looked in a very long time.

I also like SuperAntiSpyWare. I use it with Avast.

I second the notion that Norton is a resource hog. My subscription is about up, and I'm moving away to something else. I had Panda before Norton, and it was good, but if you let your subscription run out it pops up a reminder every 5 minutes. I didn't have my credit card with me when that happened, and that reminder interfering with my work every 5 minutes caused them to lose me as a customer.

I'd steer clear from Norton, even though I haven't used them lately, my experience with them is they tend to get into everything on your computer and use up a lot of resources. There are some good ones out there, but my personal favourites are: Ad-Aware by Lavasoft: It's an Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus and Anti-Root Kit Software. AVG Anti-Virus: Includes Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Link Scanner, Anti-Rootkit, E-mail Scanner, Web Shield and Resident Shield. Both of those work well together and are very light on system resources, I quite happy with their level of protection and prevention. These both have a free version which work well, except they lack the level of live protection, I'd definitely recommend investing in a full version of each. A third piece of software that I use for keeping my PC running smoothly is called System Mechanic. It's an all in one package for keeping your PC running in top shape, I highly recommend it. I hope these help, Cheers, Connor

I give a BIG recommendation to Avast. It's free, but it is GOOD! I have run it on every PC I have had (and many friends that I have recommended it to) and have NEVER had a problem or attack of any kind.

I have been using AVG antivirus and it works fine for my purpose. I believe there is a free version, and there is also a paid pro version with more real time updates. Other AV are like Clam antivirus, NOD32, Avast, etc.

I use the free version of AVG on all my computers.

Also, for spyware removal, a combination of super anti spyware -
Free version

Malwarebytes anti malware:
Free version

I used to use Lavasoft Ad-aware - also free, but it failed me when i needed it.
And I also used to use spybot search and destroy, but it also didn't work when I needed it.

I used mccr@ppies until it was disabled twice and a root kit installed on one computer. I was also not able to install mccr@ppies on a compaq and trying to get help from support left no resolve and it was a known issue on that particular model but Nortons installed no problem. So I am done with that product.

As stated throught the thread Nortons gets into everything though it has done real well for me.

I now use Nortons but will be looking at Avast or Kapersky when the subscription runs out.

These are the anti-virus and protection that I've been using for many years

Lavasoft Ad-Aware
AVG Anti-Virus
Spybot
Ccleaner
SuperAntiSpyware

Norton, Avast and Mcafee were very heavy on resources for windows xp.

They all are FREE some have upgrades to pro.

I was using ESET until just today when it missed a bad virus that I guess has been on my computer for a very long time.

The only thing that seems to have caught it was Avira so I will probably switch. It runs well with everything else too.

I've also tried Trend-micro and it's slow so I don't recommend it.

I use avast and it's super as a free antivirus. It even beats a couple of other paid av's out there. Check out this site for a drill through of comparisons on the top antiviruses. Oh and this is not your average comparison, they know what they're talking about and don't have referral links at all in their site, so you know that they're honest in their tests :-

AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org

or a link to their test page results :-

Like many of the above posters, I've had Norton for a number of years, but it really started bogging my computer down until I couldn't work with it because it became so slow. Also tried MacAfee, but some viruses got into that after awhile. Tried AVG but wasn't happy with it's effectiveness either.

Now we've been on ESET's Smart Security for over a year(same old computer-1.1 Gig Celeron, as well as our new laptop) and it runs fast with ESET and we've avoided any major viruses. Plus we love that it tells you that it's updated itself regularly, but we don't have to do anything! It does all the work behind the scenes and doesn't hold any of my work up. It ain't cheap, but it's the best(see Consumer Reports mag late 2009-sorry, don't remember which issue exactly, anyway it was rated #1 there..)

Eset Nod32 Antivirus is a great desktop security solution, complete with effective protection and advanced features. Antivirus from Eset Nod32 is certainly easy to install and implement. The software is easy to use and very secure. Setting up manual scans and scheduling specific scans is straightforward, or you can simply let Eset work in the background and take care of itself (and your computer) automatically.

AVG. I found Norton too slow. Also, there has been a lot of occasions when AVG has picked up viruses that Norton completely missed. Has happened the other way but is far less common.

I'd never use a "Suite" like Norton or Mcafee again. They use so much resources on my system.

I've broken to 2 sources as it is cheaper than buying a suite and I've found them less user intensive

Avast for all my anti-virus requirements
and
Counter-Spy for all my spyware protection

Wow! I thought this thread would be all talk about Microsoft Security Essentials - its brand new, completely free, and McAfee tried to stop them bringing it out due to it having potential to cost them millions.

It has also had a lot of positive reviews - finding more trojans and viruses than other programs, and running faster scans without slowing your computer down - I would definitely recommend it
