99 Designs Web Design - Share Your Experiences

Howdy,

We'll be redesigning our corporate website soon using 99Designs. As we're about to basically throw $1,200 at it, I want to be prepared.

Therefore, I was wondering you've ever had any experience with web design solutions on 99Designs and, if yes, if there's anything you reckon I should know about.

I did use 99D for logo design in the past, but it was a fairly inexpensive job ($250), so I'm wondering if there any specifics associated with more expensive, larger scale projects.

Lastly, if someone can also recommend a good coder to slice the resulting Photoshop file and turn it into a functioning CSS website, I'd be very grateful.

I like 99D because I get to pick and choose the design I like while only having to pay for the winning one. At the same time, since designers all have to compete among themselves to be the winner, there's a healthy element of competition and drive to deliver the best solution they can. Had I worked with regular design services for something like this, I'd have ended up blowing upwards of $10K, with each designer wanting compensation for their submission, regardless of whether I like it or not.

99designs and CrowdSpring are my top choice for this.
I don't think there's anything to lose with them since they bought offer Money Back Guarantee in case you didn't like any entries (note: CrowdSpring doesn't refund the listing fee, only the award price).

Generally the bigger the prize the more entires you get. $1.2k is a good price that's sure to attract good designers.

Note that it's better to have NDA if your project is high end. There's a mandatory option for this at CrowdSpring.

PS. I can help you with the coding (I run a web dev't company in PH).

At 99designs, are they completing a functional site or is it only a PSD mockup?

It's only a PSD mockup, but slicing it into CSS isn't that expensive, in my experience (I had a guy back in Russia do it for $40 - and the only reason I'm not using him this time around is because he doesn't take PayPal).

To be quite honest I personally feel crowdsourcing is the wrong way to go, especially for design work. You lack the communication and relationship you can build with by picking a freelancer yourself. And when you build that kind of relationship you also potentially find a reliable, talented designer who will take on any and all design work you need in the future.

Then you also need to consider that 99% of people on 99 designs (pun intended ) are under 16 and probaly not as reliable or as skilled as someone you find yourself.

And just a side note, PM me the brief and I can knock something up for 1k + coding

      Jtie,

Thanks for your feedback, but I have seen some astounding designs produced over at 99D. The problem with hiring a full-blown designer is that few, if any, would develop something feasible for $1k. Worse still, whatever they develop, I'd be stuck with - I doubt there any designers out there who will spend 10 days coming up with 10 different solutions, and only letting me pay for the one I like the most.

This, to me, is the main benefit of 99D - you get a ton of people working for you, but you only pay the one that does the best job of the lot.
