What is the simplest to use and best value membership site script?

I have been planning to do my first memberships site for quite some time now and I think I am ready to take the plunge.

Question:

What would be the simplest to use membership script out there these days?

Would it be possible to use wordpress for a membership site? How would you do this?

Any advice on the matter would be much appreciated. I am sure there are also a lot of other warriors here who would like to know where to start.
