I think my question just about squeezes in here.

Freedom2Surf have been my ISP now for years but over this past six weeks they've pi...d me off big time. Their servers are configured differently if I post a thumbnail using thump.php sometimes it appears sometimes it doesn't. Their speeds way down and well get onto the phone and you're holding for at least twenty minutes at 10p a minute, get the picture. Rant over.

Anyway I'm on the search for a new service provider. I'm only a little fish don't need much sophistication I'm just running eight small time blogs. Want a company that will act as ISP, host the blogs, supply email, and take care of the domains for me, look after all that end of the business.

Any suggestions, and why? Would be prepared to pay an extra few pound if the offer was worth it. Fibre not available in my area

I am with BT....but will be moving to O2 shortly on account of them having installed new equipment in my exchange upping the speed to around 17 Meg downloads and 1.5 to 2.5 upload.

Virgin is also coming on strong with their broadband offerings , so check if available in your area.

however, ISPreview should probably be your port of call in determining which ISP will be best for you

    Good luck

I've yet to come across an ISP who is also a great web host.

Is there a specific reason to require a single company to provide both services?

Personally I'm with ADSL24 as my ISP, and MediaTemple as my web host.

I'm based in the UK. I have BT for my landline and Demon Home Office (owned by Thus plc) as my ISP. The latter is a little expensive £22.95/m but it does have a few extra bells and whistles some of which I don't use - like the efax feature.

I, personally, would fight shy of putting all my eggs in one basket. If your ISP goes down (and they do), so does your sites/blogs hosted with them.

Use Hostgator or Bluehost for your hosting. Each of them has very attractive and inexpensive packages which your ISP may not be able to equal or rival.

I'd stay away from UK hosting companies. Because of the lack of volume of customers, they are way too expensive and their customer help desk, if available by telephone, is enough to drive you nuts. I speak from bitter experience.

Bluehost and Hostgator with both of whom I have sites have telephone customer services that are first rate.

I pay BT £4.50/m for unlimited International calls so that I can ring my hosting companies in the US anytime I have a technical problem or need their help all of which is given courteously and in great detail 24/7.

All hosting companies have the occasional blip (downtime) but nothing like as often or for as long as most ISPs.

Have to disagree on the UK hosting is too expensive, I find the availability of tech support, etc is well worth the additional few pence per month. I use Heart Internet, same guys who started and built WebFusion (before Host Europe/Pipex bought it out and turned it into a joke). Tech support is great, uptime is great, cost is low. Works for me.

I'd love to use a UK host but you can't beat Hostgator for price or great service.

Heart internet charge £10.75 plus VAT (£12.63) = $20 for their unlimited package and Hostgator charge just $9.95 for their equivalent. Hostgator has no annual contract - you can leave anytime you want without penalty.

Plus Hostgator allows unlimited addon domains. Heart makes no mention of additional domains - only subdomains. Further, Heart uses a bespoke cpanel instead of the industry standard cPanel.

'Fraid that adds up to one heck of a difference - twice the price and none of the essential features.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise you were looking at 'regular' accounts (as opposed to unlimited, Reseller type). The Heart Internet Reseller account has no limit on domains, subdomains, etc. That's what I have, and the price is excellent for the scope it gives you.

If you have more than a couple of domains, I think a Reseller account is the way to go until you're ready for a dedicated server (been there and came back after I gave up adult and didn't need ridiculous bandwidth any more, though my Reseller account has unlimited bandwidth anyway).

Oh, and the Heart control panel beats the carp out of CPanel

Fraid that proves JMSD's point about the price of UK hosting.

The unlimited package at Hostgator is $9.95 whereas at Heart it appears to be £29.95+VAT because you have to buy the reseller package if you want to host more than one domain - which is over $50!! For the same money at Hostgator you can get a level 3 VPS with cPanel.

So for just 8 blogs I would recommend the Hostgator $9.95 Baby package which, if you use the coupon code "wordpress", is just $0.01 for the first month.
