Anyone use the free CamStudio software?

Quick question for those who use CamStudio- what is the max record time for a screen capture that one can do with this free software? I want to buy Camtasia (after Christmas) but I need to be able to go longer than the 5 mins that Jing allows for screen captures. Ideas?

    I don't remember any time limitation with it. For sure I recorded about half hour without any issues.

      So I guess I am wondering why one would buy Camtasia if CamStudio does similar things? Or am I missing something that Camtasia does that is special?

      I would seriously look at buying Camtasia as the free version I have always found to be a bit buggy. Like Istvan says - not aware of a time restraint

    Although an investment is needed I would highly recommend Camtasia, well worth the money and a second to none bit of software.

    I have never used CamStudio but interesting to hear any reviews aswell.

    Might give it a go tomorrow.

    Obviously, Camstudio has way less features and does only the basics... You can downlaod the 30 days free trial for Camtasia and compare them for yourself.

    I use camstudio and I don't think there is a time limit. God knows, I can ramble on and on in my videos so you can record for quite some time if not forever.

    I have no idea what the benefits of camtasia would be but I have never needed more than what camstudio offers. I am just doing basic "how to" types of videos and that seems to work fine.

      same here, i've done videos over 30 minutes long. however i've noticed that when I save them to avi format they're huge.

      i do plan on investing in camtasia early 2011. but for right now camstudio's working out for me.

        I think oen of the major drawbacks is Camstudio is it is restricted to AVI format or SWF which both need to be converted to a more universal format for universal play

    I've used many screen recorders, except for camstasia, which I did not want to shell out the money for something that can be done for less.

    What I have found so far to be the best, is BB FlashBack Screen Recorder - Compare Editions

      I Use Free Camstudio, but then encode it with Handrake (also free):

      HandBrake
      • Convert your AVI file to MP4 format.
      • Chose "Web Optimized"
      • Bitrate of 32 in Audio tab.
      • "Average Bitrate" of 220 in Video tab.

      This is how you get a video to play on all internet connections and still look good.

      I used those settings on the blog at the top of my sales page here:

        I'm currently using CamStudio and there's no time limit on the program. However, I'm still not done 'tweaking' the various settings to get my videos looking as good as they can be...and this is what I hate doing!

        On the other hand, when I used Camtasia, they were great 'out of the box'!

        I myself prefer the editing interface for Camtasia vs. Camstudio but that's just MY opinion!

        If you have the time to mess w/the settings for frame rate and all that, as well as what codecs to use and you don't mind spending a good deal of time doing this...especially when 'video editing' isn't your forte, shell out the money for Camtasia and be done w/it!
